My Messy Homeschool Room Tour (Small Space Homeschooling Reality Check)

  • Ok let's be honest: homeschool room tours are kind of like a horror show you just can't pull your eyes away from. I mean, the organization, the Ikea bins, the chalkboards, the bookshelves! Everything arranged in glorious cubicle-like perfection, I both hate my room and want to vomit at the same time.
    I do not have the luxury of a large space for homeschooling that can fit everything I need. I am a homeschool mom of five kids, that's 5. I work nearly full-time, I have pets, I have friends (not sure why I partnered those with pets, but you know, they need care and attention too!), I have a life outside of homeschooling. So pretty much, my homeschool room suffers... every day.
    Come take a peek inside my homeschool room with all the mess, the hair on the floor, the random bits of supplies, the empty bag of chips (wait, what?) and let's talk about real life homeschooling. And seriously, if someone with an immaculate homeschool room wants to come over to my house and have an interview with me, I have some questions for you ;)
    If you like what you see, hit subscribe, new videos are coming... when I can. I also have a podcast, a huge Facebook page, a blog I'm pretty attached to, and a book I wrote about organization and planning (ironic, no?). Links are below.

    I love the honesty of your video. In experience teaching I have had a public school classroom, a Montessori preschool in our basement and now I am homeschooling my two young boys. I would always strive to keep a picture perfect classroom and I'm very good at organizing, BUT it takes energy and space to keep a classroom spotless. Since I started homeschooling, my boys and I no longer work to keep the classroom immaculate. This is a struggle for me because I don't like the mess. If you have the space and organization systems in place it's a matter of disciplining yourself to not leave the classroom until the kids have put things away. If you don't have space or a system in place this is a big challenge and requires time and creativity. Two tips for those challenges: 1. Create a "don't belong bin." Like a kitchen garbage it keeps things collected that you are not using in your school/office space. This helps prevent all vertical surfaces from becoming a catch-all. You (or the kids) will need to return items to the places they belong to when it is full. 2. Consider your current 'system' and ask yourself what bugs you the most? Kids loosing books, not having enough storage? Work on that ONE thing and make a system for it. Do research on-line to get ideas to solve your problem. For example, if it is loosing books, each kid could have a basket with their books so they can take them to work anywhere in the house. Make an inventory of the books and put it in the basket. Kids could return the basket to the school room when they are done. Plan on committing 2-3 weeks teaching and reinforcing whatever system you put in place. Make the new routine fun, occasionally put treats in the baskets for the kids who remembered to put them away and have a complete inventory of their books. Best of luck!!!

    I am so glad to know that my kids are not the only ones to get into stuff that was not theirs and use it for their own purposes. Thank you for showing us your own struggles. Homeschooling does not always look perfect.

    Love how real this is! Great schooling can't be determined by an immaculate environment! In fact, I wouldn't trust that you're kids are getting an education if your environment was immaculate. This just shows that your putting your energy into your kids, you're doing great! Homeschool on!

    I homeschool two five year old girls. They each have their own plastic workbox which holds, workbooks, pencils, a ruler, and scissors. They are responsible to pull out their work boxes each day and at the end of the day I remind them to put their work box into it’s place each day. When we leave our little schoolroom it looks as good as when we entered that morning, and sometimes even better. I remind them of how special our school work is and they seem pleased to keep it pick d up. “A place for everything and everything in it’s place”. It works for us.

    1) Hold the kiddos accountable everyday for their mess. Their material is their responsibility! 2) I also have a rule in regards to my shelf and my desk; what is in and on them, it’s mine! Mine only! 3) If you don’t use it, you don’t need it. I’m sure other families will be happy to get your old books that you don’t use anymore. Those things can be super expensive! 4) Treat your HR as your kitchen sink. If you don’t clean a little everyday, the mess will pile up. 5) lastly, see what it works for you! I don’t work well if it’s messy, so that is why I keep it organized. If you work well the way you do things, GREAT too! No shame in your game! Do you!

