Gayathri Asokan, a prominent Malayali playback singer and composer, is well trained in singing Bhajans and Ghazals. In 2003, she won the State Award for the best playback singer for the movie Enthee Nee Kanna. She has also travelled with Sri Sri Ravishankar ji, her spiritual master, for concerts in India and abroad. She has shared the stage with Shankar Mahadevan, S Janaki Hariharan, and recordings with eminent classical singers like Pandit Jasraj and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. Gayathri also experiments with other genres like jugalbandis.

It is very heartening to see a malyalam speaking lady singing ghazals with perfect pronunciation ("talaffus") of Urdu words with such a feeling that it touches your heart.

your pronunciation needs correction, it is talaffuz, mr srivastava. most hindi speakers cannot distinguish between j and z.

It's a Ghazal by the last Mughal Emperor 'Bahadur Shah Zafar'. He was made a symbolic leader during 1857 revolt against British.

That was written by Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor to rule parts if India after 1857 First War if Independence.

Mehdi Hassan sung a very beautiful version of this song and made it famous for a wider audience. But, by no account he can be deemed as the one who composed the this ghazal originally.

You should also mention the artists accompanying Gayatri ji. They are an integral part. The starting Esraaj part just pierces through the heart.

This was a good attempt but I'm quite skeptical in saying that she's in the league of Shehenshah-e-Ghazal.

I have often enjoyed Ghazaliyath in the ghazals of some well-known poets of both Hindustan and Pakistan. But I have come to know that you can enjoy it even in a human voice and singing. Madam Gayatri has done full justice to this beautiful Ghazal of the last Mughal
