What did you think of MEN?
Did the ending work for you or ruin it?

I did not like the ending. I would not say it ruined it but it was baffling.
@@joshuabmcclellan I liked the ending. I think Garland was being more cheeky than people realized. It was gruesome and over the top, but then went quiet. You thought she would stab him but she did not. It went back to their original argument again.
The title of the film itself is almost like an exasperated person saying "Men! They're all alike!"
The supernatural elements combined with her trauma to create the narrative. I disagree with people who see something larger in the ending.
No. If anything, the ending basically changed my rating from a "Meh" to me concluding that this is the first A24 film I dislike. I won't spoil what happens, but it just felt like a total scapegoat for people that were hoping for answers, or at least some form of clear ambiguity.
I really enjoyed it! One thing I liked about the cgi face what the movie making it clear that all “men” (pun kinda intended) were the same. Then with wild shit end 😂…. But i liked how it led to the realization of the ending. I will say I laughed at the ending but it was more so just from wtf was happening but I can see how a full audience obnoxiously laughing could take you out of the moment.
I dug it i thought that scene was basically establishing its generational and eventhough every monster manifests itself differently they are all linked by the same ugly disease. What i also liked was the little kid character…theres a saying that the worst type of male toxic ego is often created by mothers hence the feminine mask. Again just my opinion i thought the movie was pretty good.
I saw this last night and there was a family that brought their two young children with them to watch this movie 😭
Those parents should be arrested 😂
No wayyy… I’m a full grown adult and I am traumatized after watching this movie
this why i’m happy to have private screenings
Maybe she thought she was in the theater for sonic 2.
Gross
This one kinda felt like The Lost Daughter. In the sense that a reserved woman is going away to a remote location to take her mind off things in her past & she’s treated either cold or harsh by nearly everyone around her.
Both films have strange things that happen and are never addressed again. And both endings leave the audience feeling cold.
During the last few scenes of the movie, I was looking around the theater to see if anyone walked-out early. No one walked out. Then again, there was 10 people in my theater.
There were a couple in my theater who kept soft talking throughout the movie and it was pretty annoying. I almost wanted to tell then to shut up. But it's funny that during the final act they got really quiet like they were in total shock.
A handful of people walked out of my theatre and I don't blame them. This movie wasn't good
There was 6 people in my theatre and I peaced out when the treeguy started to give birth. I was contemplating leaving for 15-20 min already, so I was ready. A terribly boring movie, unscary, on the nose symbolism. All mEN aRe bAD, duuurrrrrrrrr. Waste of $8 and an hour of my time.
@@marquezo That is your opinion. Nobody walked out when I saw it.
@@jamestkirkcameron9189 Really shows that you didn't finish it or think about anything you saw. It's not a "all men bad" movie whatsoever. Then again, the movie is definitely not for everybody.
Jessie Buckley is incredible in everything she's in. This movie was on the level of Mother as far as insanity and weirdness. I dug it. Definitely one of the most unique flicks this year.
Oooooh, I loved mother! I’m excited for this one
@@MrFanomusic24 don’t be
Except mother! is an intelligent biblical allegory that's far more disturbing, shocking, and intense, whereas this is just a hot, pretentious mess.
Mother! Is not even close to intelligent. This at least tells its own story.
I was horrified during the last 10 minutes but I can’t lie, when the feet thing happened I laughed
Just walked out of this movie. Sitting in my car and said out loud WHAT THE F**K. Wow….😵💫
I had to find a review on this, because seriously wtf lol
I had to find a review too cause like huh I’m still trying to process what I just watched lol
I walked out too homie that shit will live in my head for a while
i am still speechless lmfao
in a bad way
I understand why a lot of people are gonna hate the ending. It slowly builds this creepy, nefarious situation, and just when you think things are gonna "pop off" and start answering your questions, it descends into what feels in the moment like hallucinatory absurdity. Even recognizing the (honestly heavy-handed) metaphor of "THAT" scene as it was happening, I STILL left the theater unsure of how to process it all. Such an ending is definitely not a "crowd pleaser" as most won't be able to think through what the film is trying to say with that sequence even AFTER the fact, as sad as it is to say. lol
But I love how, in hindsight of understanding "THAT" scene, I can think back on all the details, events, dialogues, and oddities up to then that didn't make sense, were mysterious, or seemed innocuous at the time of their occurrence, and realize that every single one of those things has its place in the film for very specific reasons and enhance the messages contained within the more you think upon them. It's absurd some people think this movie has a "bad story." I liked it when I walked out of the theater, and came to love it the more I've thought about it.