    • @juliea4365
      @juliea4365 Před 5 lety +2

      yes!!! ^ What she said! Our homeschool and also craft room room is a large closet. Not kidding. And as a school room, its tiny. Smaller than yours. Chaos and mess stresses me out but my kids create chaos everywhere they go and everything they touch just melts into a mess. So for me, I make sure that I take some time each week to re-organize our little room. Once every 3-6 months I go through our school stuff and throw away what we haven't been using. IF it is something I know we will for fact use in the future (maybe next year we will be discovering planets but in the next 6 months that isn't in the plan) then it goes in a bin that goes to the garage. I never collect curriculum that my kids may need more than 1 year from now. Basically what I am trying to say is you kept saying "stuff" ...which tells me you just have clutter. Sell it, donate it, have a youtube giveaway party! Designate each child to their own shelf if you can. And give them the responsibility to keep their shelf organized. Create a consquence so if they do not keep it clean then they know their consequence. Or appoint a time each week to be "clean room day" ...maybe that is the first 10 minutes of Monday morning they have a chance to organize and be ready for the week. Or even Friday so it will be clean and ready to go by Monday. By the way, I am not saying your kids aren't disciplined, just saying give them that responsibility. Anything that is on your table, is YOURS. So if they put something of theirs on there, it's yours to do with what you please. IF they take something off YOUR table without permission (such as the scrap book paper) it comes out of their allowance. Again this teaches responsibility and discipline. Make sure they know that those are the rules. If my kids want to craft in there, they know they have to pick up their mess and put things back where they belong otherwise they will get a consequence. I hope this helps!

    Thanks for being real! It makes me feel better about my mess. I am also a second generation homeschooler and my mom was the queen of clean! One thing she hated was having too much stuff and she cleaned every nook and cranny every weekend. I resented all the time spent cleaning but came to appreciate the feeling of having things neat for Sunday and the new start of a week. Now as a Mom of 5, 7 and under (baby is 2 months and the twins are 3) I struggle with what is a healthy balance between clean and messy. My sanity can’t take messy but my husband doesn’t like my barking orders at the children when trying to get them to clean up. One thing that helps is having enclosed cabinets. We have an old entertainment center in the living room with shelves that I put the printer in and Rubbermaid drawers. A cart from IKEA that I roll into the entry way closet and a cabinet in my dining room. One thing an aunt who homeschooled with a large family encouraged me to do was pay a cleaning lady once a month or oftener if needed and count it as school expense. I’m not sure how you ladies that vlog and have side businesses do it! I would love to have the time for a side business but even commenting on something, I have kids in my face and fighting to sit beside me!

    Great idea with the individual bins!!!
    What I would change is do a BASKET (like on your table) for each kid...then they CAN overflow...can hold different things than books...like if one child REALLY IS using yarn. Lol.
    Clean-up time each kid can throw their stuff into appropriate basket...might be school stuff or other stuff...but at least each kid can know THEIR stuff is in their own basket....
    I think that would help.
    ...another shelf to hold them all...
    ...or even hooks if the baskets could have handles...

    Also, I have had several organizational aha moment after watching organizational videos by clutterbug here on CZcams. She was a former-messy-person-turned-organization-expert, who works with people that traditional organizing doesn't work for. In the course of her business, she discovered that people have different needs regarding how detailed and how visual they need a system to be in order to work for them. Kind of like organizational "personalities"--- now that I understand more about how my brain works (I'm a bee) I have several systems that work, and have worked long term. (they aren't as pretty- but they actually function). And I actually recognize why my past tries failed.... It's slow getting stuff switched over, but it had given me hope and confidence, and helped me prioritize my excited-to-do-something-spontaneous self over trying to have a magazine worthy home.... Because let's face it, that's not happening lol

Smearing bright red paint all over my livingroom carpet....I put a padlock on the homeschool cabinet that day 😂

