- I guess someone wanted this.
Sorry for the poor footage and audio quality. These shots were taken as beauty shots for a tradeshow in Savannah to be shown next to the physical plane. I was not recording for sound so the sound is straight from the Fuji X-T4 and in order to get the full sound experience, "unusable" sections of the clips were used. This is REDs diesel engine on an Air Tractor 301. Two turbos and twelve cylinders really do make for a fun noise and great day of filming!

Thanks for just the engine and no music!!!
I can see this engine in a mini P-51 Mustang, what a machine that would be. Or any other v12 build.
this is what the scalewings sw51 should have in it
Thanks for the link … i did not know i wanted to hear it , until I saw the link. A great plan …. powerful.
That is one sweet installation. Thanks for getting out and giving us an idea of what she sounds like, you went all out for that.
Gives me goose bumps all over!! Beautiful!
When I first saw that black cowling approaching from a long distance I thought, hey that's a radial in front!
I believe the V-12 means something different, friend. Radial is another direction entirely. Thank you, have a nice day.

Radials you can hear them exactly 3 miles away taking off. They are loud
Beautiful
I may be wrong but these pilots seem to have a very fun job!
That has to be one of the coolest things I have seen. And I have flown in a turbine 602! I love it!!! They need to make a V6 turbo to put in Cessnas, Mooneys, and Bonazas and such.
There's the RED A05
A good sounding engine.
This is to replace the 100year old radials that are becoming increasingly expensive to maintain. Compared to the radials there is no comparison. Remains to be seen how it stacks up against a pt6 but I heard it’s only a little cheaper up front but the fuel savings are 1/3 that of a turbine pt6.
The people who fly that airplane say the cost per hour is just over half the cost of the PT6. Lower fuel costs, and much less maintenance.
Especially for places like Alaska, where some small-time cargo airlines are flying aircraft that were built during or before WWII.
Some aircraft like the DC-3/C-47 Skytrain are capable of being outfitted with PT6 turboprop engines, but as you said, gas-turbine powerplants are usually more expensive to operate.
That is so cool man.🤠
Let’s see it with the cowling off.
I'd love to see the numbers compared to a turbine (I'm assuming PT6). Up front purchase price, $ per hr, fuel burn per hr. What does an overhaul coast? How easy is it to maintain (X maint hrs to Y flt hrs.). How hard is it to get parts for it? Can any A&P work on it or do you have to send someone to special training?
Those are good questions. My gut says it'll be a little cheaper to maintain right now, with that cost coming down as RED increases their footprint in North America and beyond. In the interim, I suspect that Diesel shops local to an FBO may be able to become certified to work on these. They certainly aren't any more complex than, say, a Cummins ISX or a PACCAR 13.
@@theprojectproject01 I'm picturing a more affordable PC12 or similar with this engine. Economical regional flights
@@IronHideWildfire Huh. Now there's a thought.
@@IronHideWildfire They have since installed one in a DeHavilland Beaver, and BOY HOWDY does that thing look great.
What a beast!
Amazing.
Nice turbo spool sound just before the plane started to taxi on take off??
I started scratch building my diesel aircraft before 2000. Done for saftey affordability. flyeurodiesel goes great.
Wow that's a sound of a crop duster a fast one. :o)
I didn't expect this sound. I expected an underlying diesel like sound, similar to a big rig, or turbo charged locomotive LOL.
I like it
Like a Turboprop Power!
Paint it yellow 💛
My that is nice and quiet
Seria uma boa opção aqui para o Brasil, já que por aqui quase não se encontra mecânicos para os radiais, e para empresas pequenas um PT6 ainda é um passo muito grande e distante
Omg that is pure ear porn! Those turbos sound amazing and actually somewhat like the actual turbine engine (not near as loud of course and it’s a different pitch, especially at low speed and idle). I’d have to hear them in person to actually see, but certainly sounds closer to a small turbine than a piston. I fly a PC-12 about 30% of my flights and of course it’s different, but man that sounds cool. Wow!
What is actual engine RPM at idle and with takeoff power set? Thanks!
Is there an STC for that install or is it experimental ? An experimental aircraft can't charge for their work ??
Pretty quiet actually, well at least on video.
It's about as quiet as the 502XP it's the only model with a 4 blade propeller
Crop dusters are the most beautiful planes. The end.
what kind of load does it carry
How is this working out for them after a year?
American regs are trash and would have cost them too much to continue development in the states. They transferred the project to a company in Canada if I'm not mistaken.
Would be Nice to see a Coal roll
European diesels don't roll coal.
🤡
I refer to a "con trail"
Is this an STC?
STC for AirTractor and Beaver in progress.
That's awesome, but why? The purpose of these planes is to dust crops. Does a twin turbo V-12 help a plane do a better job dusting crops?
Because they can. Look up the price of the PW PT6 turbo prop engine. And they make more money per hour of operation, they do not fly for free.

@@willjohnson3907 That was my next question...How much cheaper is the V-12 compared to a PT-6 & the cost of operation, etc. I'm a round engine guy, love radials & WWII aircraft, but for sure they're expensive & troublesome the older they get.
@@crooked-halo This design is about as reliable as a pre-smog small block Chevy. It's almost like two I6s running a common crank.
No need for a reduction gear, super-flat torque curve, burns less fuel, burns *cheaper* fuel (though it is a bit heavier), and I've got to believe initial price is lower, too.
@@theprojectproject01 It does actually have a small reduction gearbox.
Sound like a KENWORTH.
What's the TBO on the v12 and the turbine?
TBO for the V12 is 2000 hours if I recall correctly
@@ozzypearson-leach4121 In a previous video it is 2000 hrs but they plan to go 3600 hrs. TBO is just a manufacture recommended time.
it literally sounds like a turbo diesel
Turbos really quiet that thing down
That engine is nice but it sounds like a turboprop engine due to a twin-turbo diesel engine.
There are times in the video it sounds like an electric fan. 🤣
It ain't no Merlin !
These planes are not even close to what an old Stearman sounds like with open headers.
I love the concept but really as far as "Pure V-12 Sound", it was only on the ground that it could be heard. Twin turbos would kill the sound of any amount of cylinders.
Beaver sounds better
They’re putting them in Beavers also
That is one ugly plane.
