Meati has recently arrived in my local Sprouts Market and I've only tried the steak one. It tastes like what I remember a roast used to taste like. Its got that slow cooked beef roast texture that I remember as a kid. The flavor was NOT "mushroomy" at all!
bingo!
Just had the Meati carne asada today. The best vegan steak we've had or been able to make ourselves.
awesome!
made some tacos out of it and was delicious! 😍
When I saw the topic I knew we were in trouble!! And I knew what you meant Sis! Lol! You both have made going Vegan so easy! It's been 3 months so far and it has not been difficult at all! Thanks!!
Love, Love your recipes as well
thanks so much! So happy to hear that for you!
Keep going girl!! 👏 I’ve been vegan over 3 years now and it was the best decision I’ve ever made ❤️🐔🐮🐷
You 2 must have so much fun together! I love watching your videos. Thanks for all you do
We really do, thank you!
Glad y’all did this because I was waiting for y’all to try this! I trust y’all!
Thank you!
Thanks guys for reviewing these, I was anticipating on buying these.
hope you try
I’ve actually been wanting to try them, cause I love oyster and lions mane mushrooms. Now I need to run out and get some to try! Thanks guys!
I'm so happy you guys are trying these. My family is addicted to all of them🤤
yay!
Tabitha Brown did a video on the carne asada ones, that's how I first heard about this brand. She doctored them up with her own seasonings and then stomped her foot when she was eating them, she couldn't stop saying how good it was .. Wish I had a sprouts in my area. Loved watching you guys taste test them all
Whole Foods is getting them too! Check there if you have that
Also in whole foods and Meijer. Going into other stores soon
I am obsessed with these things. I love the clean ingredients. That is HUGE for me. I also love the texture, flavors and versatility. I also love the low calories, low fat, high fiber, high protein and vitamins and nutrients. I don't get the fish sandwich vibe but I do love cooking the crispy cutlets, letting them cool, and sneaking them into restaurants to add to salads. Restaurants near me never have good protein options for plant-based eaters!
Thanks for your review. I’m going to try them if I can find them.
Enjoy!
I found the 🍄 video!
Thanks for the chuckle 😃
I haven't been daring enough to try any "vegan steak" products yet. But as someone who really enjoys mushrooms, unlike someone else we know, I'm looking forward to finding this and trying it!
Thank you. Good review.
Thanks for watching!
I was so impressed with these (flavor, texture, limited ingredients). Had classic steak with V horseradish sour cream and just bought carne asada to try. Thanks for reviewing.
Thanks for another helpful taste test. Really appreciate the top-down shot of each item. Can you share the sodium content per serving?
Thanks for doing this video. I just picked up the stake and chicken flavored product. I will cook them soon.
Hope you enjoy
Well, my husband & I just tried the Meati "steaks". I like a lot of foods other people don't like, but if I don't like something, it's usually because of the texture. This was one of those foods. I was able to get it down because I had a pile of mashed potatoes on my plate and that somewhat helped disguise the texture. I probably won't be buying it again, unless something changes.
Tabitha Brown was the reason I tried the carne asada and I'm so glad I did cause its delicious! Been leery of trying the other 2 and ya'll are really throwing me off with the chicken tasting like fish😅! Maybe I'll try them one day. As always thanks for the honest review. Glad Andrew survived lol
HAHAHAH
6:48 I got what you meant/were trying to convey. Cheers for the video you both
thanks!
I missed these review videos!
More to come!
That was great! I’ll be going to Sprouts tomorrow and hopefully they have it! I’m curious what mushroom is in the ingredients. By the way, I tried one of the new Gardein bowls for lunch today and it was yummy! Love you peeps ❤
glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the review. I'd be willing to try if they show up in my area. I'm terrible in liking breaded chick'in products.
Thank you for the review. I don’t like mushrooms either, so this was reassuring.
welcome!
The first time I tried the carne asada I freaked out because to me, it was so realistic 😂😂
LOL
These look so good. Larisha, your hair is amazing.
awww thank you!
