  • Man I feel like I’m back in school trying to breakdown this mans bars. It’s impossible on your first listen especially with not being familiar with his accent. But I appreciate all artists and anyone willing to step to the mic. I didn’t know he was an actual teacher!! That explains everything😂. Hey man props to Akala for killing this but this was hard for me man.

Ackee and calalou is a Jamaican vegetarian dish. He is referring to it like Popeye might do with Spinach. . . . Hence, no need to train. 😃 The UK rappers often put little references relating to their Caribbean or African heritage. Also like he says he is half a Celt and half a Maroon . . who basically were Africans who in small Caribbean communities successfully resisted enslavement.

Its worth noting that Akala (and some other UK rappers) use a lot of Carribbean slang - Ackee and Callaloo is a Jamaican dish.
The slang used by rappers here is based in Multicultural London English, a *really* complex language that's a mix of dozens of languages. There's lots of influences from African languages, Middle Eastern, South Asian languages and Carribean languages, and people's personal upbringing will determine how heavy those influences are.

Let’s put it this way. When I think of my top ten uk urban artists, I order them all, then I put Akala in his own special box on top of everyone else. He is just on another level intellectually. He gives talks at universities and big companies, two of which I have been lucky enough to go to. He raps in double time on purpose. It’s overt so you have to pay attention. Like Public Enemy used to do with the horns/sirens.
Like the saying goes “If he’s rapping to fast means your listening to slow” Take your time with it.

Never be afraid to not catch the bars. UK slang is difficult even if you live here. All of the lyrics are on a website called genius lyrics so you can look them up after each reaction and check out the slang you don't know on something like urban dictionary. www.google.com/amp/s/genius.com/amp/Akala-daily-duppy-2020-lyrics
It great that you're trying. It will get easier.

This was my introduction to the UK when I started the channel. I never even heard a UK accent before this. Well, I think I did one song from Dave and was struggling. I’ll have to revisit these now that I’m familiar with terminology and I can hear through accents better

No offense to anyone else but the British school system is very good about worldwide knowledge. You find that a lot with UK artists they speak a lot more on worldwide issues, American artists mostly speak about how much money they have or hood stuff which everyone can understand. Just my opinion.

  • @LastTryMedia

Dude, fuck those hatin' on you. US hip hop is obviously more prevalent in the UK than UK hip hop is in the US, so obviously we have an easier time understanding you. Plus there are more varied accents in the UK, so one second you think you got it then the next you get someone from fucking Bristol on the mic or something and you're thrown off. It's still an entertaining reaction regardless, so don't let these fools get to you. Keep up the god work dude :D

Your issue is you are familiar with American English which is a lot slower than British English. I seriously would suggest watching a few British TV shows to get used to the speed. The slang will come with time. Great reaction

Akala is Professor and teaches at various schools. He has 2 doctorates. He literally has people studying his writings around the world. Also you need to try and learn the difference between hiphop and grime as you will struggle with some UK artists as they don't rap in the same pockets as hiphop. If you can get used to it then you won't believe the levels to a Grime MC. I'm not saying Akala is grime but this definitely over 140 bpm

      @@CliffBeatsOfficial I got you my guy :)
These are a range of different UK styles some have heavy Jamaican patois which is something your ear will get used to, along with jungle, afrobeats influences . Some will fave cultural and social references, others political. It's a good assortment . The further you go into UK rap/ grime/ hip hop ( and drill if you chose to) the easier it will become as you pick up knowledge and get used to the different accents. Most of these artist are from the London region, but Lady Leshur ,for example, is from Birmingham so has a distinctively different accent.
Anyway, if you get stuck....you can always ask :)
