When I was buying books in the early 90s I was left with the impression that I HAD to do ceremony (thinking back to casting my first circle with my 3 year old in the backyard). Wicca was synonymous as witch in my eyes.
I was grateful for witchcraft being recognized as a religion in 1999 when I put together my parenting time agreement and got all of the quarter and cross quarter days and was protected by law!
    Great video.

Glad you posted. I don't practice Wicca but enjoy your content.

I love "operative" vs "ceremonial" as distinctions a lot better than "High magick" (ceremonial) vs "low magic" (folk magic) which was how I was originally taught in the '90's.

I'd actually enjoy reintroducing the terms operative and ritual witchcraft in my own social circles. You make valuable points regarding the potentially helpful use of both of these terms and perhaps within 5-10 years we can see a balance between the pendulum debate on 'what makes a witch'.

I enjoyed this video. I haven't heard anyone say that wiccans aren't witches yet...which is crazy to think about. For me, if you research and practice witchcraft or magick you're a witch. What are your thoughts on Wiccas high turnover rate?

I think that there's a general cultural idea that if you're interested in occultism, you should start out with Wicca before moving on to more "serious" stuff. That happens less and less these days, but for a while we saw most beginners shuffled toward Wicca even if it wasn't what they were looking for--and then inevitably leaving once they had their footing and better knew how to articulate what they wanted.

@@JackChanek I agree, it seems like it turned into a stepping stone into the community.

Instead of saying that Wicca is a type of witchcraft and since you claimed Wicca is definitely it's own thing, would it be more accurate to state that Wicca is merely influenced by witchcraft in the same syncretic ways as it was by other philosophies and religions?

    • @JackChanek

That doesn't strike me as the most accurate way to frame it. The practice of both operative and ritual witchcraft doesn't merely influence Wicca; it defines it.

What are some Operative Witchcraft spell books you would recommend for people interested in doing it as a Wiccan?

I'm curious about your thoughts on witchcraft as a subversive practice!
