When I really didn't want to take a chance breaking a tile when drilling, I would make a small donut out of modeling clay and press it onto the tile around the hole and fill it with water, then drill at a slow speed. A little extra work maybe, but it never failed me.
It is the heat and impact that breaks them.

When you drill a tile just turn off the hammer function on the drill and use a piece of masking tape on the spot and you can do the drilling with an ordinary concrete drill.

@@junangeles what was fortunate for me was that I wasn't drilling a tile that was in some sort of wall or anything, so I just switched to a brick material one and used the fast setting on a corded drill in a drill press going very slowly from small to big drill. Otherwise the drill will go red hot and the tile might crack. I put a perfectly level wooden board to drill into underneath because otherwise it would crack as well. After like 3 or 4 broken ones I finally had it down and could do one hole in like an hour or so.

Well I have drilled tiles a lot and what works for me is take the drill off hammer action with a bradawl tap gently and score a mark on the tile so the bit doesn’t slip.drill through the tile off hammer when you get through the tile put in on hammer action and drill into the wall. When you place the plug in the hole make sure the plug is passed the tile or you will burst the tile.

According to my experience, yes you can go with impact and do what you need to do fast and effective, if the tile guy has done quality job tile wont brake. But impact hole has guite extensive edges, sometimes you need perfect edges and cant take risk that tile guy has put one tile shitty. So there are to ways todeal with it.. for diys, few holes take universal drillbit lightly larger than a hole you are going to drill, tap it lightly with an hammer while turning it on the tile to get rid of the glaze, take ceramic, glass or a masonry drill bit and drill hole on low turns. For advanced amateurs:buy normal quality drill bits for ceramic, puncturemark hole with an old drillbit and drill on low speed, dont forget to cool bit with water and charge more for installation as you are burning trough drillbits. Remeber, you allmost never drill on the ideal circumstances on the floor between two tiles, you drill on the wall on the edge of the tile

For over 30 years I have been drilling holes in the tiles according to illustration no. 3, i.e. with SDS drills with impact. So far, I have broken about 2 tiles out of 1000. I am a trained gas-water-heating installer. Tile layers also drill with impact and SDS drill bits. These special drills make it easier than with SDS. But this way with the broken tiles is not right, it only happens to laymen.

I have NEVER seen anyone try and drill any kind of tile with either an SDS action nor a Percussion action engaged! Think about it, if you hit a tile with a hammer, is it going to bend or crack? Just stick a piece of masking tape on the tile where you want to drill, to stop the drill from skipping/wandering, and drill with an ordinary masonry drill with no impact shenanigans.