I think this is truly a great example of a horror drama that is very introverted in exploring the pain and fear of this one character. And how that very death becomes the catalyst of her anguishing in torment and paranoia.
Definitely a second viewing is in order.
It could have been great but the end was more going for “let’s see how weird we can make this” instead of making the story progress…. It was (or could have been) a real yet strange movie. If it left you with a cliff hanger like “wtf just happened” but it’s all supposed to be real? 🤷🏻♂️
@@chasecarroll3 I think that was on purpose though. If it went normal and answered all the questions it would have given you a too clear message, it couldn't have tackled nearly as many issues. I think it's trying to tackle the complexity and nuance of abuse, trauma and how women experience fear in life and society. It would be so hard to tackle all these things head on, plus then you risk demonizing things like "all men" as many have still interpreted and religion but I don't think it wanted to generalize. I think It wanted to express the consequences of certain aspects of our culture and how cycles of abuse and attitudes are perpetuated and forced on others. It also contends with grief and suic!de and the guilt that comes with that. Also about how women are made to take on the emotional burden and responsibility for men who were raised in an abusive manor to not feel but also to be entitled to that feminine support. It of course criticizes religions part in that culture. I think many people interpret the movie as hating men but the men turn out kind of tragic. She ultimately realizes it's not her responsibility to carry their burdens and ends the cycle. It's actually really hard to explain. There's so many layers.
Watched this with friends.. and as soon as the husband was like “I’ll kill myself and it’ll be on you” I turned to my friend and told her “ I love this movie “
And at the end they called me a psycho (per usual ) because I was the only one who enjoyed it all the way through 💀
The birth of a fascinating thought.
There are moments in “Men” that will cause your breath to quicken and your heart to pound. Still others will leave you scratching your head and stifling laughter.
But then we reach his wild, muscular climax-and that’s where things ultimately fall apart.
pulled that straight off of rotten tomatoes💀
what movie did you watch. this movie sucked. HORRIBLE!!
This movie was shit
A shocking and divisive end sequence has me even more intrigued and excited than I already was…but also a lot more nervous lol. Hoping to see it with a group of friends so I can have immediate conversations lol
Don’t recommend watching with friends 😂.. unless they have somewhat of an idea of what to expect.. half of mine understood and the other half said I couldn’t pick a movie to watch again💀…
Loved it though.. and we got some laughs and deep conversations in
Agree with you, I love the first and second act of the movie, its imagery, the music, the sound works, everything build up well to creep the hell out of you, and until the final act, such bonkers wrap up, need time to process as a whole.
May have to check this project out just to see the last 10min/final sequence you referenced.....
Love both Ex Machina + Annihilation so can’t wait for this film! Oscar Isaac pushes Ex Machina forward just enough to be my favorite among Garland’s so far.
It's a let down
Don't get your hopes up 😩.
Doesn’t even come close to those 2 great films.
I was so not ready for the ending of this movie
Superb film. For big fans of Mother. So much to unpack in this movie. I watched it last night and its been in and out of my head ever since. The last 10 minutes are seared in my mind.
I feel sorry for anyone that doesnt 'get' it by the end of the movie cos they will probably ask for a refund. I will be watching it again for the things I missed the first time round.
Great review Austin I wasn’t sure about watching but you’ve definitely swayed me with intrigue…👌💛🎥
Saw this last night......A24 just can't seem to miss.....The 2nd half of this film is wild
Watched it last night, I agree with you on this.
The final act had my jaw on the floor, yet at the same time didn't quite feel warranted.
