    What an amazing voice...I say this as a musician myself, primarily a vocalist and originally trained for over 7 years as a classical (opera) singer. Wow.

    Gosh, after all these years I still don't quite get what Adam is telling me there. But it's been the most haunting and beautiful song i had the privilege to listen to via the internet, so: thank u very much, Mr. Green. You are, in deed, a hero.

    Just a metaphor. You take from it what you want.
    I think the guy is his dad, and "Adam" (narrator) took over his role in the family: When his dad had an epiphany of how he treated his son over the years (badly), he felt so sorry he wanted "Adam" to commit revenge, instead though, "Adam" became the "man" in the family and belittled his dad's titile, hence the silent woman as the "mum".

      @@Hatguy23 I'll gladly follow that up! I think his follow up album to this with Binki Shapiro is equal in quality, but after that the music went downhill. I think he oddly focuses on his visual art now, music is more of a side thought. I also think he's focused on his family, which I get. Either way I think I was probably wrong, I'd say his best albums are Friends of Mine, Minor Love and Garfield.

    • @Hatguy23
      @Hatguy23 Před 3 lety

      @@gusterguy01826 Haha thanks for taking the time to reply! That's really interesting - I've only just discovered him so I am just getting my head around how much he changed over the years. Personally I'm not crazy about Garfield - it feels quite similar to what I've heard of Mouldy Peaches, and whilst it's good it feels more like novelty tracks than something I can relax and listen to. That said I've heard the same thing said about his more recent material!
      I'll definitely go back now and give those early albums more of a chance : )

    • @gusterguy01826
      @gusterguy01826 Před 3 lety

      @@Hatguy23 Garfield's songwriting is top notch, but the production does no service to the songs. He re-recorded "dance with me" and "computer show" for an ep and they sound so much better. Friends of Mine is great. Gemstones is very good too, but the production is a little "karaoke version of popular songs" at times. Jacket Full of Danger is ok, but you can tell he went overboard trying to make Gemstones on steroids (that album went Gold and had a #1 song in Germany, he was trying to keep the success train rolling.) Sixes and Sevens is an album that doesn't know what it wants to be, but there are a few good songs. Minor Love is damn good, so is Adam and Binki. Aladdin has a few good songs, Engine of Paradise the same (just over 20 minutes, really more of an EP). Of course, just one guy's opinions!

    • @Hatguy23
      @Hatguy23 Před 3 lety

      @@gusterguy01826 Thanks Burt, I appreciate it - gives me some guidance on where to go next. I hadn't even heard of Jacket Full of Danger - hasn't come up on my CZcams yet. I really like Friends of Mine and what I've heard of Gemstones fits your description exactly. I think there's a song in the style of Leonard Cohen on there? I'm enjoying Adam and Binki a great deal, as well as Engine of Paradise. It'd be a good idea if I listened to more of the albums as a whole rather than scattershot.
      If you had to choose a top five songs from him, which would they be?

    It's about a girl who seeks men who will abuse her and push her around ("somewhere there's a prince and he likes to strike me down")- she equates this with what a real man is ("how do you find a guy around here") but any abusive men she's found always seem to break down (They lack the "Boss inside") The partner she is with at the end of the song breaks down ("I guess the boss inside of him died") and she leaves, because he needs her more than she needs him ("I took his life instead")

    @theresistants im sure adam green is far from rich. im sure he does ok for himself, but this is a guy who has worked hard to get where he is. he's got an extensive library of songs in an era where most artists pop an album out every 3 years. and hes never made the same album twice. his live show is to die for, by the way.

    How do you find a guy around here?
    I've already sped through a year
    I've already tried all the campus bars at night
    even cried alone at the diner
    somewhere there's a prince and he likes to strike me down
    I know I'm not the reason
    I'm just the one he found
    and all these other cowards, they're not hard to boss around
    just get them in your arms
    and you hold them 'til they drown
    I walked back to the cottage with no hand around my wrist
    and I heard the sound of vodka bottles breaking
    I went out to the clearing, he was standing with a fist
    but I couldn't see the face that he was making
    he said make me some dinner
    I said I thought you'd never ask
    he was standing in my kitchen
    I was filling up his glass
    he finally started screaming
    and pointed to the bed
    he wanted me to kill him
    but I took his life instead
    ugly moments
    strung together
    and the poor guy couldn't even find his temper
    and he could no longer make me cry
    I guess the boss inside of him died
    I guess the boss inside of him died
    I guess the boss inside of him died

    I think the song is about a desperate woman who can't find her prince. To pass the time, she has several relationships with men she doesn't love. This makes her unhappy and sad. Her current partner is schizophrenic and can't find a way to get rid of his imaginary fiend. So he asks her to kill his imaginary fiend but in order to kill him, she's got to kill her partner, too. The boss inside is the imaginary fiend and that's why adam green ends his song with "the boss inside of him died".

    @MrChiliaison Dont know where you could find the schizophrenic part in this song. The guy isnt just as hard as he thought he would be. When he made the fist while she couldnt see his face - - maybe he was already weeping.
