    ... okay, I'll admit I didn't expect Giant Airship Game to provide quite so succinct an example of why we don't use Giant Airships.

      well we use giant ships, just in the ocean. In the game its a massive desert and so they use these ships. They are used as aircraft carriers missile carriers and attack ships just like irl but you know in the air.

      @@Snirby1629 It's a lot easier to put 10ktons in the ocean than 10ktons in the air. Without effective air defense (which this definitely doesn't demonstrate) a CAG will absolutely do the same thing to a fleet of maritime vessels in real life, but a maritime ship/carrier has the excuse of A: It's a lot cheaper to be big when you don't need to fly, and B: You can't just lay your stuff on the ground.
      And like... when airplanes can just rip through these airships many times their size and price without any apparent resistance, why bother? Especially, why make them able to fly, when it doesn't help? You'd be better off trying to figure out a way to keep them on the ground (whether 'Homeworld DOK style landcrawler' or 'what if we made a modular airfield'). Or at least something like the Akron, CL-1201 or the 747-AAC, where you're not... purely relying on burning methane.

      @@basedeltazero714 the problem is size of the planet the game takes place on. Land carriers would literally take years to get anywhere. Those flying bricks make sense as mobile command centers and supply ships because they can fly that far. But without aircraft support they are easy targets and it seems humans in this world haven't figured that one out yet.

      @@basedeltazero714I think the problem in Great is that cities are thousands of kilometers apart with gigantic mountain ranges, so moving on land would be much much slower and much more dangerous as well. Liquid methane might be the only fuel available and they might use the energy of decompression in addition to the burning.
      Also from the fighting sequences as well as the landing minigame I feel like gravity is lower on Gerat than on earth. It's possible the planet is a gigantic sponge filled with liquefied gas trapped underground by a hard crust.

    3:20 airstrike where first group of planes baited ship into evasion, second group caught it with dead engines and blasted from behind while third group bombed another ship is just *chef kiss*.

    Airstrikes are a must have in any playthrough. İts shame that carries dont gain exp like other ships.
    Also try to send planes one by one instead of chunks. Because all planes will target only one enemy.
    There will be bombs and rockets fired to ships that died from previous bombs.
    İt is much more ammo efficient to send one by one.

    • @darykeng
      @darykeng Před 2 lety +6

      Watching one playthrough it seems planes will attack the same ship anyway, be it groups by one 1 or 2 or 3 or whatever
      Edit: Huh, even in this video groups of 3 sometimes attack different targets. I wonder if it depends if AI thinks it can finish off targets by a single attack group or not

    The effectiveness of airstrikes makes the entire setting look a bit silly. Why usr gian methane guzzling metal buckets when a few relatively small planess can do the same, but better?

      You also have to think about the shattered empire’s worth of people being trucked around on the giant ships, along with supplies, ammo, fuel, and weapons. It’s the only reasonable option to carry as much as they do.