I wish the countryside setting and characters played more into the tension - the pub scene for example, I'm from the UK and these country pubs can be super creepy and intimidating - 'youre not welcome here' vibes. Wish they'd played more on that stuff.
And from the shallow depth of field shots in the first half, to the ambiguity of the metaphor - this one did stink a little of pretentiousness.
65% from me
I was hoping the pub scene was a beginning to it turning into something like hot fuzz in terms of setting. the english countryside thing is always cool to explore.
The further away from this I get, the more I do appreciate it and it's swings
People walked out of my showing in San Antonio. Some people were laughing at the absurdity of it. I can't blame them, I've never seen anything like it.
Bro I watched at Westlakes Santikos and a couple just walked out....there were only two other couples.

*THANK YOU AUSTIN!!!* I thought I was the only one who thought It was pretentious.
As far as i remember, A24 horror movies are for the most part artistic but pretentious too at the same time
LOL the opening
I’m not sure exactly what I saw, but I know I’ll never forget it!
hey Austin where’d you get that shirt? lol i’m from lexington & love that

I agree. The CGI moment was comical at best but it didn’t work.
Enjoyed the beginning and build up but yeah that ending fell a little short. I get what they were going for but idk if it worked.
I watched it . Felt it lacked something. was a little unsettled at times but never got truly scared .
Great cold opening.
I’m going to watch it this week. If the ending is anything similar to what I’m envisioning from your “firm” and “open up” comments, I’m coming back to write a micro aggressive comment about you spoiling it for me.
Hey Austin will u be reviewing Downton Abbey 2? I really enjoyed your review for the first one. I hope u review it. Have a nice day
I felt like I was watching the longest NFT art at the end....thats not a good thing.
At the end of the day I want the movie to be enjoyable....after the ending I didn't feel satisfied with what I just watched...the tension building was good at points and ridiculous at others....but the payoff was nothing....it goes back to the trope of the ending is the hardest part to nail...this falls in line with a shocking ending with little actual substance.
Pretentious is a great word for this movie and I'm sure people will rack their brains to find some redeeming quality of this film to call it a masterpiece just like people will look at a black dot on a canvas and shell out millions of dollars for it because it is so "deep". Just like an NFT...cultish hype for nothing
You shouldn't have to convince yourself that something is good.
My mom took me to all kinds of heavy films when I was a kid. She was the best mother a little sht could have. She really was. She was a single mom who took care of everything as good as any succesful married couple. Now that I'm an adult; I can say it's generally not a good idea to show your kids disturbing stuff. The determining factor for me; as a father; is the maturity level of the child. For reasons I don't give a sht to expand on; I had to grow up at an extremely early age. I was always hanging with people 8-10 years my senior and undoubtedly related to them better; had more in common with these people. I remember my first R rated film in a cinema was Blade. It was my best friend Kareems birthday. We were hardly out of the single digits, age-wise. THAT MOVIE WAS BLOODY! I remember being shocked at the amount of blood in it. It was a good time for all of us kids. My mother took me to South Park: BLU; American Beauty; Halloween TYL; Freddy vs Jason; Scream 2; Urban Legends; Texas Chainsaw Massacre; The Green Mile; American Pie; Jeepers Creepers, etc. It never had any negative effects on me. The granddaddy of them all is the Star Wars Trilogy; episodes IV, V and VI. They remastered them in 97-98; somewhere around there. It was a boxed set or home video and they were also re-released in cinemas. I saw each of the original trilogy TWICE! It will never be topped. Just incredible on a big screen with the surround sound thudding like canons. Independence Day was one of the very best, too. The SW trilogy will be a highlight til I'm not kicking anymore.
Will you be reviewing HeartStopper?
I saw the movie and I absolutely loved it!
I totally agree about the ending! First half was phenomenal with the building of atmosphere and subtlety, but once that final sequence hit, the movie totally lost me. There were only 6 or 7 people in the theater with me and all of us started glancing at each other and chuckling; making sure we were all seeing the same thing on screen!
If the film had kept a more subtle approach throughout, I believe it would have served its message so much more. The ending really overserved its purpose. All in all, incredible performances, incredible cinematography, incredible atmosphere, but a definite overkill on its conclusion.
