Wow - thanks for the honesty and insights. I've (Carly!) been travelling Sumatra on and off for the last 15 years - and living here mostly full time (apart from that COVID hiccup!) for 8 years now. I had been quite hard on myself lately for becoming increasingly introverted and more and more unwilling to go out and interact with locals from time to time. It didn't really click for me why this was happening until we left Sumatra for the first time in 2 years for a quick trip to KL. And suddenly I felt MYSELF again because I was invisible. Nobody was looking at me, nobody was trying to talk to me, nobody wanted selfies with me. And hearing you talk about how Sumatran people (especially Batak) are more outgoing about this kind of thing just hit home that it's okay to be a bit burnt out from the extra attention - ESPECIALLY as an introvert who really does not like to be perceived even in the best of moods. As you say, the people are so friendly and social and lovely - and there's nothing bad about their approach, but it can be a bit exhausting when you just want to go to the shop to grab something and end up becoming an attraction yourself. This makes me feel a little bit better for feeling a little more hermit-like lately! Bujur melala.