    Finally a REAL HOMESCHOOL room, mom, mess, etc!!!!!! I’m new at homeschooling n after watching many many amazing homeschool rooms I felt like such a failure!!! I’m low income single parent trying homeschool 4 kids I couldn’t afford all these amazing homeschool shelf’s, desks, storage, books, curriculums, activities, supplies n so on so I thought after jus few months of trying to homeschool how do I put these kids of mine bac in public school I hate to do it, my kids cried n begged me not to so ty for this video U hav helped to realize I dnt need all that stuff to homeschool!!! I jus need to teach my kids however I can!!!!
    As far as those amazing homeschool parents w all that amazing homeschool stuff why homeschool at all if ur going to run ur homeschool like a military/public school the only difference is lack of kids!!!!
    I watched one homeschool mom of 4 kids ages 1, 4, 6, n 9 and wow the schedule n work she showed for those babies literally shocked n tired me out jus looking at it all n I’m 36 think of those kids seriously like each subject she has them doing at least 5 or more worksheets plus activities for each subject from 7:30-4pm w a 45min lunch break n 45min outside time during all that time n school work!!! And the work wasn’t just simple easy work not at all it was detailed lots writing plus thinking n etc!! I’m still shocked
    Every homeschool parent is diff n that’s great but it’s ridiculous in my opinion to hav ur child at that age doing so much work!!!!

    Thank you for this video! So relatable!! Our homeschool "room" is the little 9x9 storage space that we share with the hot water heater (It's literally a utility room, but it's the only extra space in our little 1980's 3/2 ranch. I'm claiming it as a room because there's a tiny window, and I painted it haha). It can be so discouraging to see the perfect homeschool rooms on Pinterest/CZcams (especially on mornings when I come into the schoolroom to find craft paper everywhere because my Kindergartener and 1st grader were using the room as their "lab to make dino DNA" the evening before)... BUT, having been a homeschooler myself during the 90s, when NOBODY was homeschooled, I have to remind myself that the homeschool rooms back then- if you even had one- were often just 2nd hand bookcases jammed full of books, an old comfy couch/chair for reading, and an assortment of random containers that definitely did not match to hold all the supplies. Most of our school happened at the kitchen table or on the floor of the living room, and we learned all the same!

  • @jaydensibs7015
    @jaydensibs7015 Před 5 lety +2

    Wow! I love this so much! Our "school room" is our dining room. So, below the books and papers spread out on the table after a hard day of school work, is eggs and toast left over from breakfast, that my 5th child (currently 10 months) will munch on during school time to keep him occupied. Thank you for being real.

  • @cherlinepierre
    @cherlinepierre Před 5 lety +7

    lol...😂🤣
    I did the KonMarie declutter method a few years ago and never went back to total clutter (a bit difficult and long process).
    I also ensure that I reassess all of our "stuff" and give away/trash unneeded items at least twice year from all areas of the home. This has become part of our deep deep cleaning/home maintenance routines twice a year. This certainly helps us stay clear of unintentional clutter and disorganization.
    When stuff comes into the home, stuff MUST go out. I am not buying more of anything to accommodate more stuff (homeschool too). Since we did the KonMarie method, we have always had an empty closet that is used for homeschool "stuff". We also have a daybed that has storage and is used for "all things art".
    To make life easier for me, we tidy up after each homeschool day (5 mins) and clean that area weekly (Sundays) and put things away in their appropriate places. Everything has a place even if that is in a neat pile somewhere, in a bin, on a shelf, in a basket, etc. Every person in our home has a role in our family in terms of their contributions. Home maintenance, regardless of how small the space may be, will be taken care of because a clean and tidy home gives us peace.
    To each it's own, but I have to be a bit organized with limited clutter to be productive.

    The potato chip bag....cracked me up. I thought wow, it happens to other people. My daughter has had an empty bag on her floor for days and as i go throigh i tell she needs to throw it away and the a few days later i see it again and say the same thing. The 3rd time i see it a few days later and finally she picks it up and throws it in the garbage in the kitchen. It was hiding also, behind something. But, one thing i like about your area is that the furniture is white and then the very dark wood something about it makes it clean looking. My walls are cream or mustard or any other country color from the 80's. We dont have curtains so we do have lots of light.

    We don’t have a room. We homeschool at our dining room table. We have a plastic version of your “planter” for our crayons, glue sticks, pencils, etc and each kid uses a Backpack to hold their personal curriculums. That’s how we stay organized as much as possible. Do we sometimes have stacks of books on the table in the corner? Yes. But I try to keep the table as cleared off as possible so we can use it for what it’s intended.

