      It’s not the same as it was back when the show was made. When the show came out, Toronto had an obscene amount of character and diversity, not to mention a thriving artistic community, city planning committee and architectural preservation culture. It has now become extremely gentrified, sterile and awash with new, cheap, Chinese-backed “paper” condos.
      The difference between 30 years ago and now for Toronto is night and day.

    I'm American but I I lived in a suburb of Detroit for 3 years. If I adjusted the rabbit-ear antenna on top of my TV to the right angle, I could pick up the CBC-TV station from across the river in Windsor, ON clearly. I stumbled across this show one evening and I was hooked. I didn't care that it was terminally hammy, overheated, and overacted. There was something about it that made it compulsively watchable. Maybe it was the Canadian setting - very much like the States and yet different enough to be interesting. Maybe because it was filmed entirely in Toronto; you know, "New York as run by the Swiss." I loved it when Leon ran for mayor. It's a shame that it has vanished into the CBC archives, apparently for good.

    3 seconds into this CZcams clip and I was suddenly awash with the feelings of my childhood. My mother was a paralegal on Bay Street at a top firm up until 1993, and she would watch this show religiously. I was later told that it actually pretty accurately portrayed the “dramatic and overzealous” law culture of the late 80’s/early 90’s in Toronto, albeit without the mob ties and the heavy cocaine-use.
    What brings this home for me the most is the feeling that everything was stable in the city back then. No notions of racism, no major opioid overuse, no mass-gentrification, no decommissioned historical buildings-turned-condos, no pandemic and no social tyranny.
    We had it so good then, and we didn’t even know it.

      Agreed. The re-boot was fabulous. I hope that it's shopped to other networks and/or Netflix. It's too good to end.

    Canada's answer to L.A. Law. Even the theme begins with a horn note. I'd change the title from Street Legal to something more appropriate, such as Canadians in Crisis.

    • @jferkfjkj
      @jferkfjkj Před 8 lety

      There's just an amateurish feel to the way these actors portray their characters. They're either plastic and robotic or overacting.

    • @ellamarie2258
      @ellamarie2258 Před 8 lety +1

      jferkfjkj Yes, that part is true, but i notice that in MOST acting , even like some huge hollywood movies and actors...its fake and plastic all across the board. And any shows that have to do with rich people, law or "soap' style shows, like melrose, street legal, 90210, soap's, sit-coms etc etc, they are all pilfered with terrible acting. These shows like street legal and the above mentioned shows the writers struggle to come up with story lines and keep things interesting for the viewers, so they add all these stupid little dramas and then the acting becomes really stupid and they think that The viewers cannot see through that. Its so annoying. One of the worst shows was "Heartland" the first few seasons were fantastic....but the decline of the show was sad as the relationships that developed within the characters declined and the conversations got worse and worse. So stupid. But you are right, I'm glad you see this too. I rarely watch tv for that reason and movies too., some older style movies have much better written story lines, that are actually believable and i can appreciate those more. Thanks again, have a great day.
