Today I'm heading away from the tourist areas in Bangkok to a little area called Bang Yi Khan in Thonburi, more commonly known by tourists as Pinklao. We're going to be checking out a really local
road that's full of cheap Thai street food.
Nai Han Tom Yum Noodles (traditional recipe) ก๋วยเตี๋ยวต้มยำนายฮัน (สูตรโบราณ) makes an unbelievable tom yum noodle soup plus maybe the best pork meatballs I've eaten in Bangkok.
I ended up stopping at a little stall selling jok (rice congee) as well as a specialty coffee shop and a reallt good boran moo ping stall.
I really want you to see how well Thai locals treat you when you're away from the tourist areas of Khaosan and the Sukhumvit Road.

THIS IS REAL BANGKOK STREET FOOD!
#bangkokmarket #thailand2024 #thaifood
About the area:
Bang Yi Khan dates back to Ayutthaya period since there are at least two temples with a history dating back to those times are Wat Bang Yi Khan, and Wat Phraya Siri Aiya Sawan.
In addition, there is also abandoned temple that have been built since the Ayutthaya period, namely Wat Suan Sawan, or locally known as Bot Rang ("abandoned sanctuary").
What makes Bang Yi khan the most well-known is the location of a liquor factory believed to have been established since the King Rama I's reign in early Rattanakosin period. Until during World War II this factory became under supervision of government and was named "Bang Yi Khan Liquor Factory".
Told that in those days, yeasts that the factory released into Chao Phraya River, attract toli shad (Tenualosa toli) to swim from the sea into freshwater to eat them as food.[2]
Currently, the liquor factory has been shut down and its location became a Rama VIII Memorial Park, a good atmosphere public park under the foot of Rama VIII Bridge.
The occupation of Bang Yi Khan residents in the past was the cultivation of rambutan and manufacture of lime for eating with betel and areca nut.
Pinklao is a popular name used to call this area (shares with Arun Amarin and Bang Bamru), this name after Phra Pinklao Bridge (usually shortened to Pinklao, or spelled Pin Klao), a bridge over Chao Phraya River and links Thonburi with Phra Nakhon sides, located in the area.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this CZcams channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!
Mate, I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now and they’ve always been great but you’re really hitting your stride this year in particular. Much more natural and confident and a good choice of guests. Keep it up!
Thanks mate, much appreciated ❤️🙏
Can’t wait - landing in Bangkok in 2 weeks - keep up the great work Gary
Have fun!
Ha Ha Ha, you eat congee/rice porridge just like me, topping it with all the condiments I love, just like I do with noodles! You are so Thai now 😅
/been a subscriber since you had just a thousand followers 😊
Thanks so much for sticking around. 😀
พูดไทยเก่งมากๆๆ บรรยายอาหารสุดยอด👏👏
Thanks for adding the captions Gary, it helps people learn Thai.
My pleasure 🙏
Those meatballs looked really good.👍
Unreal mate
Perfect timing for this release for me 😀. Was a pleasure to see you enjoying those dishes & now I need to prep some food of my own as watching has made me very hungry
What you got on the menu Roy mate?
I've just remembered that it's one traditional dish menu that you've never known and tasted before for sure, it's available here at Sri-Yan soi 1. This dish is called in Thai as "Yam nam kao tod" sold by P' Oar (her name) street food cart vendor located beside the road.
Please make sure that you check her selling schedule before you go because it is sold out within 2-3 hours. If you go to this area and have a good planning, you won't be disappointed.
Ah yes I know her! I’ll go and do a video 🙏
If you tell them you are going to film them to make a video for you tube, then Of course they are going to be super smiling and friendly 😅
Haha, they were friendly before that, that’s why I chose them for the video! 😅
สวัสดีมีความสุขนะครับ🎉🎉❤
🙏🙏🙏🙏
As you're the only one foreigner CZcamsr who have always tried and sought for delicious foods, especially in local area. In this Vlog, for example, Hor Mok (steamed fish with curry paste) which is available in local area that I'd suggest is at Sri-Yan. It's near Ratchawat area that you've been to in your past video.
This area, Sri-Yan has many delicious kind of foods and each street food vendor is close together you don't need to walk from each other. You can google the outstanding dishes in this area; you'll find that this area is the interesting place for foods and desserts like Talad Plu. Maybe, you can talk to your Thai friend CZcamsrs about this. Sometimes, I cannot tell all the associated story clearly due to my English problem.
Thanks so much, I’ll check it out 🙏🙏🙏
Moo Ping and Congee, what a wonderful breakfast.
The best!
Gary would love to see more Veggie/Vegan food please!
I’ll do my best!
❤ always so hard to see how the authentic versions are so different that what we get here is the USA.
Superb! ❤
Thanks 🤗
The Tom Yum looked good, and those pork meat balls were special for sure. As for the jhok (congee), what's the problem with having offal/tripe/intestines in there, would've been great.....used to be my regular breakfast dish when I was there. Got another ten minutes to go in the vlog, but I'll save that for tomorrow, along with the OTR history of rice, which I'm looking forward to. Thanks, again, Gary, and don't get too many farangs over there, it might spoil the vibe.
I’d had enough offal in the Tom yum for one day Willie 😅
@@theroamingcook Too much awful offal? 😜
Hi Gary. Love your videos and been to Thailand a number of occasions and I am back in Hua Hin and Bangkok in July. I am really keen to eat in the local style restaurants/ street vendors but struggle with the difficulty of the language especially when they only have a Thai language menu. Have you any suggestions on how to get around this? I have missed out on so many places I have wanted to eat at due to this
Take a guess
Hey Stephen. Google translate works ok now and a lot of people speak English here now, more than you’d expect. I’d say watch as much CZcams as possible so you know the look of the dishes then point if all else fails mate!
I suggest you to visit Hadyai. I like Dim-Sum , Bualoy, Chicken noodle(กรหมี่ไก่), Yentafo (เจ๊เล็กเย็นตาโฟ) and many restaurant different in Bangkok.
czcams.com/video/Jc7b0Lineko/video.htmlsi=hZS_XVbwBRym7JTs ❤️🇹🇭
Stomach, liver, pork meatballs... There was a fish mousse dish in the middle but not sure what it was :)
I ate only once at Khanson even visiting BKK more than 18 times after covid.
Thanks. I think tomyum best with shrimp or seafood.
Definitely!
Hi Gary, the Bai Yaw is Noni leave. The fruit smells somewhat Durian-ish. One must have a strong stomach to eat the ripen one.
The one with the fish cake is pig's heart.
Thank you!
แต่ละชามเห็นแล้วน้ำลายไหล หิวเลย 555

How does Gary the roaming chef not know what Thai joke is
What did I miss?
@@theroamingcook I was just messing with you Gary. The Thai breakfast made from rice porridge is called "joke" It has lots of ginger and scallions and little pork balls seasoned with white pepper and golden mountain seasoning.
Love your videos. Makes me miss Thailand every time I watch. And Adam from OTR is great too.