Andrew's facial expressions are everything🤣🤣🤣
IKR
His expressions are so honest lol
😂😂😂😂 Forreal
This fellow mushroom hater watched this with video with great interest. If I see this in the store, I'll definitely try them.
I REALLY wish there was a Sprouts near me (Southern New England). It really seems like their vegan offerings are better than anywhere else!
Hope you get a store soon!
You are right about the carne asada steak--it has the same taste and texture as chuck roast that's been sitting in a crock pot for 10 hours. Exactly like that.
I've been wanting to try this vegan brand. Thanks for the review.
Hope you like it!
Thanks, me too. I've had a hard time finding it in the grocery store.
I tried the steak but not the chicken ones yet. The steak one though, this is what I had to do to get it to a tougher steak like texture state. I found I needed to sear it in a fry pan first. Then I added it to my air fryer but had to play with the time and temp (wishing I wrote this down) in order to make the steak not so mushy . It worked though! It just needs to be dried out alittle bit to get more of that solid steak like texture :)
Glad you found a way to enjoy it
Good to know. I just tried the classic steak only in the air fryer, and it was awful. I'll sear it first. I'm thinking I might need to marinate it or something. Gotta figure out what to do with the second one that I already cooked.
Perilous! But fun! Partly because another vegan analogue shoots for chicken and ends up being Filet-O-Fish! (why does this happen?) So pleased that Andrew survived, and that he has a different perspective. I love mushrooms, and would _not_ buy these if seeking mushroom vibes, which is good to know. Thanks for posting : )
I totally understand what you were saying about the texture of overcooked cheap cut of meat. And pretty amazing that Andrew agreed to try these. Maybe he will be open to experimenting with different mushrooms???
you're pushing it LOL!
@@MakeItDairyFree 🤣🤣🤣
I've tried all 3 and love them. I've made steak and eggs, steak and scalloped potatoes. I've made pesto orzo chicken with the classic and I've made delicious chicken sandwiches with the crispy. 😋😋😋
Andrew- I made a cheesesteak using Unreal Deli Steak slices. It was amazing!
oh haven't seen those
I will be looking for them
We had that today and it was great!! 🥰😋😋😋💯💯💢💚💙🩵
nice!
I've had all three and they are delicious! Found these at Meijer's.
Good to know!
I’ve tried all of them and they are so good ❤
YAY!
I 100% agree that the breaded one tastes like a crispy fish patty.... Like it really wants some tartar sauce. I haven't tried the plain one but I'm glad to know that doesn't also taste fishy just for the sake of variety
so glad not alone LOL
these are great i like them all, kind of pricey though, upvoted!!
I feel like everything is pricey anymore LOL
We tried the crispy ones and really liked them. I think what gives away that they're mushroom is a slightly bouncy (?) texture. But we'll get them again. I think we found them at Meijer.
nice!
6:48 I got you while you were saying😉👌🏾
Thanks!
Thanks for your help. I’m trying to go vegan and I need all the product reviews so I’m not wasting money on things that just aren’t that good. You’re very helpful.
I have only had the regular steak so far and have the carne asada in the freezer. Meati just announced they’re coming to Whole Foods in an email I got today. Sprouts is a fairly large chain with locations in many states so, with any luck everyone will have access soon! It’s delicious!!
yay!
I literally just tried to the crispy cutlet with marinara sauce and it was really good
Beyond meat has a steak now. I’m gonna try it this weekend to make cheesesteak. I used it in chili and it was awesome.
I think I understand the texture you are describing. That chewier texture of a roast or chuck steak that got cooked to medium well instead of medium, or of a roast that wasn’t seared before putting in a crockpot, with not quite enough moisture to cover it all.
You aren’t gnawing on it but it’s no tenderloin.
@thenarddogcooks facial expressions of disgust to enlightenment and curiosity are everything. I see a bunch of fish taco recipes coming soon
hahahah!
