    First of all Thank you Kalani so much for this video. Next, hopefully this will help other people: My experience has been than there is still sagging at the top after I was done following the instructions given here. The sagging was not as much as Kalani describes here but some. The reason is that there is not a concrete direction as to how much one should tighten the lugs. I followed Kalani's instructions and actually, I thought I was tightening it too much. Not enough I still had a bit of sagging. So, a couple of things: 1) I solved it by placing a damped towel on the top of the mounted conga head for around 6 hours to loosen up the skin. Then, when loose, I tighten it again to flatten it. Then I put a plastic bag on the floor and placed the conga upside down to dry. I did a 1/4 turn on it every 5 hours. That fixed the sagging issue. I will put a second comment explaining what is happening and a method to prevent it from initial skin installation in 50 mins or so as the US is about to play Iran on a World Cup Soccer (Fútbol) match and I don't want to miss it.

    I watched your video until the point of soaking the skin - I paused the video, soaked in my conga head - and then enjoyed watching the rest of your video :) Best advice I took from your video: Take the time that's needed, no rush no matter what gigs are coming. Playing a drum and maintaining it are indeed connected to each other. Now I gonna enjoy taking care of the drum shell. Thank you for all your dedicated time, greetings from the Netherlands

    If people live in PNW, Centralia Fur and Hide has a very nice supply of skins for all size drums. They also do online sales, but is is great to be able to go to the store and look and feel the heads, bring your drum and show the drum maker in residence there.

    Ok Part 2: So reading about it the explanation I saw was that the top part of the drum is drying faster than around the rim and that causes the sagging as explained by Kalani. The method to avoid this is to tighten it and place the drum upside down on top of a plastic bag. The bag slows the drying process of the top of the conga head. Still tighten the lugs 1/4 turn every 4 hours. The second drum I did with a thick skin (manitos' thick steer) I did that process and no sagging. Good luck to all who do this. It's an awesome thing to do.

    • @WORLDDRUMCLUB
      @WORLDDRUMCLUB  Před rokem

      Thanks for the tip and “plastic bag” suggestion. I always just tighten the head to make sure the head stays flat and don’t have a problem, but your way might be even “safer” when it comes to preventing the dip around the edge.

      Well, it was just like in your video until I actually started trying to get the hoop over the skin, then it all went wrong 😅 the skin was so thick that it just threw the clamps off every time. Luckily my son came home just as I was about to give up and an extra pair of hands saved the day. Super thick skin combined with a curved comfort-rim. Challenging, but we got it on.

      Paint would probably make the inside more reflective, which might add some ringing and overtones. It shouldn't cause any damage, but is not a common practice. I would also ask a conga maker.

    And now it’s time for Silly Songs with Larry, the part of the show where Larry comes out and sings a Silly Song. So without further ado, Silly Songs with Larry.
    The Water Buffalo Song!!!
    Everybody’s got a water buffalo
    Yours is fast but mine is slow
    Oh where do you get them?
    I don’t know, but
    Everybody’s got a water buffalo
    Oooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh
    I took my buffalo to the store
    He got his head stuck in the door
    Spilled some Lima beans on the floor
    Oh everybody’s got a water buff......
    Stop it!!! Stop!! Stop right this instant!!
    What do you think you’re doing?!?!?!?!?!?!
    You can’t say everybody has a water buffalo when everyone does NOT have a water buffalo!!! We are gonna get nasty letters saying, “Where’s MY water buffalo?!?!?!” “Why don’t I have a water buffalo?!?!?!” And are you prepared to deal with that?!?!??!?!?!?!!! I don’t think so!! Just stop!!! Being so!!!! SILLY!!!!!!!!!
    This has been Silly Songs with Larry. Tune in next time to hear Larry sing:
    Everybody’s got a baby kangaroo
    Yours is pink but mine is blue
    Hers was small but...
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!
    If you don’t know where this song came from, then you did NOT have a good childhood.

    WD40 tends to set up and polymerize, it has solvents in it which is why it can unfreeze frozen joints, side effect is it will set up over time (that;s why we *NEVER* use WD40 in locks) I would suggest that a pure heavy oil (manteca de corojo, coconut oil, or similar) might be a better choice... Obviously, if you've had success with this method, then it must not be too bad, but I am wary of anything as sticky as WD40 around a subtly moving part.

    • @WORLDDRUMCLUB
      @WORLDDRUMCLUB  Před 6 lety +1

      Great advice. That's why I only use WD40 for cleaning and not for long lasting lubrication purposes. Heavy oil or grease is the best choice for tuning nuts.

    Try using a cordless trimming shear to cut the hide. 1 minute cut, no worries. Cheap tool.

    You keep suggesting WD-40. Keep that stuff away from your drums. there is a lubricant in it but it will evaporate and leave a tacky, dirt attracting film that is not conducive to anything ever.
    Nice... I've got skins for my bongos that need replacing.