    No homeschool room here and my desk is a disaster area😝 but we make it work. I had a homeschool room in our last house and tried to make it look pretty and organized but it was stressful to do so. My kids wanted to play in there all the time and we're constantly making it a disaster area. Just working out of the dining room table and living room is our real homeschool life now. I'm less stressed and they are much happier when mama is less stressed. Thanks for sharing reality!

  • @rachellcenter3668
    @rachellcenter3668 Před 5 lety

    I have 7 children and a baby on the way. We live in a small home and our table is in the kitchen. I have very little wall space. We have just enough room for a big whiteboard behind the table, next to the file cabinet. We have two bookcases that hold our school curriculum. Our printer is in the spare bathroom - yep. There is not even a "nook" here. It's not ideal or what I "want" but it's what we have and we are blessed with a huge yard for the kids to go play outside. It really IS hard to stay organized with hyperactive kids with sensory and impulse issues, a special needs kiddo with autism, toddlers (also impulsive), and being outnumbered all week long because my husband works very long odd hours for his job. I do think more moms NEED to hear that they are NOT alone so you're doing a good thing here. An actual room or even small "area" devoted to our homeschooling would be GREAT.... but it really isn't what everyone has available and not everyone can stay as organized as the next person. We all do our best with what we have including the time and patience we have and including the number of kids, their ages, stages and needs (especially if we are talking special needs!), and let's please NOT forget budget. Some people get REALLY creative on a small budget but let's face it - not everyone is gifted to "find" furniture or organizational items that make things look all neat and tidy. Some of us would need to save and spend $ to make it all look (or actually be) organized. De-cluttering is another related issue to it but even if you de-clutter to the max you still have to figure out what kind of "system" you're going to set up for your kids and their books and materials and art supplies, etc... and it doesn't come easy for everyone. For all of you out there who have a homeschool room/area or like me make a tiny triple-use area work for homeschooling - keep working on it and making it work for your family and homeschool students. Seasons change and needs change and the free time you have to MAKE that happen changes. Do it when you can, how you can. Don't carry guilt over it.

    I have four kiddos and some have sensory needs which clash with each other so we fly by the seat of our pants most of the time. It's hard enough finding time for the absolute necessities.
    Thanks for the inspiration and being so real. I hope you and your family are well. X

    Is it me or did anyone else feel like she is tired of other homeschooling parents showing how perfect their “homeschool room/space” is and this was the sarcastic video for them?! 😂😂 Like.. give others who don’t have it all together a break because there’s no possible way to always have things together 😂😂.
    Either way, I am here for it all lol. I love your videos.
    I homeschool off of my dinning table and have a small space where I keep our curriculums and supplies. So I understand not having the room to store what you have. I can’t breathe in chaos or clutter so things have to be picked up afterwards but that doesn’t always happen either lol. I’m seriously learning how to just relax and be totally fine with an unorganized space for a day. No more than two days though lol.

    At 11:42 my 5 year old said, "wow, that's a mess!" Lol. Our school room is our dinning room and it's always a mess. I can't keep my dinning room table clear - it's got school stuff and food and all kinds of thing so it all the time. Oh well. Such is life.

    Sometimes I'm more motivated to organize and plan than I am to homeschool but I know I have to go with the priority and not just my desire.
    Our tiny homeschool room we use more as a storage closet (tho it used to be the nursery so its large enough for crib, changing table and rocking chair and book shelves) where we go and get stuff and take it out to the kitchen table. Our tiny homeschool room is an "enter at your own risk" zone. You will most likely not enter and exit unscathed. 🤣 😢

    Ha! Our "school table" is rarely clear enough for any of my kids to do school on because it is the dumping spot for all 5 of my kids! I want them to clear it but then I realize every space in my house is full so where would they put it. Ha. Need to declutter but it is hard. Most days I just want to sweep the whole table top into the trash ;)

    This is the video we all needed. We don't even have a HS room. But we sure have our messy spaces. And yes I agree the kids are constantly kidnapping my stuff and making it theirs and yes all in the name of them getting along and to have just one moment of quiet =)

    You are too cute. I love the realness. I am always trying to come up with another "organizing tip" that will finally keep my homeschool area together and neat. I haven't found it yet. I really need this as my homeschooling area is the dining room/den. This needs to be picked up by the close of the school day before dad gets home. I know my real problem - too much!! It is so hard to purge and I truly believe that I will get to the ____ very soon. I need help!!!

