      It didn't work with Corbyn in 2019. The most logical thing to do is to move back to the centre-left. That's how you get the majority of public support. If you're in opposition, you get nothing done and more tory chaos.

If that is his politics wouldn't it make more sense for him to move to the Torys?     I've seen other observers come up with the following to soften this over;
    - She is standing down, so ultimately she wont be a Labour MP for very long. (Come on Sunak, call it already, it wont get any better the longer you wait)
    - She is only getting a seat in a place where her views have always been more aligned with Labour than the Tories. So whatever other views she has will not be Labour policy.
    - This is a strategic move. They could have told her to bugger off and become an independent, or double the MP's Reform has, which either means nothing or makes things even worse. But they've held their noses and welcomed her onboard in an effort to showcase a future Labour government is for (almost) everyone, not just the left. And with her in particular, they can basically say the Tories are actually more UKIP than the Conservative party from not that many years ago.
    With that said, they shouldn't accept another like her, they've made their point with this, no need for a repeat.

Who had Trump for years talking about how terrible Mexican immigration is, as his businesses are jammed to the gills with Mexican migrants working for peanuts under the threat of deportation if they complain. • @segue2ant395
      @segue2ant395 Před měsícem

      The existence of the small boats is a bad thing - people die on them. But the Tory government created the 'boat crisis' themselves, deliberately, under the advisement of the same people who advised the Australian government to do the same in 2013. When the Aussie govt. did it, it was explicitly because they knew they'd lose the next election without a major issue - so they created an issue by closing legal routes, then refused to solve it, claiming it wasn't possible until after the election. Once the election was over, after campaigning with the slogan 'Stop The Boats', they suspended various sections of human rights protections and began expensive naval operations to 'turn back' the boats.
      They also... ummm... reopened a load of migration centers, to allow people to migrate legally again. But shhh... boats bad! Smugglers bad! And most importantly, foreigners, bad!
      Talking about the boats in a moral context, disassociated from the actions of the government, means you're supporting the Tories' narrative - whether you intend to or not.

Elphicke isn’t contesting Dover at the next GE, she won’t be in for long so even though she is awful, if she sticks to that promise and more pressure is put on Sunak to call a GE that’s fine with me. I don’t agree with your analysis. There is is no disagreement from me that Elphicke has expressed views that are horrendous and should not fit with a Labour Party moving forward. However she is not standing at the next election, and her experience on housing is useful. She will have no impact on other policy whatsoever. Added to the pressure that her defection causes Conservatives on balance it’s a good move as long as it doesn’t cause a backlash and loads of people then are turned off Labour for reasons that don’t stack up.
    I agree that it seems ridiculous that Jamie Driscoll is not included in this Labour Party. However I don’t agree with your claims about how Elphicke’s inclusion is likely to impact the Party’s values.
