    With an ongoing horsepower war among luxury sport sedans, Lexus decides to finally add some much needed muscle into the IS lineup, meet the replacement for the underpowered IS250, the 2016 IS300 promises to offer more power versus its turbocharged German rivals, but does that naturally aspirated V6 offer better performance?

    Just stepped from an older Cayenne S to this IS300. Definite step down (OK 3 or 4) in performance BUT much much much better as a daily driver. Wife will get this one in a few months I think it'll work well for her. I find myself wanting a bit more power and crispness. However, it succeeds wonderfully in it's appointed task; a comfortable luxury AWD sedan with just a touch, a hint, a suggestion of sport. It's a keeper.

    The is250 only has 205hp with its v6 because all lexus engines are underutalized for added reliability. This means they could have got much more hp out of it but instead opted for excellent reliability overall. I have a 2006 is250 and I dont find it slow at all especially compared to my 2005 hyundai sonata 4 cylinder. Im almost always leaving folks at the light. You really can't compare the Acura TLX to the Lexus IS 300 AWD. The TLX is total garbage. Also, the Infiniti brand is awful in its own regard as well. Lexus is the only Japanese luxury brand that actually competes with the Euro brands. That said, you didn't give this car a fair shake. Opinions are one thing, but exaggerating on the speed and the material quality is certainly outside of the bounds of opinion and need to be based on facts.

    • @hy77281

    • @mattmolloy636
      @mattmolloy636 Před 8 lety +1

      You may be correct. I could have gotten my point across by mentioning that they're both lower quality brands that are inferior in reliability, interior quality and design. They're actually doing a disservice to the reputation of Japanese cars being superior to American cars, especially now that Lincoln has started to redesign their vehicles and have made some excellent quality vehicles that break any notion of luxury that Acura and Infiniti may have enjoyed in the 90's. Acura is more of a "premium" brand at this point, and is no longer seen as a luxury brand by most. Infinitis plummet in value for a reason.

      While the Mercedes and BMW do end up costing more than this Lexus, it's hard to ignore all that you get in the new Audi A4 for the same money as this Lexus. We have nothing against Lexus and Toyota personally, but we do feel the current IS is due for a refresh, which it got for 2017 and looks as if Lexus addressed our concern with the small infotainment screen. Still no Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but Lexus just isn't the leader in interior design and quality anymore. They need to really do something to bring them back to where the Germans have stepped it up to.

    I still don't get the point of this particular model. Either you go for the IS200T or the IS350 if you want the more powerful option. A V6 Camry will starch this IS300 and yes this car is more luxurious but if the power plant is lacking then what's the point?

      I don't know what you mean by performance because the Lexus IS models are top handling vehicles in class with a great solid chassis and great steering. I feel like you're defining performance with power which means nothing for someone who works in more urban areas.

      @IKhanNot Před 8 lety +1

      curseknight5 I wasn't impressed with the IS 350 I test drove a few years ago. I did drive the previous generation but the cramped interior (I'm not even a big guy) was terrible and the handling wasn't even all that. Shit a C300 Sport handled better despite the vague steering feel and felt far more solid and significant than the Lexus. It felt more Toyota than Lexus which in this case isn't a good thing.

    Great review and video! Not everyone is open to critical comments about a car or company they have already formed an opinion about, and there are a lot of Lexus enthusiasts. Credibility is having the courage to be direct and simply say "I don't like it."
    Lexus is a good luxury brand, and the IS is interesting. I think the best design element is the upward slash from the side rocker to the tail lamps for the body panel cutline, and I think the worst are the overdone headlights and maw grille. Overall, excellent proportions, far better than other luxury compacts. To each their own, but kudos to the brand for not taking the safe well-traveled road and taking risks with their designs.
    For anyone thinking about this car, it is a gratifying, fun car to drive daily on normal roads. It feels quick but not fast, which is fine. I found it easy to point and very "clear" through corners, if that makes sense. However, much of this clarity and quickness comes from the staggered tires which come with very low treadwear ratings (130 if I remember!), which means that if you lease this car you will be replacing the tires before the lease is up. If you buy it, plan for a new set of tires every 20k miles. They are also staggered and unidirectional, so you will not be rotating them either. Just something to keep in mind.
    Sofyan is 100% accurate in his judgment of the interior. The center stack is visually cool, it reminds me of a high end Japanese home theater system from the 80s (in a good way), but it's a little let down by cheap switchgear on the doors and wheel and that awful screen from the 80s (in a bad way). Also, I have yet to read or see a single review of Lexus' Remote Touch controller saying how much they love it and think other manufacturers should take notes. I've used it, and I hate it. Compared to most of the competition, it's not acceptable any more.
    Overall, the interior is not bad, but it is certainly not excellent, and Lexus, having fought to be synonymous with excellence, has set a very high bar for itself. It is totally fair to argue that Lexus can do better, in terms of materials and refinement and that's not so much a putdown of this car as it is a compliment to the company's heritage of cutting edge luxury.

