Put a zip tie on the end that does not have the clip. They can still get out if there is no bait in the trap. You can also use a zip tie to keep the bait in place. I use a can of Sardines in oil with hole punched in it wired to the bottom and then loose Chicken or fish. This keeps them there longer, but if left long enough the trap will be empty. I learned this the hard way. I threw the trap in and watched it aMost fill up. Like a dummy, I got greedy, when I came back in an hour, all were gone except four. Good buy for the money!
I love crabbing! Here in Oregon we use a very similar method but different species of crabs. You gained a subscriber here.
Make your own crab trap that you can cast out with your fishing rod
Step 1. Get a heap of old nylon fishing line about 50 meters and tangle it all up. The more the tangle the better. ( birds nest )
Step 2. Tie a pilchard or any type of fish in the centre of the tangled line.
Step 3. Tie a 2 ounce sinker in the line and cast out.
When the crab goes to eat the fish it will get caught up in the line and you simply wind your line in. I have used this method shown to me by an old timer fisherman and it really works

I've used the big and medium heaps for muddies but how do the little one go? Also bought those box kits with the floats but never seen tags or pen in them. A piece of milk bottle does the trick

Normally a week or two
I’ve used chicken carcass as bait and you can have muddies within an hour or two.

When you toss the traps in the water, is there much risk of it turning over as it goes down?
it might when your trap is thrown off balance.
If it does flip over you can easily flip it the correct way.
