Diana: Alice Ripley
Dan: Brian d'Arcy James
Natalie: Jennifer Damiano
Gabe: Aaron Tveit
March 3rd, 2008. Second Stage Theatre production - Hudba
I love all the clues about Gabe's condition in this song
I love this version of Natalie's verse. It's more frustrated and tired, as opposed to the dark and gloomy album version. I love both.
Natalie Goodman: Best Sarcastic Musical Character Ever XDDDDD
Aaron Tveit's abs. Alice Rpiley's voice. Amazing(:
I didn't pay much heed to Gabe's lyrics the first time I watched this (mostly because whoops there go my pants). And then I watched the rest of the musical. And now that verse is the eeriest thing ever.
Brian D'Arcy is so awesome! Such an incredible instrument.
As much as I love the newer version of this song, I just can't get over how BEAUTIFUL the harmonies are on "stay, stay, stay" at 5:07! Also, the "bum, bum, bum" is so great!
Cool to see the slight but powerful changes from then to now. I especially like the lyric change to "What doesn't kill me..." They changed it from a cliche to a window into the POV of each character.
"That'll teach you to take a whole ten minutes." XD
And damn, Aaron...
Saw this last night at 5th Ave theatre Seattle.
Alice Ripley had a cold and struggled (beautifully) thru the first act. Pearl Sun was Diana for the 2nd act and was awesomely awesome!
words cannot express how much i love this
They all have such strong voices it's very pleasant
Omg Im in looove with Aarom Tveit especially cuz he's in Gossip Girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn that high note at 1:29
@MischiefMovieMakers in this version of the script, she doesn't have a breakdown here. After "Everything Else" there was a song which I think was called "More and More (Costco)" where she had a breakdown in the middle of shopping at Costco, and straight out of that into "Who's Crazy/My Psychopharmacologist and I". There's actually a reference to that in the final version, in "Hey #3" Natalie sings "freaking out at the store" on the list of her mother's breakdowns.
Aaron in boxers... Oh gaaawwwwdddd =3
This song (and the whole score for that matter) never fails to give me chills, especially from the 'it only hurts when he goes' bit... wow. I just adore this musical, it can really sum up little moments in life.
On a totally unrelated note... Aaron Tveit has rather wonderful abs... (Y)
I actually really like the interlude before the hardcore "It only hurts when I breathe."
ok, i saw this in broadway at christmas...watching this...i never noticed aaron had his top off!!!!!!!! haha
i saw this on bway last night. it is def one of the best shows ve seen. so powerful and moving! see it!
hopefully seeing this in january...i am sooooooooooo excited!
It's okay, Aaron, I didn't need my ovaries anyway...
@NYBroadwayelphie Brian D'Arcy James. Left the show prior to Broadway to play the lead in Shrek, and recently came back to replace J. Robert Spencer on Broadway.
I love this musical
I've only ever heard the original soundtrack release, I didn't realise how many words had been changed.
i love this version :)
i can't get this song out of my head
Wow. Jen has improved so much. She's pretty fierce here but now she's amazing...
@theatrefan1991 This is in fact the earliest version of the show that appeared on stage - Off Broadway. There were a few earlier versions showcased in workshops.
I don't think it matters if copy right infringement is intended or accidental, it still is what it is.
ahahahaaa this is like one of the biggest shows now.
I like how they changed the lyrics on the broadway version to "what doesn't kill me, doesn't kill me" because, well...cliches are cliches, and it seems more powerful that way. Focus on the fact that you're alive. Not everything makes you stronger. Sometimes just getting through things is enough.
AND HOLY SHIT to Aaron's body!!!
I HAVE TO SEE THIS!
this song improved so much now
I saw this at 5th Avenue last night in Seattle as well as a previous comment. it was fabulous
seing this june 21 in philly on tour yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
AARON. IN SHORTS. AND NOTHING ELSE
i just died. twice.
aaron is SMOKIN
@maddygoboom Because this was from off-broadway and I'm assuming they made changes before they moved to broadway and recorded the soundtrack
@cheergurl1017 technically its when equity actors are used that recording is not allowed, not only when its on broadway. either way, jsut wanted to make sure everyone knew lol
JENNIFER IS SO PERFECT AMAZING OH MY GOD
Alice Ripley=Genius
*looks at Arron Tveit* I love Broadway
I found out about this musical the DAY BEFORE IT CLOSED :P
Yes.
Ohhh Aaron...so gorgeous.
@ilovestarkid1 I couldn't agree more. A shirtless Aaron Tveit is a joy to behold, but the harmonies are incredible. My local theatre house is putting on Next to Normal with several former Broadway performers and the harmonies fails in comparison to the original.
Thank you so so so much! Aaron shirtless. That's all I have to say! :)
@TheLunafilms: Hi, this is the off broadway version. When they went broadway, certain things change. for example, aaron has more clothes on, and the lyrics are a little changed.
Jennifer Damiano is awesome.
@BwayBoundChristian oh yeah. That's one of the places where the real brilliance of this show comes out! :-)
mmmmmh aaron tveit, i love you
@rev4n That's not fair. Next to Normal will never make it around portugal, certainly never Ripley and Tveit, and I can't afford the thousands of euros it would cost me to pop to new York just to see this play.
