On June 4th, the sixth installment of my 12 songs in 12 months project enters the world. Created in the tradition of the beloved European “Summer Hit” the upbeat, uplifting pop music serves as a mask that hides the dark and sinister tone bubbling underneath. It is a squeaky clean ode to misery, that honestly depicts my lifelong battle with depression.
For this single, I’ve again enlisted the guitar talents of Sebastian Svalland (ex-LINDEMANN, PAIN & Letters from the Colony), and teamed up with Jeremy Dawson (Shiny Toy Guns, MXMS) to create a special rendition of the title track. The “Sad Face” version musically reflects the dour emotional tone of the lyrics. It is not a remix, it is a complete reimagining of the song from the ground up.

I'm gonna be completely honest, this version made me cry on the first listen. I was completely blown away by this. Raw emotion at it's purest. The thunder works so well in this context. 👏👏👏

As I said on the other version of this song, it feels like a spiritual successor to "Mad World." It feels so much darker slowed down, just as they did in the Donnie Darko movie.

In the context of the song, the build-up at the end, fading to silence, is very... meaningful.
Fuck this hits hard. I already loved the original version and the way it takes dark lyrics and sugarcoats them in a manic, happy, energetic sound to match the lyrics of putting on a fake happyface, but this version just fucking rips away the illusion and makes it impossible to ignore the miserable, desperate lyrics.

Like Party Monster, there's that tinge of sadness that haunts the song entirely. Whereas the previous song was about survival in desperation, Happy Face...to me...is more about disguising sadness that's inherit within you.

Love this version. It'll take a few listens of each consecutively for me to decide which one I prefer. Most likely the choice would just be made by the mood I'm in at the time.

Daniel, you've done it again. The music you've made has always hit me in ways that other artists never were able to. I've listened to everything you've done throughout your career and it's been exciting watching your style change throughout. You've managed to keep a fresh sound that doesn't alienate your fan base and still keeps me interested in seeing what comes next. In a world of cookie cutter pop "hits", it's nice to see there's still artists out there with a unique sound out there.
I like the duality of this track as there's the "happy version", the facade we put out, but also the sad face version which is our true selves that are underneath the mask that never ends up on our social media or to others.
Again, this is great and really hits home. Thank you for this and I can't wait to hear more from you.

Daniel -- What can I say? Both versions are true "Works of Art". The "Sad Face" version is especially timely, right now in particular and it addresses what so many of us are going through. People around the globe are slowly trying to gain their bearings once again, after essentially barricading themselves indoors for quarantine measures. Music, as you're well aware of becomes a historical marker in perspective and these two songs mirror each other, which identify a clear social barometer indicating the meridian of the state within a "social imaginary". Twenty-five years from now, history will recollect June 2021 which, I truly believe it will chronicle Aesthetic Perfection and say, "This is what people felt; but, we got through it together". Music is dynamically universal enough for others to penetrate, momentarily peering into any past age with real emotion, touching it momentarily with the past, present, and definitely in the future.
I think others will believe I'm getting way to "heavy" right now; but, I never say anything I don't sincerely emote. Serendipity has its moments, especially when we don't expect certain revelations to sometimes happen and it always occurs without any warning. I don't believe people can wear a "happy face" completely, right now. When you started the "12 X 12 Project" -- I've learned enough throughout my years to completely trust my instincts. It’s all here with an ability to recognize these moments "in" such, sensitive dystopian events, which potentially could change the trajectory of an artist’s career. I've been watching your growth from the beginning and you have introspectively grown by leaps and bounds, apart from that skinny kid who voraciously screamed his frustration and angst to the world.

As a song performed in two distinct, double-edged styles, I love the concept. Lots going on tonally and thematically beneath the surface.
Personally I felt there was something particularly cinematic about this version. It drips with emotion and I could honestly see it used as trailer music. Off the top of my head, footage from JP's Joker would be an interesting experiment ... all the pain hiding behind the smile. I'm sure there are plenty of others that would work too.
