  • Bangladeshi born, but British raised artist, Rana Begum, is best known for her minimalist, abstract sculpture. Whether it is her delicate wire structures or large-scale public installation, all her work explores the principles of light, colour and form. Rana’s command of this trinity allows her to create art that changes each time you see it.

She is fantastic. All of the things look like they could be basic etsy crafty stuff but the tricks using color and positioning make it fascinating and like it's living.

I bet that the worksite reflector installation piece is much more visually-impressive for viewers in person than those who see it on video. I suspect that this video doesn't do it justice.

It’s fascinating how the “talking heads” describe her work as though she’d made a profound discovery.
Most, not all, conceptual art is pure BS and this is no exception.
Just some well educated art historians and English literature majors describing to the naked king that his “clothes” look fabuloso.
    The “king has no clothes.”

"because of the way the space is used..." or she could have researched proper materials to keep her work in one piece for the duration. To me this is lazy art. Concept alone is not all it is or should be. Some integrity, craftsmanship, have respect for the viewer.

I suppose she and other Artist like her have a means the money to produce these mass scale projects - placing mass scale elements in out of context places to creat a juxtaposition of unrelated environments - thus creating sensationalism - perhaps nothing of substance of or within the installation itself - I could paint what she has produced on canvas and would not get the same reaction, I don’t know - (forgive my rapid composition - it’s 4AM)

Installation art is a big thing for people who own buildings and large complexes and the ones you'll see are usually commissioned by them. It's a bit like a mini tourism event for the building and whatever person or organization owns it. Installations and art festivals are sort of like a modern day resume for artists. It's a bit weird and different now, definitely beyond the days of just gallery and salon owners. For me in my career I do more gallery appropriate pieces of course, but the handful of large pieces and installations that I was commissioned to do are what I'm most known for when it comes to photos and notability etc. They show an individual's style and view on a more dramatic scale and act like personal landmark or business card. The plus side for artists, even though most of these installations are temporary, is getting to be viewed and known by many people at once and that will almost always lead to additional private sales, exhibition opportunities, development and research grants, paid residences or teaching/lecturing engagements.