💯💯💯 agreed
Yes, im down for a Rated R Garland filM!
sick intro 😂
I absolutely agree with your review. The film was a five star for me but dropped to a four on the ending. Having said that, given that good horror movies are as rare as hen's teeth a 4/5 for one is still outstanding. I think the title 'Men' could have been far better - a bit too obvious and lessened the impact. ------------- SPOILERS BELOW----------
And a bit more could have been made of the Green Man Kinnear was turning into at the end. In some ways it's easier to deal with if you see it as all some schizophrenic break this woman has had -the blood is real but has she actually just killed a lot of (non lookalike in real life) villagers herself while imagining all this? We see almost everything from her point of view, after all...
As for explaining nothing at the end -sometimes that is better. For me the hokey explanation of Hereditary at the end took that down a bit for me, likewise the 'brain swapping' of Get Out.
I was curious from the marketing alone, now convinced I will see it this weekend! Thanks for the nudge, brother!
When someone is named Joffrey, you better run!!!
Excited for this!
Joffrey? Wasnt that the sadistic fella in GOT?✌🏻😉
i saw this movie in a totally empty movie theatre with a friend i was meeting IRL for the first time. that shit hit different. 10/10
Horror movies from A24 are unmissable, it seems. Can't wait to see this and Bodies, Bodies, Bodies.
Also, that intro is national gold😂😂
That intro 😂
Yeah man, that movie was a wild ride.
Just saw it wow what an experience
Went to see it today and it's a very bewildering movie. When you said some people were laughing at the last ten minutes, I did as well. It was due to a mix of emotions, but more so because I could not believe what I was seeing. It really took me out of the movie and I could not take it seriously. The acting in the movie is what stands out and helps redeem the movie for me.
It was absurdist Lynchian dream horror but I felt the birthing scenes were very meaningful (a man trying to become "reborn" but never changing), until her reaction became emotionless and resigned, diminishing the meaning of the preceding scenes. I felt that a beat was missed for emotional impact and clarity. It became very pedestrian on the couch, and while I got the message, I felt it was a too curt of a way to tie things up.
Ex machina
Annihilation
And now men.looking forward for it.btw Austin great review.
gawd damnit i was going to use that song in my video. It was an obvious joke.
Garland has never stuck the landing. I will never forgive him for Sunshine twist
Burke: "I can't wait to see the Cinemascore. It's gonna' be low. It's gonna' be like an F."
Close enough, Burke. It's a D+ Cinemascore. I would've predicted a solid D.
I love the film.it captured the horror, the underlying, prey like quality of how it feels like to be a woman at times. Horror movies never scare me but this one did and left me unsettled for days after.
VIKRAM TRAILER REACTION!
Walkouts at my theater. I was very uncomfortable lol
Just walked out of it, and idk lol.
I love “artsy” films, and I usually get the symbolism even when others around me don’t…. This film, however, I’m still trying to process.
Do each of the different characters she encounters represent a different caricature of toxic men??
….
More specifically her husband I’m guessing
It's about her reliving manipulation and abuse from men she's cared about, in a death dream. The many men played by one man, along with the title, implies she sees all men as being the same way, and mostly bad.
Austin. I’m very curious; however I have the feeling in going to hate it as much as I HAATEEEE midsommar
Awesome review!
I hated "Midsommar" too. Terrible movie.
This what I'd consider a Post modern art movie would be like. The blood on the floor at the very end suggests all it happened was real and not a trauma which would make more sense. The movie is well acted with a nice use of scenery to create a mood and the ending is clearly a metaphor coming to life in the literal sense. The message the movie is trying to give away could be more developed and have a little more reasoning. Men's insecurities, fears and all the negatives of dealing with relationships are somewhat portrayed here but it could be done better. Does this movie wants you to hate men? That's subjective, the final 10 minutes do seem to make a point on "every men is the same" stigma but barely makes a point on why. I don't consider this a bad movie because it's interesting but it could be much better in my opinion.
