Can you still use your phone without a service plan? Well, technically it's possible to send text & make voice calls without a service plan from the phone company, let me tell how that's possible.

Hi Chard, That good to know! I found out by accident when I was using my WIFI tablet, it rang with an incoming phone call. I didn't know till then that it was capable of phone calls.
I have a question, if I use my older android phone as a hotspot to my laptop, could I use it as a modem and do away with the separate internet company? I use Google Fi and looking at the unlimited plan.

Hey J Moore, yes you sure can use that phone for your internet connection and get rid of the internet company, if the Hotspot connection is reliable. I know people who are doing that & I did it for a month to experiment and had no major problem.

Well it sounds like you have to upgrade the phone itself not the software, since it doesn’t meet the requirement. Unless the app is not compatible on that device.

Here is the thing you can't send messages that goes through the phone company, you can only send messages through WhatsApp, Messenger, etc and any other apps that works over WiFi - Hope that helps

Without a plan and you can’t use the regular SMS Messaging service, you have to use something like WhatsApp or any other messenger that uses the Internet connection

Well, that's where you hit the limit of what you can do. The SMS service goes through the phone company that's mean you need a plan for that. But all other messaging service works through Wi-Fi.

Can you use then phone number you had disconnected? That's the question 🤔 that I need answered. I have a new phone but it is a new numbers and I have text messages that come through that I get monthly and I don't want to go to the trouble of calling and changing the number. I guess I could just go to my profile and change the number on each one, but I just thought of that while typing this message to you. You can still let me know if it can be done though. Thanks.

If disconnected - No. If you change your number you keep the messages, but you need to update your contacts