    I nominate you for some kind of award for showing real life!!! Your transparency and authenticity are refreshing and a relief for us normal human moms! I love your table and chalkboard! I don’t think it looks burnt, it looks great! I try to keep our school room organized but I usually come upstairs and go 😳😳😳 because all I can see on the floor are tons of toys scattered everywhere. Where I am stuck right now is the toy corner. It...is...a disaster 🤦🏻‍♀️. We aren’t ready to donate them because they use all of them but it is just too much!!!!

  • @tabithafletcher8617
    @tabithafletcher8617 Před 5 lety

    Wow! This makes me feel normal...thank you so much! Also, I don't have a homeschool room anymore. They were constant fails. We just went in there to grab our homeschool supplies and we would sit on the couch if we were reading or at the breakfast table if we were doing desk work. Now I have a deep shelved closet for workbooks and I store everything that we use daily-ish in kitchen cabinets near the breakfast table. P.S. It helped a lot, but my house is still a big mess and a daily struggle. But my 16 year old is in her 2nd year of college, so I did something right...just messy, too.

Thanks for helping me feel less insane.

    Best video EVER!! I am SO BLESSED to have come upon this today and really feel like God put it into my hands. I have spent SO much time trying to contact and question those perfect homeschool room people on Instagram to try and get the details and the scoop of how this actually works. I love that you put out an invitation for the same. So far, what I have learned is that you have to have a ton of storage space to store all the crazy and then spend a lot of time rotating and curating the environment. So far that has been unnatainable for me due to storage limitation and time limitation. I can either curate my environment perfectly (and be super cranky) or be present in the moment with my children - is what it seems. I have been trying so hard to strive for perfection due to the perfect instagram accounts I follow and was recently told by Denaye Barahona how toxic these accounts are. And I just feel like her advice and this video are gifts from God. Thank you!

    I tried the homeschool room thing in our old house. It was a decent sized bedroom and it started out looking great.... then we started school lol. Then I started using the dining room instead.... then we moved to a smaller house and now the living room is our area. The kids like working on the floor 🤷‍♀️They each have a bin beside the couch and the morning basket is there too. Maybe one day there will be a shelf for it. I actually like how minimalistic it is right now. It’s simple which is nice. I have a cart in the dining room that is kind of a hot mess, an “office” section in our dining room, all of our craft stuff sits in a pretty hutch, books on the shelf upstairs, and spare books that we aren’t using this year stored away in a bin. It’s not for everyone but it’s what works for me this month and it seems functional. Functionality comes before beauty here lol.

    Girl... I just want a homeschool room... I have school stuff everywhere. Trying to figure out how to just get it all in one place. Thanks for the motivation. Not gonna lie, though, I don't clean up after my homeschooler. He usually finishes while the little one is napping so school stays out till little one wakes up and then I say OK dude clean up and he does. But this is after years of training that mom doesn't clean up after you. 😂😂😂

    You’re cracking me up 😂😂 we go through 2-3 times a year and declutter our school stuff - I keep things we aren’t currently using in bins in the shed. Then every day after school we clean up the area. And every weekend I reset for the week, sharpen pencils etc. we basically only have a large ikea bookshelf that holds all our supplies and we just make it fit.

    I think a few people have an extreme talent for staying organized, just like any talent.
    The rest of us struggle through with varying degrees of success. There are always ways to learn how to improve to some extent, but we may never match those true pros.
    In the same way that I'll never be a professional athlete, I will also never be an extremely organized person. I will find the ways I can improve. That's the best any of us can do.

    hey girly dont feel bad my room looks a lot worse I get some good ideas from thoses other videos BUT.... dosent always translate. I too share my homeschool space it used to be what I would call my office/sewing room I do sewing type crafts and I just dont have the space that I want. I told my husband that when we move I will have my own little school room and a space for my machines so that I dont have to worry about my kids breaking them one of the 2 that I have is extremely expensive for us to replace so I dont allow my kids in this room unless I am in here and that is why that being said this room is still a disaster area and my boys still walk in and grab what they want until they figure out oh she wasn't kidding but then turn around and do it again.
