Aside from those in the scences, though, the chances of someone feeling lonely while in bed with their sleeping SO, or beside their sleeping child, or keeping vigil by a sleeping friend's sickbed, or on a bus/train/plane/car ride, etc...is practically impossible. Being awake near a sleeper is so specific! ;P

one of my favourite things about this show is realistic aspect of it. like how Rebecca isn't wearing makeup in jail, how they aren't all white and skinny, it just makes me feel safe. y'know?

I know I’m late to the game commenting here but I’m a psychologist (I’ve both ran clinical programs and provided group and one-on-one psychotherapy), I mainly work in addictions but I’ve worked quite a bit with BPD patients as well given the semi-high rate of comorbidity between the two. I think psychologists should watch and would enjoy this show as much as I have all 10 times I’ve watched it. It’s highly, highly accurate, doesn’t stigmatize, and the realistic yet similarly hope-driving representation of the symptoms of BPD as they play out in a person are absolutely spot on. They had to have had multiple licensed clinical psychologists and/or social workers on staff and/or consultants who are diagnosed with BPD and stable, there’s no way they could have pulled off such a wonderfully accurate and well balanced representation of mental illness otherwise. And the reason therapists should watch this is because it puts you in the shoes of the patient…their entire shoes. The ups, the downs, the in-between moments, the maladaptive thought processes involved and the adaptive solutions offered by the psychology staff characters….it’s brilliant and holistic in a way that spending 4-8 years in school, 1 hour in front of a patient, or a lifetime of 1 hour snippets of time looking into someone’s life and psyche is not. It’s almost like a fictionalized but accurate and detail-oriented case study, and it hits the nail right on the head. Even the psychotherapist’s perspective is fairly ok, Dr. Akopian, it accurately represents the difficulties that many psychotherapists face when treating certain disorders (though I can 100% confirm I would not bill a patient for hours they didn’t attend nor would I tell myself things like “just keep thinking of that kayak” because it’s unethical). My fellow psychologists might feel the same way, but when I watch this show I look for even the most subtle representations of the criteria for BPD, and when you look for them, they’re not only plentiful but incredibly well represented. I see this show as a win for those with BPD, and destigmatizing. It shows that people with a BPD diagnosis can indeed be successful and lovable protagonists.
I was depressed for over 30 yrs also. Antidepressant made all the difference-- I love Rachel Bloom bringing this out!

We are always complaining that we are alone and no one understands us but never try to reach out to others who are in the same problem. "No one else is singing my song" is an ironic representation of it.

Everyone is asking where's white josh so here's my theory: the final episode explains that this is all happening in rebecca's head. We also know that white josh doesn't like rebecca and that rebecca doesn't really care for him either( she heard that his house burned down but waited till the end of to circus to go see what happened and then forgot about it). We see that he is replaced by the grocery store guy who, in my opinion looks a lot like him so i think that rebecca,in her moment of depression just confused white jo with the grocery guy because ,as i said, doesn't really think or care about him or just had a closer conection with the grocey guy than with josh
The grocery guy is actually present in "I have friends". That means he's Rebecca's friend. At least in her mind. White Josh is constantly pushing her away. So he doesn't have any place in her fantasia.

This song captures a sort of loneliness that feels so specific that it feels even lonelier, while at the same time pointing out that in the ways that are important, other people are going through the same thing too.
And as someone who is going through that sort of feeling right now, this song helped. I guess I still feel lonely, but I don’t feel as if I’m lonely alone.

Whenever I feel "unique" for feeling bad I come here and remember, no, I'm not unique, everyone feels shitty sometimes, a lot of people have felt this exact same way, and most have probably felt worse at some point.
I'd like the think that the fact that Rebecca's cell mate is a teen from camp in season 1 (who she specifically interacted with!) and she doesn't even notice is purposeful. Like it's another small way of acknowledging just how self-absorbed Rebecca has been.
One thing is for sure its that no one else can understand how much I love this song.
Point taken, Rachel, but for anyone who actually is dealing with an experience too unique to form an eleven part harmony, you're valid too. Don't beat yourself up for feeling isolated in a legitimately tough situation.

I love Crazy-Ex Girlfriend and I am really sad this is the last season :( it is such a great show with its accurate and nuanced depiction of mental illness and also the musical songs are fun. they make the atmosphere less dark :) the harmonies in this song are bEauTifUL and this isn't overanalyzing, but rebecca doesn't see the other people in the frame at the end so she still thinks she is all alone (which isn't true) and that makes me really excited to see her character development in this season

The song hinges on this impossible group number that’s somehow happening for all these individual characters that think they’re the only one who could possibly be singing/understanding this complex feeling. @@readysetflyyx so I know that I'm overanalyzing this but I'm OCD and that's kinda my whole mental life. There are two thoughts here. 1, this is a pitfall of making a character's low intelligence their main punch line. It limits kewl jokes like this from working completely. 2, these songs are basically from Rebecca's perspective/imagination. This is an extremely clever joke/word play that she would concoct and enjoy. So I get her adding Nathaniel to it as they share that sense of humor and intelligence. Now, since her other former "love" interest Josh is ALSO included, am I to infer that she still is idealizing him, and falsely equating him to her intellectual level due to some latent obsession she still has? I doubt that much was intended here, but my mind went there. (Again I know I'm ridiculously overanalyzing. It's just what I do. So apologies.) Not trying to ruin it for anyone, this is just the dumb places my mind goes...
Sorry to keep rambling here, I'm in some rumination wormhole. What's bothering me about the execution of this insanely clever joke, is that I feel assigning all this extra value (Rebecca level intelligence) to Josh while glossing over a flaw that makes them fundamentally, romantically incompatible is something season 1 Rebecca would do. It's not something for season 4 Rebecca. It undermines her character growth for me. (Although admittedly that could very well be the point, this is a song out of context afterall.) All musicals suspend disbelief when the songs start, but the purpose of the songs is to advance the plot. So yeah it doesn't make sense any of this is happening, but I'm looking for plot points in the song because that is also their very function. Songs don't just tell the story, they ARE the story. And this highlights well that Rebecca is still overly self involved (Although being in jail she kinda has an excuse) and that she overlooks others very similar problems which keeps her from connecting with them and gaining their comfort. (Which is also kinda ironic because connection and comfort are what she craves, but she is almost always her own impediment to getting that.)
christina giangarra No don’t apologize! And your mind isn’t dumb. What you said makes complete sense and what I say or anyone says about the interpretation of the song is inherently right or wrong. It’s all interpretation. I see the song as something happening for Josh and Nathanial as well, so my interpretation of it is different! If you see it as all Rebecca’s concoction, then that’s a completely valid thing to consider re: how she glorifies someone.
I mean he has spent a lot of time with Rebecca, he probably picked up stuff.