The way i enjoy horror movies is that i put myself in the characters shoes while im watching but this one i couldnt it was unpredictable
In general, Alex Garland projects tend to have a narrative throughline, an apparent and clear plot that can be followed easily, even if it is more difficult to interpret. In MEN, I think Harper’s clearly schizophrenic. This isn’t like Devs or Ex Machina, which were fairly linear. Annihiliation was a little more heady and esoteric, but one of the things I like about Garland’s work is that it is, indeed, open to interpretation. Ex Machina could be the most feminist or misogynnistic movie ever, depending on how you want to see it.
1) In the case of MEN, I think the “It’s about toxic masculinity,” is so overt that it would be boring to take this at face value. Even the title wants you to see this first-and-foremost. It was called men, but it could have been called GASLIT, BRUTALITY, MISOGYNY, THE DIVORCE, TOXICITY, all to mostly the same effect. What if it had been called, “Summer Cottage,” or “Breathing Room,” or something that doesn’t lay out the face value presentation (Men bad, Men attack Harper).
2) I wonder what the reason for her wanting to leave was. I have no basis for this, but I wonder if it’s him wanting to have a kid (based on what happens later), and her wanting to see “what the next chapter of [her] life holds.
2a) I don’t think the husband hit her. In that scene, the camera moves to behind her husband, and we see him move suddenly and she flies back - we don’t actually see her being hit. Another suggestion she’s schizophrenic, imagining things, or indeed this is a world where the third act makes sense.
3) Rory Kinnear being all men was intentional. “Men are all the same,” “They only want one thing,” “If you have met one, you’ve met them all.” It wasn’t supposed to be unsettling or bizarre; it was purposeful. They’re all out to get her - all men.
4a) The husband threatening suicide is a gender role reversal. Check rates of suicide for men and women, also, attempts vs actual suicides, you’ll see that men succeed far, far more often: it’s practical for men, and a cry for help for women (based on how often they attempt vs fail). The husband if threatening suicide in the statistically provable female sense. And . . .
4b) I think he really did fall. If he were to commit suicide, which men to for a practical reason, he would have likely jumped off facing away from the building, resolute. Now, maybe, just maybe he knew he’d catch a glimpse of her as he fell facing the building, but in all likelihood, he was trying to climb down from the apartment above and fell, hence his facing the building.
5) The main character is maybe late 30s, pre-wall. Despite being on the fast-track to becoming invisible (early middle aged woman), the more men are out to get her. Desperate for attention as her sexual agency wanes, she is only able to amplify her victimhood, reassuring her that “all men are out to get her,” despite being invisible, or incomparable in sexual agency compared even to herself 10 years younger, the silent epiphany many women have starting aged 29-31.
6a) She was delighting at the tunnel echoing her sentiments; a younger woman, saying what she things, connected to the world (twitter?) yelling and having her biases reaffirmed over and over, hearing her opinions reverberated ad infinitum, in her echo chamber. In fact, it might be the only time she shows joy in the movie - opining into the darkness, and having her voice echo back. “You’re right, hun,” “You go girl,” or any other number of echoed sentiments would be the same as her hearing her voice repeating itself, irrespective of the sentiment.
6b) Things “turn” in interactions with men whenever they start to doubt her, have a different opinion, or present empirical evidence. I think this is most present in the scene with the vicar. He’s listening to her, and the moment he says something that contradicts what she feels, what she wants to believe, he’s immediately the predator; the enemy. “Maybe he wanted to apologize,” immediately snap her into “all men are the enemy mode,” likewise, even the original walk-through with the caretaker, the camera stops and there is a forceful pause with the, (abridged) “Don’t flush your pads; we have a septic tank here, not a sewer.” The point where the interactions turn toxic is the point where mean disagree with her opinion, suggest a different one, suggest she’s wrong, or want to use evidence to back what they’re saying.
7) I am not sure about the last act in general, though. This is Garland’s least straightforward project by a long shot. We’re in the head of an insane person, or . . . this is a world where those things can happen. And, I don’t mean, “Will likely happen at some point,” like Devs or Ex Machina, as what happens here is a stretch. That being said . . .