I just tried the classic cutlet for the first time and even though I had previously read the package I had to google and double check that I was not eating actual chicken. And healthy to boot ❤
lol
I’ve tried the steak and it was almost too chewy for me, but it had good flavor. I have the classic chicken in the freezer but haven’t tried it or the breaded one yet.
i get that
She sees invisible floaty fuzzy things?
What kind of mushrooms are those?!?! lol
Just kidding! I loved the video and your channel.
Happy subscriber here.
I tried the Crispy Cutlets (like chicken) just now and they were quite good. The texture is a a little different than chicken but not in a bad way. I used to enjoy a beef or chicken burger with grilled onions. These completely satisfy any craving for meat. Best so far in the vegan meat category.
👍🏼 the crispy chik cutlets and carde asada steak.
I love mushrooms, so I was excited to try these. I tried the crispy chicken and liked the first few bites, but it started tasting weird. The texture started really throwing me off. Then I felt like I was eating on tissue paper. I won't be repurchasing it.
oh man
I 110% love the quality of Meati. It’s delicious and clean tasting. At least to me.
Awesome!
😂😂😂 Andrew's faces though! 😂😂😂
ALWAYS!
6:49 i got you, girl!😂 Totally got it.
LOL thanks
I tried the Meati classic steak this week.
When I bought it, I was hoping for a vegan analog of a nice broiled rib steak.
After learning of other people's experiences, I did not know what to expect. It is crazy how others' opinions run the gamut from disgusting to best ever.
I seasoned it and followed all the directions and tips from the manufacturer.
As to being like meat, it surprised me and was more like meat than I imagined it would be. However, it was not at all like the broiled steak I had hoped for.
It was too moist and spongy and not necessarily beef. If I had been in a foreign country where I did not speak the language nor know the culture and was served this Meati classic steak, I would think I am eating some kind of meat, probably stewed or made in a liquid.
Only one store in my town sells it and it is $10.59 a package. This is the only variety they have. If it had satisfied my lust for broiled rib steak, I would get it again even at this price. But it is too expensive to experiment. I am very happy eating tofu and tempeh.
I can buy a pound of tofu for $2.13 and I make a good tasting "steak" out of it. No, the tofu steak doesn't taste like a broiled rib steak either but $2.13 for 16 ounces versus $10.59 for 8.5 ounces!!!
I’m a mushroom hater & I really like these. I made tacos with the carne asada steaks. I like the breaded cutlet but didn’t get a fish vibe from it.
Awesome!
Interested in hearing that as I hate mushrooms too! Good to know it doesn't taste like them! Going to give it a try! Thank you!
I like the bread chicken one. Put in air fryer it was awesome. I had the classic steak. I could eat it but it doesnt taste like steak at all. It taste like some other type of weird meat.. I dont think i would buy it again. I def would buy the crispy cutlet. Its not chicken but I could eat it
7:00 ive tried the meati and I totally get what you're saying ☺️
Thanks!
How does it compare to Quorn?
Tried the asada on the grill. Closest thing to filet mignon ive had in 3 years. Highly recommend!
I have not been getting notifications for y'all! Tell y'alls algorithm to get it together!!!! Now I have to catch up and all that I've missed! 😳
awww
YES, the carne asada is like super cooked down pot roast. I get you.
LOL thanks
I love the Meati crispy cutlets! I like to air fry them.
we did too!
i hate mushrooms and you guys convinced me to try them!! gotta pick up at whole foods
let us know what you think!
I feel Andrew as someone who doesn't like Mushrooms like that, but this has peaked my interest!
Gotta try it yourself!
Tried the carne asada and the first thing I thought was this tastes like "overcooked cheap piece of meat" 🤣🤣 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 wonder of there is a way to avoid that texture.
I totally understood you Larisha 😂
How processed is it?
YES again, the breaded cutlets and Gardein ultimate chick'n filets too taste like fish to me. Not the vibe when you expect chicken but good for that.
