One time I came up to a school zone in front of Hasson Elementary. I slowed down. The "school Van" behind me did not. She was doing at least 40 in a 15mph school zone. State cop was sitting there and to his credit he did pull her over.
The chief is using this dangerous situation like a bait car to catch potential criminals. The fact that the public is in danger seems acceptable to the chief if it enables him to write more tickets.
So they don't want to prevent crime. They would rather react to crime after it is committed. So I guess I should leave my front door to my house open when I am gone, so I can find out how many burglars are in the area.
What the chief was saying was, "We don't want to prevent people from breaking laws - we want to catch them breaking laws, no matter who gets hurt in the process!"

Unfortunately THAT police chief is the MAJORITY. Thanks for spreading awareness of something a lot of us have known for decades. Tickets are NOT deterrents...it's road piracy nothing more. I've always said if the penalties paid for traffic violations went to local charities...instead of the departments and cities....traffic tickets would cease to exist....police wouldn't even bother enforcing traffic laws.

I live in a rural county in middle Tennessee. During school hours when the lights are for the school zones you will an elected official in the middle of the highway with his lights on. He is standing out there directing traffic coming and going out of the high school. He is expediting the movement of cars and the schools buses. His lights are and another deputy is at the other entrance. He is Sheriff and this is what he does during the school year. I have yet to respond to the school zone due a fender bender while they are there with lights on and reflective vest to make their presence know. It’s sad that a chief would want to do a study as to the risk, benefit, and analysis of saving a child’s life. Like you said James Madison, it is just the flip of a switch, that is not hard. My heart goes out to the family that lost their child because someone could not flip a switch.

This is a direct result of switching from the original model of policing from 'crime prevention' to 'law enforcement'. And as long as local governments keep following that policy, nothing will change.