8) Riley shows up, and certainly will affirm and believe her story. Believe all women, and other women - the sisterhood - will believe the story that she tells of men being birthed out of other men through the mouth, fully grown. The only time her schizophrenic illusion is abetted is with another woman.
She's not schizo, she's drowning
Saw it last night So grateful for these reviews to help me wrap my head around it…

Spoilers:
The naked green guy transforms into all the same-face men who each try to attack her (one attempts to initiate a sexual scene before subdued by a stab wound).
These men all sustain the same injuries that her deceased husband did during his death (sliced arm and twisted ankle). The men begin giving birth through various orifices to each subsequent same-face man before finally giving birth to her dead husband. Naked and bloody and injured. They sit in the couch and talk, and he announces he only wants her love.

A kid did run around my theater!
I think he just ran in, and the mother grabbed them out. LUCKILY IT WAS EARLY IN THE MOVIE!
Another good flick for date night.
I watched it.
My friend and I saw it and thought it was way too gross and the symbolism was so obvious that it made the movie feel very pretentious and cheap.
There were so many better ways to make a thriller with the same general message but make it less gross, more subtle, and explore more of Harper's character.
We thought it would be great to have different men around a small town embody specific toxic flaws and positive aspects of Harper's late husband with a couple of the men being actively out to harm her and she has to come to a better understanding of what made her late husband tick and flaws even within herself in order to survive and interact with the more normal townsfolk who seem to think she is initially at fault for the misfortune she is undergoing.
You could still end on the same sort of final moment with her husband in the real movie as a way of ending the conceptual redesign we came up with.
Let me know if that sounds like a better movie if you actually watched MEN.
It does
I do think your movie idea sounds great but I think the message you're going for is completely different than what this movie was going for. Admittedly I didn't care for this movie when I left the theater but it stuck with me and the more I thought about what it was trying to get at the more I liked it.
It doesn’t at all
Would’ve been a much better story for sure. You put it perfectly, the whole “toxic masculinity” theme it was trying to portray was very pretentious.
That sounds like a different way to present the movie, which is probably how a lot of people would do it, but wasn't how the writer and director wanted to do it. I applaud their way, even though I would have done it my own way.
I'm seeing it tonight so thank you for a spoiler free review :)
Oof that name title though.
So... did the FEMALE friend REALLY text back, "I already know where you are, u stupid bitch!" (or something like that), or did a guy hack the friend's phone, or was the text just imaginary? Because, in the end, the FEMALE friend was actually normal and nice...
P.S. Jessie Buckley looks like Neve Campbell, which is kind of perfect!
She was also pregnant, if that adds anything important
@@kratosSOZ Yes. I did notice that. So a mood swing? Lol. Or she herself was pregnant with a future asshole guy? Idk
I agree with your review 100%. I was onboard the first 2/3 of the movie...then they lost me. And I agree with other comments about this having a Mother! vibe. All I can say is I have zero desire to see this movie again. Makes me sad because I was so looking forward to this movie ever since I saw previews sometime back. This was my intro to Alex Garland...can't say I'm eager to see others!
Men, Swiss Army Man, The Death of Dick Long, Low Tide, and The Last Black Man in San Francisco are some of the best A24 movies.
So yeah...this really was one of the freakiest endings I've ever seen. I understood what was going on and why this played out for her in this way. I did leave the theatre with my head in a weird place hoping not to revisit that ending during my sleep. It's morning now and I woke up with those images as soon as I became conscious. LOL. Overall, I loved the actors, the story, the imagery and that HAND! I will definitely have to see this again.

I went to the movies to watch it. Everyone in the theater was like what. The. Fuck.
I laughed soooo much, wow-- they tried to be way too poetic with the repeated birth and grief layered metaphors... I've seen Strange 2 five times now though 🤷🏾♂️ to each their own.
