The necessity for creativity due to limited hardware is something I really miss about gaming. You’d think that less technological restrictions would breed more creativity, but I think that more often than not the opposite is true

    • @EMLtheViewer

If you are not already familiar with them, you may be interested in PICO-8 and Playdate.
The former is a fantasy console you can use on any computer platform including browser, designed to give hard limitations to encourage creativity with the design of games, apps, etc.
The latter is an actual modern games platform influenced by old Game & Watch and Game Boy handhelds, also designed with limitations but enforced by hardware rather than software.
Both of them have growing libraries of remarkable apps and games really worth checking out. They are both born of the desire to work within limitations that require creative solutions, and for that reason they have been attracting some developers.

The only things that restrain the New 3DS version of Xenoblade are the low display resolution and the fact that the New 3DS has to basically do double the work to compute the 2 sceneries/images for the stereoscopic 3D effect.

What I love is seeing all the absolutely insane shit Pokémon fans will do with the hardware. Seriously, Pokemon Emerald Rogue. Pokemon Unbound. How the hell… Would love to see you check those out and talk about them on this channel. Really scratches the Pokémon itch the modern games haven’t been scratching.

What we have here is the total opposite to dumping a badly optimized Unreal Engine game on a console! I want to see more of this bare metal programming approach because it's always super impressive. It reminds me of the old demo scene where they did almost impossible things on very limited hardware. As of today (besides Nintendo) the developers over at Shin'en Multimedia are one of the few in the business that still got that type of talent. And the exceptional bedroom coders of course!

I know about the subject, to clarify the Nintendo engineers at that time did know very well that you could run 3D on the GBA. They programmed everything in Assembly Language Low Level Code, in order to optimize their games so they would run stably with the CPU and the little memory ram it had. At that time it was more difficult to program than now. Most of them had to create custom engines from scratch so that the game would run well for the GBA architecture. Yes it is possible to run Mario 64 on the GBA but the lag, field of view and the pixels of the screen do not really let you appreciate the graphics well, plus I believe that the GBA does not have Z-Buffer and for that reason there are polygons that look mixed. Nintendo knew very well that Golden Sun for example those games look better in 2D pixels, but for the DS it already had better 3D performance and that is why more games were created.

  • @GalaxyFur

I'm not surprised it runs on the GBA. The GBA is basically a refined Super NES without Mode 7, though. But while it lacks the Mode 7 tech and has slightly worse audio capabilities, it does make up for some of that by having more RAM and a faster CPU than the SNES. The GBA Arm chip outputs 3D environments through software rendering. Some 3D development tech used in N64 games was first tested on the SNES. So, since the GBA has a CPU that lends itself to basic 3D, mimicking Mode 7 and the Super FX chip, I'm not surprised. Even if the GBA is limited to a maximum resolution of 240 x 160p. (3:2)

I'd think the DS version should be at least somewhat compatible with the GBA, but that has so many touch features and I think a later, faster ARM processor, so that starting from scratch is probably easier.
I'd probably be inclined to redesign much of it to bring it better in line with the GBAs capabilies, since at the very least it doesn't have any analogue controls. Using scaled sprites for Mario and some enemies would probably look better, too
