There are some artists who get immortalised by the way they render some ragas. But there are some ragas which get immortalised because they are rendered by some artists. Nikhilji and Bhairav is one such phenomenon. 🙏
My perception about Nikhilda is that, even in concert, he used to start playing for the audience but immediately shifted to play for himself and his God and when he used to finish he was in a different world. That touch, that total self-absorbed dedication of raga was present in no other instrumentalist and in vocal, only the great Abdul Karim Khan.
Forget not Kishori Amonkar. She also reached the same state when she performed. And when that state is achieved by any artist, by any human being, where their present moment becomes complete dedication, they emit Eternity in its most perfect form.
That is the best for everyone. Playing for the pleasure of the Supreme, who gives the ability, and Nikhilda plays in this gratitude and Bhakti the essence of all yoga and Rasa. Everyone becomes satisfied and experiences the ananda yoga bliss.
This is helping me move through a grieving process and simultaneously opening my entire self up to the divinity in absolutely everything, thank you 🙏🏼✨✨✨✨
I think. Berkeley California circa 1974 St John's Church. Zakir Hussain tabla. (If it was 1976 of after it would have been Andindo Chaterjee who Nikhilda introduced to US) I WAS THERE! A student made a cassette recording from her seat. I used to have it.
The first recording I had of this ten years ago was labelled “Private Concert” mid70s Pranesh Khan??? Another version from another source said "California July 17 1976" This version of poorer quality was distributed in 2006 by "sitarmac" under the name Bairagi Bhairav
Ahhh! Yes I remember now...sounds more like Pranesh than Gyan Babu! ho ho. Do you play? Pls check oput my sitar videos @ antarblue and my FB antar richard garneau :)))
Very few recording of panditji is available. I have also heard people say, that most of panditji's recording were done in Germany (live) and it exists only in that country. Thanks for uploading this one.
In creating a new raga, not only choice made for the swaras used to make a rga. But an effort made for its chalan, and an approach to the swaras. Afterall many a trditional major ragas have same swaras but different approach to these basic aroha and avaroha., e.g. puriya, Marwa and Sohini. Bairagi composition was presented by Ravi shankar , so he is creater of this raga. Fact that same notes and a raga Rewati existed makes no difference, after all Swaras like numbers are eternal. As for me, I enjoy the music, why get into who did what!!? malroh.
Yes, this is definitely Raga Bhairav. The Maihar approach to Raga Bhairav avoids the use of komal ni as a grace note of komal dha, a common occurrence in the treatment of the raga by musicians of other gharanas, especially in Khyal renditions of the raga. As for Raga Bairagi Bhairav, what I understand is that Raga Bairagi (SA komal Re Ma Pa komal Ni) was created by Pandit Ravi Shankar. Subsequently, other musicians started calling it Bairagi Bhairav to imply it was a preexisting raga.
Fascinating how different gharanas treat the approach to a Raag and how they relate to the Carnatic versions (in many cases Carnatic approach were the originals (?) as in Charukeshi which I have read could be considered of Bhaiav Thaat) Didn't know the aspect of the komal ni embellishment which if labored on unskilled could turn into Basant Mukari . On Pt Ravi Shankar's liner note to his Bairagi, he does claim to have invented it. Thank You Stephen...deepest respect to your writings and efforts..
Stephen Slawek Raag Bairaagi exists as a raaga long before Panditji "created" it. It is called "REVATI" in the 72 melakartas classification. Panditji may have given it a new name and layed it in the hindustani style.
burman smith The ten that classicification is unfortunately a over simplification adopted by the North. It is most unsatisfactory. It also gives opportunity for endless debates on where do certain raagas fit in. As a Hindustani musician I donot subscribe to it. The 72 Melakartha system is far more complete. If adopted seriously, then many claims of "Creating" new raagas will fall to the ground. Why cannot we just say that we have re-discovered them and brought them to the North indian tradition?
Bairagi as a raag existed centuries before Panditji "created" it. Its original name in Carnatic music is REWATI. Perhaps Pandit ji renamed it but certainly not created it. By Panditji i refer to Pandit ravi Shankar
So far as my knowledge is concerned and the "taalim" that I have received this is not Bairagi Bhairav at all! This is raga Bhairav. Please change the title.

Fully agree!!! He was transported to a diff world while playing!

Revati is not a melakarta ragam - it is a janna raagam.
this is Bhairav one of the main that raag. End of argument.

True. It was Ustad Allauddin Khan who named it thus.
,
This sounds like "Bhairav". Bairagi is an audav raga with komal ni which omits dha and gha.

I have not come across Biplab Sanaddar name since 1968...where did you go to school?..I had a dear friend of the same name.....late 60s. LOL
Probably it's a different Biplab Samadder :-) I went to school in Kolkata and passed my secondary exams in the early 90's.