    To be honest though, I don't see the issue with power. 0 to 60 in 8.4 is fine for the old IS250. I've noticed that Americans are power hungry. We get for example a C180, 318i and A4 1.4TFSi. They have 1.6 litre turbos and the Audi has a 1.4 turbo. They all produce about 160bhp. For most that is really more than adequate honestly. I don't think you guys in the US are used to having luxury cars with small engines probably because average cars like a Camry has a V6...

    • @kenkozawa9810
      @kenkozawa9810 Před 8 lety

      yes, you are completely right as Americans in particular are very power hungry...they complain vehicles like a Prius don't have passing power as if everyone is racing against GTRs and Corvettes on the road? Any car that can do 0-100 kph in less than 10 seconds is fast enough for the typical driver..the last 20 years of horsepower and 0-100/0-60 time wars is silly, like everyone is a racecar driver!..but the underlying issue here is the same reason why people get suvs and pickup trucks when they don't need the space or functionality..all image. Toyota has long resisted adding extra equipment or performance in their models in general but they pay the price in how the public perceives them as being boring or cheap.

    I agree the C class has the best interior in this class and that's cause the C class has been overhauled and a new gen unveiled. This Lexus Is is the same since 2013 in my opinion adding spindle grill doesn't mean the interior has been revamped. The only German competitor with a better interior is the Mercedes-Benz c class but that has a far worse depreciation value and far less reliable. So you should always state the cons and pros of each brand and not just what u prefer. I don't agree one bit that the Audi A4 has a better interior though. I don't want to judge the 3 series harshly cause like the Lexus is still the same model that has been around for years just updated.

But my choice in deciding on buying the 300 over the 350 was price obviously.(when u get to a dealership you will find prices are alot more different than you think like 5 to 8 even 10 thousand dollar difference depending on package). But I knew it was just a detuned 350 engine. My question, how is it detuned? I feel like its the ecu. Would a plug and play chip open up the rest of its potential or am I going to have to go thru the usual intake, exhaust etc? Any help would be appreciated. I figured I could open up that last 50 hp and save a fe grand but idk what exactly was detuned. It literally looks exactly the same as the 350.

I'm still going to do the lil things besides the fart can exhaust. to gaudy for nice cars like ours :p. but only cost me a few hundred I didn't get a plug an play ecu tune tho. have a pro do it.

      RR Racing has tuning options for this car, including raising the rev limiter to 7200 RPM. If you don't want to do that they can basically make it into a 350 by making the ECU mapping the same as in the 350.

    My gut feeling tells me the 2.0T (the 8AR-FTS) in longitudinal form isn't compatible with the AWD system in the Lexus stables and that modifying either the engine or powertrain to fit may have exceeded the small budget on this aging design where $ should be spent on designing its successor. So in order to have a cheaper AWD model, it was more cost effective to take what they already have, the IS350 AWD and add some new code to the ECU to detune the entire thing and sell it off as a rebadged IS300 AWD.

      I feel that touch screen doesn't work in a car. Not until cars are more autonomous. A touch screen is distracting and there is no tactile feel. When going over bumpy roads or even just driving it you have to look where to press because it is too easy to press something else. The way the Germans do it is correct because while you are driving, it is much easier to make selections using something with tactile feedback to make selections.
