Thank you so much. I struggled forever trying to make soil blockers out of PVC and dowel and stuff. They were unhandy and never worked well enough to be worth the trouble. I just went out with your simple 3oz method and made a dozen in five minutes. They were perfect and easy. Simple, fast, effective. The perfect size too. No need to up pot later. I put this right up there with learning that a mustard green cover crop tilled into the garden kills root knot nematodes.

    Awesome! Thanks!
For my easy reference, I'm including here your seed starting soil mix recipe:
    1:56 "5 quarts of peat,
    4 teaspoons of lime,
4 quarts of coarse sand or perlite,
1/2 cup of a complete fertilizer,
    2 quarts of soil and
4 quarts of compost, well composted compost"

A piece of plastic sheet for cover will keep the soil from drying out.

I love the idea of not buying those expensive soil block makers--for home gardeners, spending well over $100 seems prohibitive. Like you, I've thought about making my own with household items. However, when watching videos using soil block mixtures, it seems as if seeds would rot in such a soupy mixture before they could germinate. Do you let the soil blocks dry out a bit before planting? I'm curious to know how this worked for you and if you have any advice or comments. Thanks!

No. I make them and put the seed in. I hope that helps!
