So far ive replaced coolant pipes + all coolant hoses + temp sensor, thermostat assembly, valve cover gasket, all plugs, cooling fan, entire CCV (breather) system, intake manifold gasket, both intake boots, engine mounts, control arm bushings, fuel filter, wipers, rear differential bushing, new battery, both belts, rear left wheel bearing, and new parking brake shoes, oil service, rear left window regulator, and removed the old tint
Awesome video! You made that diff bushing job look fairly easy. Car sounded smooth on the test ride as well this is going to make someone a really nice car that will last a long time. Appreciate the fact that you are wanting to fix those items before selling it 95% of people wouldn’t have fixed anything and try to pawn it off on someone else. Shows Good character

@@DayOffDIY absolutely I believe someone will! Anyone who has owned one of these and drove it after all the wear items have been replaced like this they know what a treat this car is ! I honestly don’t think you can buy anything this solid these days like they made these cars . As for the engine and trans proper maintenance and they just keep going as long as your willing to take car of it ! Like oil changes every 3-5k with good oil, trans fluid 30-40k . Diff fluid every 75k . It will outlast most anything .
This has been a great experience watching how far you've brought it. Knowledge, tools and a nice garage make a huge difference. Can't wait to see the oil filter housing video as well as the other videos that you are going to post. Great job DIY!

Project is coming along nicely. Top tip for working with torx head bolts. Always tap the end of the socket to make sure it’s fully seated to help avoid stripping the head. Especially important if you live in a salt state. The heads can fill up with grime/rust preventing proper engagement.

One other lil tip - working with those subframe bushings - i put a dab of air tool oil on the metal sleeves and they slide in like butter. Stuff is super slick I use it on so many things. Not sure if it would harm a bare rubber bushing or not.

I bought an E46 with a gnarly chunk under the car. Couldn't even tell if it was front or rear, felt like it was centered.
Turns out, P.O. had installed the new front struts on the wrong sides. With the left strut on the right side and vise versa, the sway bar end links were cranked beyond their intended range of motion, causing the sway bar to clunk over bumps. Swapped the struts and it was like a brand new car.
Just goes to show, could be anything.
Yet another great video and amazing work so far on getting this car up to snuff! Imagine if the next owner of this car looks back on your videos to do their repairs 😂

This diff bushing has been due for replacement on my ZHP for awhile now. Ugh, after watching this DIY I might just have to pay a shop to do it. That’s a lot of labor money 😢
It’s an expensive job at a shop… we used to charge 5-6 hours of labor at the shop… $150 an hour… it gets pricey.
hang exhaust, hand sway bar, REMOVE diff cover (plus you can replace gear oil) then you get access. I've done both of my E46's

Ah yes! Its throwing a code for torque converter performance, theres an internal seal inside the converter that wears out and allows pressure to bypass, when im driving at highway speed I can feel the trans slip and increase by about 300 rpm. It still drives and pulls fine, no real transmission slippage, but the RPMs do increase due to the seal. The only remedy is to replace the torque converter, or cut it open and replace the seal, which would have to be done in such a precise manner that It would be almost impossible for me without the machinery. So ill be replacing it with an Ebay converter soon, I have to fix the CEL or I wont be able to smog, and it keeps showing up after clearing the light
@@DayOffDIY thanks you for detailing the problem so well. I agree it would not be worth rebuilding it yourself, so much work and many things to go wrong. EBay seems the best option for it. On the plus side you will have an opportunity to film how to remove.
When you do film it could you please measure the minimum height the car need to be off the ground? It would help others know if they need a new jack or stands etc. 👍
@@PhantomZore exactly! ive seen em for as cheap as $115 so Ill get one comin this week. Technically i just need to get the trans out far enough to get the torque converter pulled.

When shifting gears in automatic transmissions, for example, when shifting from "D" to "R", my vehicle becomes very stiff. Is it related to the differential mount? good luck
Hey my car looks exactly like this but the rear wheels are locked. The car will attempt to move but is stuck like its trying to go over bricks. IDK what it can be? Any Help? Front wheels rotate freely. 2005 335i same mileage as yours thats crazy

@DayOffDIY I believe connector plug to transmission got wet, since it's so low on the car and the car went limp mode with transmission gear ⚙️ light on the dash and SES light. I used inpa to diagnose, found a bunch of transmission codes, cleared them let the car dry for a day now everything is good. But I still need to check how it got wet. I thought those plugs where water tight. But then it's a 20 year old car

It was easier to cut the rubber. and you could put the bolt through it.

sounds like you have a cracked/worn diff bushing. Id take a look with a flashlight and look for signs

Besides the clunk noise what would you feel at high speeds with these bad bushings ?
Differential bushings don’t really cause any drivability issues at high speeds in my opinion. Only while shifting from drive to reverse
That bush had some life left in it,it was not the source of clunk noise,the noise usually is from propeller engaging the differential and you have to live with it
That bushing was completely smoked, and it was the source of the clunk. I replaced it and it fixed the issue.

@@undergroundlegend198 are the secondary mounts in front of the differential still good? also have you checked trans mounts and center support bearing?
@@DayOffDIY infact i was checking them today and they are good but the propeller coupling to the diff has a slight play which i think is the cause of the clunk i will check again over the weekend, thanks for your concerns

How much would it be if you took it to a mechanic?
if i remember correctly, differential bushings were usually a 5 hour job or so, but we would also break the differential apart and replace the axle seals, diff cover, and fluid. plus the bushing and all the labor so itd get a little pricey. maybe $1000? depends on area and what shop

This bushing works for long not like on F10-1 series
The f10 diff bushing is a terrible design! I used to replace them as early as 40-50k miles on F bodies!

I’ve never done it by removing the cover! Maybe that’s because at the shop we always resealed the pumpkins while we did the bushing, axle seals, cover reseal, pinion seal…
I’ll have to try it that way on my other e46 :)
@@DayOffDIY You'll have to wedge a 5/8 socket to shift the diff to the left to access top most bolt head. I've really enjoyed the care and attention you take to do things thoroughly keep up the nice work bro
