Hey, Mark! I started watching your videos a long time ago. I've learned so much from you. I drew this dragon and the dragon head that you drew for a class project and everyone was in awe! I made almost exact replicas of the ones you drew. I am going to try to get into an Art Institute for college. You have inspired me to start with art. Thank you, Mark. Keep up the good work!

This was the first video of Mark Crilley i ever watched. I was in 7th grade, and i was mesmerized. Watching this video really helped me because it made me reason Mark is both an amazing teacher, and also really funny. I've grown so much from him. I went from drawing stick figures with scoliosis, so being entered into a region wiide Art show for highschools as a freshman. ( the only one from my school, and 1 of 6 in the entire show.) I'm not meaning to brag i'm just posting this to show my appreciation, and to show those who are watching this video as a first as well. Thanks Mark!

the shape of the body is pretty cool the grounded limb are nice too though the hind legs are a bit off (best way to improve those is to draw bulls, horses and pitbulls because they have some nice muscles there) the hind legs should also have talons even though he is not a wyvern and thus it is not mandatory I think he would appreciate to have those to grab preys he piques at I mean on an evolutionary point of view of course, that would clearly be an advantage.
Also I don't know much on wings but their general shape, and I know there is very few shape of wings and that they are inherent to a method of flight so I doubt it is wise on a design standpoint to innovate on wings unless you really part from any realism in the matter which is not what your style seems to be telling about your art.
What I meant is wrong about those wings is that it is let's say some natural consensus that the middle finger is the longest, a matter of balance I suppose, It is also the case for birds and bats.
The head, I don't like it but dragon head can be virtually anything so whatever, I usually prefer a more crocodile like shape, that I believe is more realist than the stocky browed jurassic-like head that is often preferred in fantasy.
As for the base of the tail and hips area, your drawing make it looks like you don't understand how the volume in this part of his body works, you should make his lower belly and base of the tail bigger so that there is enough room for those hind legs to actually be there. you should also put a cloaca on the base of the tail because without it, the tail looks to much like just a part of the belly and on face view it's just flatly round while a cloaca would give him a fiercer dinosaur look.
But there is one thing that made me cringe during all the video, (you draw extremely slowly and) your line is... er.. I mean it is not pretty, You are using a pencil, you can make beautiful line effects just by playing with the slope and pressure sensitivity, but all you do is going back over your line times and times with heavy stroke and make it bland and uninteresting.
But you draw very well, the stylization is nice and interesting and the front legs and shoulder area are gorgeous!

Well, there is currently a discussion on dragon wings. Many people say that the wings are similar to the bats, with a joints that fold on top of eachother. But the joints will snap when holding the dragon's weight in the air because the design of the bat's wing is only designed for small weight. A dragon shouldn't have joints on the wings like a bird (Yes a bird does not have joints on the wings BECAUSE. . . I don't know.) and the bird only has shoulder joints on the wings. But then, a dragon would have knocked its wings off if is was disjointed due to various dragong behavior. But, it's up to you Mark

Your art teacher seems like someone that judges by your past sketches or doesn't believe in improvement, so if he or she noticed a drawing you previously did and messed up on, he or she will probably think you can't improve! My recommendation is to sketch something in front of he or she to prove that you have improved! But that's just what I think, you don't have to. Me I'm just starting to learn how to draw a dragon but I have been drawing my whole life! (Which I admit is only like thirteen years!) And people still think I trace! Sorry for making you read all that!

dragons have a big connection to japanese culture, if you watched enough videos (mainly begin japanology), you notice that there are dragon ornaments on some of japan's older buildings, that's because dragons are the water spirit (irony) in their culture and having a dragon ornament on your building is believed to protect it from floods (since japan is not short on those).

I also agree on that fin-like thing on the side of the head is that (my basis are a few dragons in Monster Hunter Games) is that it's supposed to make the dragon look much larger to scare prey.

I never intend to upset anyone, I love your videos, I'm a good drawer but I always can learn as everyone on earth. Your details on this drawing is stunning and very well done, but (I know every opinions are subjective and different) the dragon's design is very simple… No special position, the wings are very small, the legs and arms are not very well proportioned to the body and the feet are somewhat… childish… the head is nice, but looks like a chicken with horns. However, the muscular look on the side is really well done, the tail tip is nice too and I love the back ground ! Anyway, I hope you take my critic and improve, as we should all do (I guess you don't do a lot of dragons so it's normal to begin somewhere !)

Are the wings both leaning to the center top of the dragon? Just asking because usually on wings like bat, dragons, gargoyles etc, I see the edge outter spine being the longest. Would just want some definition, would really help me put. Thanks a lot.

Just a tip, the legs should not be on the same plane, because as far as I can tell, dragons do not stand with their feet together. The foot on the far side should be slightly above the nearest, for some perspective.

Great instruction, however dragons have been a part of folklore for thousands of years. There are two main types: The European Dragon and the Asian Dragon-- a large part in both Chinese and Japanese Cultures. The symbolism behind the dragon also changes with Culture/location. For Example I will use Disney movies to illustrate my point. A Chinese dragon would be Mushu from "Mulan"- a guardian and symbol of luck-also symbolises Power. A European Dragon would be Maleficint from Sleeping Beauty-- or better yet from J.R.R. Tolkien, Smaug- a symbol most often used for Greed and Tyrany.... I could also go to Beowulf for an Epic Euopean example-- or King Arthur--European text NOT DISNEY--- I was A literature major and as an artist I can not avoid their influences and symbolic meanings. Never the less, great instruction!!!

I've been drawing dragons for years - and like you said they're fantasy and you can do them however you want. I just want to point out since you do make a deal about realistic anatomy that you made one mistake (only assuming this matters to you. If it doesn't then feel free to disregard - again, they ARE fantasy creatures) - when you went from the hind-legs into the tail, you didn't really give him hips. You just had the back slope into the legs. In the future, if you're going for supreme anatomy, you'll want to draw bumps at the top of the back above where you draw the legs to show the muscles and the rotation of the hips at the top.