LOL right? And when it does and there's SUCH a lack in the market for that I'm like WHHYYYY aren't you marketing as this haha
I thought Meati was delicious!! I was happy the ingredient list is minimal and I can understand all the ingredients. Had become a regular purchase.
Wonderful!
Hi, tried Carne Asada, excellent
Happy to hear that!
I just grabbed the carne asada. Making steak and eggs tonight with air fried seasoned potatoes. If I like it, I'll cop the other two. The caloric amount is low! 230 for both steaks. I'll see what you guys thought!
Let us know what you think!
@@MakeItDairyFree The texture is too tender for steak. The flavor is really close. So close, it almost turned me off. I'm not the type that eats veggie meat to match the taste of actual meat. I like veggie meat that has it's own unique flavor profile. But it was very good. I am positive I could fool people with it. 😄 I love mushrooms but didn't taste the mycelium powder at all. Which makes sense. I'll be trying the other two! Thanks for your review! Website is on point btw. Have shared with several people in my life.
Meati is a good company some people have allergic reactions to mushrooms and I’m one of them. They helped me with that.
I'm not sure I understand
Who helped with what?
How?
@@stephenfisher3721 I talked to them and they explained.
I recently tried these, and I didn't luv them. You do have to season them even the ones pre-seasoned. It was the texture for me, had an airy, wet chew to them. I found it was best to cook until dried out. Also, I personally think they taste of mushrooms, but I luv mushrooms and eat all kinds and these tasted like the long white ones you can get at Asian markets. They aren't bad if you dry them out when cooking and add salt, but for the price, cost me like 8-9 bucks a box, it's not worth the extra work.
Oh no!
I have no idea why, but these made my husband really sick. We tried them a couple of times, both the steak and the chicken and both times he had stomach and/or heartburn issues. The second time we ate the steak, he actually threw up later in the evening. Not sure what would have caused that as he is not allergic to anything, including mushrooms. I personally really liked them and did not experience any issues so I'm really disappointed that I cannot add these to our meal rotation.
oh that's so strange
A good friend of mine had an allergic reaction to Meati and her throat started to close up! It was really scary! They do say on the package you shouldn’t eat them if you are allergic to mushrooms, molds, or yeasts. She didn’t know she was allergic to any of those!
I know I'm late to respond here but wanted to mention I got really sick after eating these also. I tried them three times to make sure and each time the symptoms were worse. There's an allergy statement on the package but it never occurred to me because I have no food allergies. Some people are reporting eating them with no problem until they suddenly seem to have issues. So many have no problem digesting these but be aware if you start having digestive issues.
lol it’s not mushroom root protein, it’s simply mushroom root aka mycelium. I tried it recently and tastes good.
that's what the package says is why we said it like that
Thanks for pointing out that the texture was too much like real meat. I had that reaction the first time I had "meatloaf" made with Beyond Meat ground "beef." It really messed with my mind because the mouth feel and taste were too meat like. I don't want a realistic knock off, I want a substitute that tastes good. Sweet Earth's Mindful Chik'n strips is another brand that has the texture of chicken breast perfected. Depending on how you prepare it, the taste is pretty close as well. In "chicken" pot pie, it was a dead ringer for white meat chicken. In a classic chicken soup recipe, the texture was very chicken-like. However, it lost all flavor when simmered in a broth. So, I agree, when the texture is indistinguishable from real meat, it creeps me out. I suppose these realistic meat substitutes are fine for people who are transitioning off a meat-based diet. But for those of us who are vegan or vegetarian because we don't want to eat animals, and have been on a meat-free diet for years, to eat something that almost perfectly replicates the texture, mouthfeel, and taste of chicken or beef is creepy.
the sweet earth can i microwave it and it taste like chicken and the texture im gonna get one soon
I also see a lot of invisible floaty fuzzy things. “I saw it, it was not there!” 😅
LOL!
I’m excited to try because of the low sodium and low fat content. That is hard to find in fake meat
right!
