Having been a Defender owner and user of many extreme adventures, baboons pass, Moremi Botswana, Transkei wild coast extreme off road routes we have moved on to a VW transporter van. My van is a 2x4 with larger more off road capable tyres fitted. My question is, would it be fine to travel the Mossel bay to Witsand trip that you did? I have found it fairly OK in sand as I have a lot of experience in sand driving. Lower the tyre pressure to 0.8 bar and with the engine over the drive wheels my van is pleasantly surprising.

Rob, I think it should be no problem. It is either tarred or gravel roads, with sand an option in places. Enjoy!
