Building a drystone well for off grid water

  • So we have a mill and a cabin with solar panels. But the water situation is not very good. I used to take drinking water from the creek but that was not great.
Then i found a spring that had much better water but it dried out in summer.
In this episode I will dig a drystone well. I will use the solar panels to pump the water to the cabin.
    ----------------
Lazy Creek is located in southern Sweden with no access by road. In January 2021 the forest was dense and just walking through it was difficult.
First step to get my cabin up there was to build a primitive shelter so that I could cook and rest.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=7B9FJ...
Second step was to set up a sawmill and get the tools in order so that I could make the building process more manageable.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfVtO...
Then we built the platform for this cabin.

    FAQ:
    What is that machine?
Its a mini forwarder called Oxen, made by Myrebäck Maskin in Sweden. I don’t have any contacts to the manufacturer as I got mine used. I’m sorry.
    What is that back hoe?
Its called Digger and is also Swedish made. It was built to dig on its own, but the previous owner mounted it to the Oxen.
    What is that dog?
Her name is Cake and she’s an amstaff-mix.
    What are you doing?
I am slowly making this place livable. Permanently livable.
    Baby steps.

That old backhoe is so science fiction/steampunk! It's like the metal equivalent of your cabin. The way you film yourself with it, I feel like it has a life of its own. I had to share this with the VanWives vloggers, two young Canadian women who, among other things, operate this sort of machine on their bush property. I'm sure they'll appreciate your ingenuity, videographic artistry, and sense of humour. I do. Thanks for the new video. I live alone in the bush and I like your decision to caption this. No illusion that we're all standing by watching. Just you, alone.

Having water to your off the grid cabin just about complete, wonderful. So much effort has been put into your cabin as do others and often just getting to a point where it is near liveable is really all one needs. I love the cabin & the site has extreme views aplenty especially in The Winter Wonderland. Perfect.

That's a lot of work and certainly a cool and productive well. Not sure I get the point of the tarp...is that supposed to be some kind of a filter for debris and dirt? Just an observation but plastic tarps are notorious for breaking down over time into micro fibers and it would get into your water system and filtration if it's going to be used for drinking purposes.

*Lots of "smart" people with no brains.*
It seems like the manufacturer of the Oxen had a good idea, but not the capacity to conduct. At some time under given bad circumstances a forest track loader "will" flip, and then it "must" be constructed so it can do so with no or minimal damage (like to the handle and delicate cylinders for operation). This total misbehave btw idea and performance is so entrenched in modern/commercial society and technology that it has become a depressing plague. I wonder if we in 50-100 yrs (or longer) will be able to find abandoned machines and tools, restore and continue to use them as we so often today can do with old "things" from the past?
That said, ofc there is a shelf life to everything, maybe except form stuff made out of rocks. Hence, with the extremely good build you did on this well I predict your great granddaughter in yr 3022 will have excellent potable water for her forest tea too. Remarkable good job Mr. Not-so-Lazy Creek (I've dug dirt, chopped trees and built my share of stuff myself, but what you're determined and able to do surpasses my wildest dreams,,, and now it's too late for me :hahaha).

Welcome back to CZcams, your presence and posts have been missed. You and Cake look well, has Keith survived being surrounded with decking? Getting a clean water source uphill of your cabin is an excellent addition to your sustainability. Is there a way to capture rainwater from your roof for a backup water reserve?
Using a coil of copper tubing and a surrounding fire you can create a thermal-siphon to heat water. “The Outsider” on his CZcams channel has posted a couple winter episodes using this process to heat water and thermal mass for winter camping. If you are looking for a solar solution to heating water, the “Life Uncontained” CZcams channel posted a video on their solar water heater at: czcams.com/video/-7_h3y01Jak/video.html Again, sincere thanks for sharing this insightful video of your journey.
