OMG! I've been typing 'Ed Welch' and 'Clowns' into CZcams every couple of months or so for about four years, just hoping that one day someone somewhere would post it, and its finally happened! Bless you strawberg. 1976 was a vintage year for great pop singles, and this is one of the very best, yet least known. Thanks again.
The song was was originally released in 1971. I overdubbed the lead guitar on this version in London in 1975 or 1976 - it may have used the 1971 backing track.
I'm not sure how much of the original track was used. The strings and my lead guitar were recorded for this version - they are not on the '71 recording.
I always loved this song .. and I couldn't wait to tell you - from the same album . I think thats my brother Michael ( de Albuquerque ) on very tasteful bass & perhaps backing vox also .. possibly Cozy Powell on drums ?
De originele uitvoering uit 1971 is toch een poep beter. Jammer dat het nooit een hit werd. Het werd destijds enorm gepromoot door Radio Nordsee International. Let's make it a monsteres hit they told us.
What was the 75 / 75 version Laurence ? I thought I heard some guitars that were not on the original recorded in 1971 - on which Alan Gorrie ( AWB ) ; I think was the guitarist .. not that I remember there being much , if any .
Ken Bruce played this today on his buried treasure slot today on GHR....good song

Really? They sound very similar, but yeah I can hear it now.........
Seems slower as well.
This song was issued on single for United Artists 1971 (UP35284) in UK w. B-side The Bird Song..I have it, so I must be right!
Fabulous Turntable Hit. I have both versions, neither were chart hits.Prefer this version with the superior guitar work.
P:S: Laurence Juber, you are a genius.

@barryawy58 LOL! Me too. :)
Both versions are brilliant, guess it comes down to the "generation thing" that seems to settle it one way or another.
