Why your toddler NEEDS a balance bike, NOT a tricycle, to become a biking PRO

  • Here's why you should get your toddler a balance bike INSTEAD of a tricycle.
Balance bikes are all the rage - and for good reason: toddlers who start off on a balance bike (which has no pedals or training wheels) have a much easier time transitioning to a pedal bike. Meanwhile, toddlers who start off on a tricycle usually take longer to learn how to use a regular bike.
My toddler received his first balance bike when he was around 21 months old. Within a few days, he was practicing at a pump track / bike park and he's been a pro ever since! This is the story of his journey.
We have a Cruzee balance bike that we got used from Facebook Marketplace, but other popular brands include Strider and Woom. There's lots of great options though. The important thing is that the balance bike you choose is lightweight. I feel like the earlier your toddler starts, the less fear they have and the sooner they will master the skill of using their balance bike. Friends of mine who started their 3-year-olds on balance bikes had a harder time with it because their toddlers had more fear. My little dude was just racing down hills without any fear - probably because he doesn't know what could happen if he were to fall/crash. That's also why it's important to stay close to prevent any accidents.