What I the ingredients,,,mushrooms? What kind or mushroom root????? Like what mysillium??? ✌️😵💫
I thought the Carne Asada one’s texture was like chewed up paper 😅 maybe I didn’t cook it right? But I didn’t find it similar to any kind of real meat at all. Maybe I need to try them all and cook longer. I definitely followed the cooking instructions though.
LOL
I was cooking and listening and i had to stop and watch Andrew’s face 😂😂 because he will not sugar coat it.
So you base your opinions off him?
Larisha is tripping off the mushrooms 🍄🍄🍄🤣🤣🤣
hahah omg that would have been a better one to say haha!
I’m just watching this video but I bought the steak one I was to scared to try thanks for trying so now I’m about to try it lol and I understand her sorry andrew lol
The texture is mushy, the crispy cutlet isn't as bad. I wouldn't compare the texture to that of a nonvegan item. I've tried and just can't add it to the rotation.
I get that
im recently vegetarian and ive been testing all the meats i can get on my hands on, i got the carne asada ones the other day and they are so good 😫😫😫 i plan on getting more, best fake meat ive tried so far.
nice
Gardein has the best fish filet alternative. No contest.
Glad he was willing to have his mind changed haha :)
yes!
Have you had Qorn products? I’m wondering how it compares to that
not many since a lot of their stuff is vegetarian and not vegan
@@MakeItDairyFree ahhh I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder and also your videos and website! I'm dairy free, not completely vegan, but your recipes and reviews are often relevant for me
@@WE__BTS glad to hear that
Come on, Andrew. It’s fantastic!
LOL!
Meati is not made from mushrooms as you know them.
So It is not surprising that Meati doesn't taste like mushrooms.
So It is not surprising that some mushroom eaters have physically reacted differently to Meati than to mushrooms.
Meati is made from mycelium.
The Meati company created the word "MushroomRoot"
because it sounds more comforting and less scary than mycelium.
The manufacturers clearly explain everything on their website but few apparently bother to look and the continued marketing of "MushroomRoot" obscures the science.
I tried the breaded one and thought the same thing, they need to market it as fish not chicken, the texture is too soft for chicken..
To the 'overcooked steak' remark- to me, Meati really has the texture of a super tenderized steak. Like long before I went vegan, I followed experiments Guga did of taking a tough cheap cut & using bromelain from pineapple juice to tenderize it. The result is pretty similar in texture to Meati.
I also hate mushrooms, so I'm super with Andrew here; it really isn't evocative of mushroom at all, it's steak!
I watch your videos frequently but this one was making me a bit upset. First, Meati has been around for a while, although only by mail order until Sprouts picked it up (it's also now available at Whole Foods). What was making me upset was the constant talk of it being made from mushrooms, which it is not. And it clearly says that on the package, and you finally did point that out but be clear that Andrew did not eat something made of mushrooms. I was also confused about the flavors you described. I always grill the steak from frozen (thawed the texture is much too soft) but have never considered it to taste like chicken. To me it's like the most tender filet mignon or a London broil that's been in the oven for hours. It certainly could also be shredded with some BBQ sauce for a sandwich as well. But chicken? Nah. The Crispy Cutlet also does not taste like fish. We have prepared it as chicken parm. The regular cutlet, seasoned well, we cube and use as a chicken Caesar salad. No fish taste at all. They also have a plain steak, which we've used for steak salad, and they are coming out with some new items soon. We love the Meati products, and they are affordable! I am glad, though, that Andrew finally gave in and realized it wasn't going to be mushrooms.
I was excited for this product, but found out I am sensitive to something in the ingredients. I'm guessing it's the mushrooms although I eat mushrooms almost every day. After eating the chicken Meati, I vomited around 2 hours later and stomach felt queasy for the rest of evening and next day. Be careful!
It's not plant based, it's fungal based. Taste like meat because fungi are more closely related to us than plants.
tomato - tamato
I understand ya on the chewy thing lol.
lol thanks
There's also one unseasoned steak as well