@Madi you're welcome! I don't think films like Men will be talked about in 10 years after the shocking imagery gets leaked, but I'll watch Strange 2 every year for Halloween. To each their own 🤟🏾
@Madi exactly what I was thinking 🤣👏🏼
@@nailinthefashion i seriously cannot believe how much people like marvel movies lol. they're fun, but let's be honest, they're mostly a mess and they take zero risks and they're not really about anything at all. the moral of the story is always the same. at least you can reflect on garland's movies for more than 5 seconds after they're done. i'd be sad if interesting films died and were replaced by popcorn flicks. hope i'm not alone in that
@@gregkrazanski if you don't get much out of them, then, that's your perspective. I'm up to my sixth viewing of Strange 2 and it still makes me laugh + cry, feel hope for the Young Avengers, contemplate how far I'd go to reach my own goals, etc.
Deeper films will never stop being made just because Marvel ones exist. If that's what you fear, if you want to see something else, start writing. Start going to film festivals. No one is in your way except you.
I’m heard someone gag in my theater during the climax
🖤
i think the cgi face was absolutely intentional. two words: uncanny valley.
I’ve been waiting since February for this movie I’m so excited to see it!!
Don’t see it
Only grey Trilogy scars me and disturb me !
I like high concept and horror films. That said, I did not like this film. It didn't lift a finger to help us to understand what was going on in the plot. It was a visual masterpiece, but if there's no exposition to bring the audience along with the story, it makes it difficult for us to connect through our shared experience and understanding of the film. Just my opinion, but it felt like high concept for the sake of high concept
The exposition is mostly symbolic, and I think I understood most or of all of it. It's completely from her perspective though, and of being manipulated and abused by her husband (if not more men). The birthing scene is her seeing a man promise to change but he doesn't. The Vicar is "the saint" part of the gaslighting man, putting guilt on her, yet also using that professed moral high ground as a way to manipulate sex from her (including unwanted deviant and fetishized sexual actions), while also professing hatred for the influence her body has on them (more unwarranted blame). It's all very heavy relationship stuff, but seen from the cynical and hateful perspective of a broken woman seeing all of these horrible behaviors by men in her life as being inherent to all men and of all men being the same. It's atrocious but somewhat understandable, since so many men so often act terrible just to get sex or control someone. So if I see it in the light of her defeated screaming death-dream perspective, it's easier to understand and not write off.
i don't think it's that complicated... just a big metaphor for her coming to terms with that at their cores, most if not all men are awful or at least have some awful component to their values/personalities. she came to recognize/acknowledge/accept that about her husband in the end. i think that's it plot-wise really, the rest is just layering on the metaphor with different examples
@@gregkrazanski "most if not all men are awful" is a sexist statement
What a movie, had me laughing, shocked, horrified and just thinking wtf
Well worth a watch but its slow paced and leaves you wanting more.
I don’t like using the word pretentious but … I just felt like the director was alternating between being purposefully indulgently vague & beating us over the head with obvious scenes of men just being rude
I think a24 is going beast mode with it's horror movies... 👍🤯
The only thing horrifying about this movie is that producers gave it a green light.
@@jamestkirkcameron9189 is it that bad?? I personally liked "X" i expect "men" to be good too
@@netizen7402 I never saw "X" so I don't have a frame of reference in that regard. But "Men", was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I peaced out of it with maybe 10-15 min left in the film. It wasn't scary at all, incredibly slow(in a bad way), and the symbolism of the movie comes from a very misandrist point of view. I wouldn't pay theatre prices if I were you, maybe wait until it's streaming if you must watch and see for yourself.
@@jamestkirkcameron9189 okay since you're the one who watched it I will take your guidance, thank you btw 🙂
@@netizen7402 when you say "x" do you mean Ex Machina?
Many say its pretty similar to 2017 movie mother! with Jennifer Lawrence. You agree?
My thoughts exactly.
I laughed because it was so unexpected and silly lmao but I get the metaphor
What was the metaphor?
Finally watched Sorry to Bother You and alot of the stuff you used to describe this movie is how I felt about that. "WTF did I just watch"😶
Annihilation was my favorite movie of 2018, but I'm totally meh in Men.
Feels like the first miss of Garland's career.
I went and saw the movie I didn't like it I mean it was cool at some parts beautiful scary creepy but the ending was just kind of a bit much it just wasn't for me
The CGI was definitely intentional
MAN BAD: The Film
So you like men hmm? What would your wife say?
