    I have watched both of you since the very start of your journey, and I can tell the mental toll this process has taken on you. It pains me to hear that it is hard to find the joy at this point, and that you are looking forward to the Big Breakthrough... simply because the progress you have made is absolutely stunning to date, and the joy is still all around you to be had. Try to step back for a few minutes each day and recognize how fantastically successful you have been to date, and what an impressive force you are together. You ARE doing what you have DREAMED. Not many of us can say that. Will keep watching until the last piece of furniture is in, and will look forward to your endeavors thereafter. All the best! Pulling for your continued success all the way from Atlanta!!

    I know it's too late, but CHALK LINES! One horizontal to set the top edge of the cleat at the eave (no messing around with string lines that can be moved around), and one vertical at the inside edge of where the first panel goes. Measure when you don't have a panel to contend with.
    I'm curious what kind of ice breakers they plan to use. You can't have a roof like this without some kind of ice restraint/breaker down at the eaves, otherwise a falling sheet of ice can kill someone.

    The best part about building your own home, is that you know where every nut bolt and screw are located. You have also made all the critical decisions on your own nobody told you exactly how to build your home. so own it, I'm proud of you, this comes from that very old man who's built many homes congratulations keep up the great work.

  • @thepizza123
    @thepizza123 Před 5 lety +7

    Hehe, you put the edge piece up crooked, knew it was crooked, tried to correct but couldn't, accepted that it would remain crooked . . . . . and then squared the roofing to it. Hehe. Speaking as someone who has installed a metal roof, you'd think they lock together, but there is definitely movement that you can get, maybe a 1/16th each panel, but you can easily correct for any initial squaring errors (or lose square a little bit each panel).
    I am mainly just giving you a joking hard time. You guys are definitely being more precise and building a higher quality house than all of the builders that you might hire. I think you're doing a great job. And, as an owner builder myself, I can say that you'll get crap from everyone the entire time. Just keep on keeping on, you're doing great.

    For cutting the metal, you are using red handled snips only. Try green handled snips as well, the handle color means that one cuts "right", and one cuts "left". Might make your life a little easier, every little bit helps!

    You all consistently get it finished and done right. Looks great in the end and it seems rock solid. The start of each new part of the process might be ugly and stressful but you two analyze, learn and figure it out as a team. It’s your time, your house, your investment. Who cares what the critics might say as you progress. Your gaining more than a home debt free. Your gaining experience as well that will translate into so much more in the future. Keep it positive and keep doing epic things together.

    Don't think of it as two days of problems. In reality, it was two days of education to do a job that most installers would spend a few months before they get good at it. A few years later they are experts.
    You've done great. You've done it in very little time, and your results will be great. All the critics are spewing theory at you, and you're out there where the bullets are real. That makes you the winner in this equation.

    you need left and right hand sheers. you have to switch back and fourth between the two depending on witch side you are cutting on. so when you are cutting the end of the sheet to fold over you can get right up close to the rib with out much trouble.

    I totally understand the stress factor you are under. We too have taken on a major construction project, going on 2 years now. We are on. Steep slope with a river at the bottom. My husband and I are doing all the work. Supply stores are 30 miles away. And we have 2 kiddos, one with health issues that require me to drive her 6 hours one way once every few weeks to see a specialist. And we work full time. We just finished putting our second metal roof on this year, on the second outbuilding we built this year. Not to mention I painted the 2800 sq ft house and the existing 2 stall garage. I totally understand how frustrating living under construction is! I respect the fact that you both are still finding ways to connect with each other. Keep up the great work! You are both troopers! And Anna, what a blessing! 👍🏻

    What you're describing for the outside sounds kinda industrial looking....except for the basement. I figured with the timber frame build you'd shoot for "quaint and organic". I understand you want it to be low maintenance and functional but it seems like your heading towards something Neo Metallic. This was unexpected.

  • @Zasaramel
    @Zasaramel Před 5 lety +53

    It seems to me they chose the hardest possible situation/materials for every stage of their build which is quite impressive and sad at the same time. Firstly they chose to build their home into a hill without easy access to every wall with large equipment, chose to use SIPs which require an assload of extra work to get them ready for installation, chose a crazy roof pitch which makes working on it a nightmare, and now wanting to install a specific style of metal roofing that is unconventional. Oh and btw, doing the vast majority of it by themselves with minimal experience in most aspects of the build.
    I commend the fortitude to not just willingly take on such a project but having stood strong all this time in toughing it out without throwing in the towel and contracting most of these projects out so you could save some sanity.

    Ive watched every single video you two yahoos have put on the tube. I dont think I've ever commented before. But this time...you said something at the end that resonated and that was, "having the pride to say we did that...".
    That is what it's all about isn't it? Self pride can be one of the least talked about but most sought after trait we as people need. Not to prove our worth but to maintain self-confidence (which is what allows us to walk through life unafraid and or lost- imho). So, thanks for the reminder...I needed that.

    I never reply and with 600 plus comments it may not be seen but.... The dynamics of CZcams going along for the ride puts a different twist on this. So many negative comments. So many try this try that. That alone mentally would create brain fog. I find it interesting that the people who say “I’m done watching them screw this up” are here on the next video to criticize once again. Props to you guys for dealing with that alone. You guys have beaten every obstacle that has been placed before you. It’s human nature to think the next one lurking around the corner will beat you. But it hasn’t. Long time ago in a land far away this is how people did things. They had to. A lot of those houses are still standing today. You guys have chosen to do it yourself and there are some lazy individuals out there that for lack of better words are jealous enough to tempt you to give up. Very similar to how people congratulate you on your new car “debt” you talked about in a way early video. Things like building your contraption to get the panels on the roof is a dying art. “Just get a crane.” Don’t worry about using your brain to try to figure something out. All part of the life skills that are being lost. One of my “favorite questions asked you in the comments “Why grow your own vegetables when you can go to the store and buy them.” If an answer is needed.....Because I freaking want to should be a good enough answer. I digress. I could fill this page up talking about the lazy people who make up society now days and want all of us to come join them because misery loves company. Keep on keeping on. You have no choice but to finish, if you don’t give up.

Your roofing like left handers, right handed roofers will lay the sheeting right to left,so you can use your dominant hand to do the drilling & screwing. you both will be far less fatigued. 45 degrees is hard enough in its own right. Hey guys.. Love the contraption for getting the sheets up to position... great bit of farm ingenuity!!! I have been watching since the footings and slab went in for the garage and really enjoy seeing the new videos every day or two... Things are done VERY differently in your state / country / world :) and having been in the building game as an electrician for 35 plus years here in Australia can't wait to see the electrical rough-in and fitt-off. My cat Simon loves watching the show with us and could be a very close relative of Bugaboo as they both carry on like they were related... it's uncanny. Anyhow keep up the good work... you are inspiring the way bring us all along for the ride... the ups and the downs... take it easy and enjoy the process it will be fantastic in the end.... Phil

    Thank you for sharing your journey. You will do it!
    While your videos convey better than all TV programs about the scope of building a home. Your videos are still a snippet of the work you are doing to build this house. I applaud you for all your blood, sweat, and tears you are investing in your future. The ability to undertake tasks that are firsts and all the challenges this causes would have caused many to fail. Stay strong, and persevere.

    Everyone wants a roof over their head. So what's wrong with being "in over your head?"

    2 extra strong magnets, two rags to use as a way to pull up the roof panels. Could also weight the other side of rope/string/paracord that is attached to the magnets. Just a thought.... keep up the great work, and you could also skip stages of build when the wash repeat repetition. This may help in being more focused on the house, and the audience will understand. Stay hydrated and safe guys.
