Finally, a sensible critic reviewing the film with no pre conceived notion...you criticise the film but don't abuse the film maker...Animal may be good or bad, I don't know; at least Sandeep made a film true to his convictions than pandering to audience or critics...a real artist has to be like this

This is how you should review a movie. It proves why BR is the best, unafraid to express thoughts. What caught my attention was BR incorporating Animal Kingdom terms throughout the review, aligning them with the movie's theme. Kudos, BR. Sandeep rightly called BR India's top critic, dismissing others as 🤡s

It's scary to see such a degrading, scary movie that normalises domestic abuse getting so many circle jerks from BR and in comments. We are seeing a new low in Indian cinema by the name Vanga. And reviewers who completely ignore the social aspects of a movie are just not the type we want because they ultimately reduce everything out of their social/political implications. This precisely reduces this 'review' to just a circle jerk. And it's unbelievable when BR talks to progressive directors like Vetri or Mari. #Animal was criticized by many for its misogyny scenes. But another issue that many fail to notice is the Hinduism/Islamic hatred that permeates the film.
Nayak's company name is the Hindu symbol Swastik. The man narrates almost like a nasal band. The hero's partner, the villain, becomes a convert to Islam out of necessity. The only reason given is that Muslims can marry multiple women. While Hindu wives are portrayed as female goddesses for the Hindu hero to fall in love with his wife, those who become the wives of the Muslim villain are portrayed as smokers, amorous, and married of convenience.
A Hindu preacher who drinks urine without question, talks rationally and self-righteously only to the church father.
#Animal is the most dangerous film that has fueled the Islamophobia of the Hindu northerners just as it has reaped revenue by inciting violence and sexuality.

    Review of Baradwaj Rangan
There was a time when Baradwaj Rangan reviews were measured and socially conscious. Today Baradwaj's measure of success is also dependent on creating a rapport with established directors owing to which reviews have been watered down. Rather than being outright critical, BR takes a savior position and builds a narrative closer to the mainstream audience and directors.
True fans want to see BR flexing his skills and critiquing independently with a strong voice.
Besides, high time we stop enabling scripts like this. Some rad dud is gonna carry a gun to a school and feel he is right.
    Somewhere we need a correction?
Cultural leaders and movie reviewers have a say.

    • @amithmanoj
      @amithmanoj Před 9 měsíci +2

I'm not very sure about the socially conscious part. If you watch one of the old Film companion videos, where there's a very fruitful discussion among Anupama, Sucharitha and him, regarding films and their social responsibility, he shares how he has always viewed films and how he likes to analyse them. Do check it out. It somehow doesn't align with what you've mentioned, but then again Ive just recently started to follow him.
And about you saying that he's watered down his reviews and has started to just give reviews based on mass appeal, you should check out his reviews of movies like Jawan, Leo and Jailer. Blockbusters of their own industries, but no, he analysed them promptly and was very critical of those movies and the craft.
What I liked about his review was that while people were reviewing it through a politically correct lens(which is equally needed), he's the one critic who analysed it for the craft it is and analysed it for its parallels with other works and the subtext of the movie which I feel was missing from the other critiques which just boiled down to it's political correctness and almost nothing about the craft of cinema

    • @amithmanoj

Actually I’m quite surprised with the way BR has reviewed animal.. He addresses this mere incoherent and inconsistent movie as a passable watch even which it is not. Actually in Leo review, I could see he was utterly disappointed after watching the movie. Even created terminologies like SGMs 😂. I don’t even need to explain how Leo is better. I get it that baddy is little more disappointed with the leo movie(maybe due to his expectations from Lokesh). But I feel he should have kept the balance equally while reviewing this movie criticising all aspects, which he usually does. Sad to see he is trying to find better bits in the whole chaos. BTW have been following you since Film Companion. Big Fan.

The best review of Animal. Similar thoughts here too. I liked the treatment of the cliches, the performances, and the first half. Some seemingly random moments pop, like Ranbir and his black cats coming out of their cars or him and his cousins seeking his father's blessings. There is a great sense of style in these scenes. But the film becomes a bit too predictable in the second half. I disliked the father-son treatment, especially. Because it has the look and feel of a Dharma drama, but tonally, it doesn't quite fit into this film because we don't feel for the protagonist at all. But I mostly agree with your review. Very well reviewed, indeed.

Crucial factor ppl tend to miss : The Godfather, released back then, too had patriarchal overtones, where the mafia did not involve the women. Marlon Brando says as much in the film "Children, women can make mistakes, but men can't." Al Pacino's wife's character represents a woman suffering in a patriarchal set up.
In such a controlled, agressive and dominating world of Godfather & Animal it's inevitable for some groups to fall by the wayside & be dominated by another. How difficult is it to understand for other so called Critics?
Ps: before anyone thinks I'm condoning whatever is there in the film- I didn't like Arjun Reddy, character or protagonist. And going by the talk of this film, I might watch it on OTT but doubtful whether I'll enjoy it. My only bone to pick is with politically correct critics who can't seem to take off their political lens.

Then there's no difference b/w us and what we are against. My only contention is most reviewers, especially up North, are so severe on the politics of a film(any film) & by extension, become judgemental about the director, makers, etc. W/o judging a film purely for what it sets out to say, and what it has achieved by the end. There was so much written about the politics of films like Pathan or Jawaan, which were straight up crap masala films. There is an absolute inability of the reviewers to see a film as a film, w/o looking at everything thru' a political lens. That's what I was outraged about. And that's where I find BR to be the best.

Because in Arjun reddy the protogonists character drive the story through its interaction with its environment which create Conflicts. where as in Animal Ranbir kapoor character has nothing to do with creating Conflict( the rift with antagonist)as the Conflicts in this movie was created by his grandfather and his past. So existence of Ranbir kapoors toxic masculine character wasn't needed in the movie at first place unlike it was totally necessary in Arjun reddy .