This play is a beautiful things whose voice speaks so closely to many, me included and if not for people occasionally videotaping it, my heart would probably break of knowing I'll never watch it in person.
If they ever came around here I'd be the first to cough up the dough
he is. he is an hallucination of diana and at the very end of the musical, his father.
aaron tveit yes please
i wish they hadn't cut the bulk of natalie's verse in the broadway version.
@maddygoboom actually, this was pretty close to what it is now... it is different on the soundtrack because they actually cut out of a lot of lyrics on the soundtrack from the show if you see it (though some of the singing lyrics are actually different here, most of the talking parts that are NOT on the soundtrack are the same)
totally agree :D
flowers for algernon IS like duh. i read it in the seventh grade!
1:32 - ...do I really need to say anything?!? Aaron Tveit = AWESOME!!
AARON =
Anyone think it's amusing that the most liked comment is about Aaron when this show is about Alice's character? Just noticing. And d'Arcy isn't bad either you know!
I can't watch this with out tearing up. I do think the newer version is better.
@FloopySocks
You and everyone else who has watched this. The best part about it is that he's a somewhat well kept secret. We don't have to share him with Holloywood (amen).
well, he has been on Gossip Girl, and he is going back 2 do more. Also, he was in Ghost town, with a small role in the hospital (funny right ?) and he almost was on glee as Lea Michele;s BF, but decided to do this instead.... lol.
They changed up the lyrics a bit since this..interesting to see how it was originally! :)
I kind of miss Diana making sandwiches on the floor.
she still did in broadway
@@gracejennings9034 she didn’t in this video. That’s what I had meant.
I saw Gabe again after he left and I thought 'darn, he got dressed...'
@swannavon ;) Well I do like Aaron very much, but the show basically does evolve around Diana.
Not really, actually, but in a way, yes. Though I don't mind it at all...
Wow, that was really interesting to see. I'm from Australia and we havent had this show come here yet...probably wont for another 4/5years (we only just got Jersey Boys), but I've been listening to the N2N cd for ages and have tried to figure out how they'd stage it...and now to know, its very interesting and well thought of.
I know this is the off-Broadway version...but just a question, were the lyrics different in the Broadyway version? As in, were they the same as on the recording?
True, but even being on Gossip Girl I think that he's better known as Trip Van Der Bilt rather than Aaron Tveit. Thank goodness he decided to stick to Broadway instead of Glee. Not that I wouldn't have loved to see him every week, but I think that Cory is perfect for the part.
@Iamadramafreak34 The son's been dead for a little over the length of Natalie's life, who is 16 years old. So yes, he's dead.
NO AARON! DONT PUT CLOTHES ON! haha. i like the newer lyrics and ending for this song, but they performed this really well.
is there anymore other than the three songs? i will never have a chance to see this play...=[
Please! Can anyone write me down natalie´s part, i speak english but i can´t get the full lyrics! Please i need them :D Thanks!
i think there may be future Elphaba here *coughjennifercough*
Wow, the difference in the acting Alice does form here and the broadway version. Totally different here where it seems the wackiness is more hid while it almost underlies everything in the broadway version
@Journey2Ernie123 Some actors like to change up the lines. It keeps them in the song mentally and emotionally.
Arron what a body
they hdould have never changed this song
it was perect
who agrees?
-nose bleed-
Gabe says it all 0.0
Song is awesome tho!!!
aaron tveit came onstage and, oh, where did my clothes go?!
1:32 best part starts to happen ;)
he is, that's pretty much the whole point of the show. notice how the only one who acknowledges him is diana?
Love these changes but the end seemed better in the original
damn at 1:31..... *Drool*
How was Brian D'Arcy James in this and Shrek?! DAMN he is like in two places at once? shoot im jealous!
@whitetiefilms i'd have to say the dad. his story is so heartbreaking to me.
do you have the scene where natalie and henrie first meet??
I like the album version better, but this is still good.
@gerrybrim hold up but didnt this close? i dont live in NY so im just starting to get this whole lingo
@TRASHYgah THAT'S THE POINT DUDE!
damnit, aaron's ripped 83 but of course, this is always awesome
ok is it just me or dose Natalie sing a different part then what the CD is in the beginning of the song?
i had no idea Brian d'Arcy James was in this! did they recast right before it went to broadway or something? and i like the new lyrics sooooo much better. they flow more than these do but you can't beat this show!! its one of the best on broadway right now :D
I know you asked this 12 years ago. But to answer your question, yes, J Robert Spencer took the role of Dan for Broadway. Asa Somers (Dr Fine/Madden) was replaced by Louis Hobson.
Brian D’Arcy James did return as Dan after J Robert Spencer left.
Do you happen to have a video of "Light" from off-Broadway?
Aaron needs to marry me like right now.
@TRASHYgah That was the point exactly, but it's mildly funny. It's like someone says "Do I feel okay? I just killed five people and I've got blood all over my heads. Yeah, I feel great."
Hmm, the highest rated comments are about how hot Aaron Tveit is...as they should be!
Yeah.. neither did I..
didn't know fran drescher was in the audience....
