    Irish statesman Edmund Burke is often misquoted as having said, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” Spanish philosopher George Santayana is credited with the aphorism, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” while British statesman Winston Churchill wrote, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
    Lessons from the past may not always ward off doom, but they can provide insights into the present and even the future. It's a hard lesson learn, when decades pass the impact diminishes.

      We are still a rather primitive primate species and thus traits inate to us that can be used to lead us have pretty much been the same for centuries. Whether in the name religious dogma or populism(just to name a few), fear and the solution offered to get rid of the source of the fear have united us quite easily for centuries. Sometime for good but mostly for bad.
      While the 20th century's end and the beginning of the new one gives me hope in that we have learned from the past as wars in general have become fewer, it also gives us scary examples of what can go wrong when the uneducated (when it comes to history) go and vote. Trump is the biggest but only one of the demagogues raising their ugly heads.
      It is paramount that we learn from the past. Remember the good but don't forget the bad times.

      Best example of this (to me). Go to their history channel, and watch the episode about The Six Day War (The song is called counterstrike). It's about the war of Jerusalem. Very touchy subject, for many many ppl. The most written comments are ppl saying "Hey I thought everyone would just be bashing eachother in the comments. But it's very civil. Because. Sabaton gives no opinion in the song, or the history channel. They just tell what happened. And you pick your own side.

They get away with singing about D-Day in Germany and Nazi Ghost division in Poland... Like you said, those who were involved back then, are not alive today (most of them). As a historian/history nerd myself I think the Zulu are very underrated. They took on colonial powers with way outdated weapons, facing muskets, rifles, and cannons mainly armed with little more than spears and shields and even sometimes winning! They even were extremely fast able to cross insane amounts of land on foot. That kind of achievement really needs more recognition in common history knowledge.
    We can acknowledge and respect history without desiring to repeat it.

  • @ztamizzen
    @ztamizzen Před 3 lety

    To be better in the future you need something to compare it to. So history is necessary. :)
    The song is about a mission station that belonged to a Swedish minister and the British protected it from the Zulu. There's a movie on Amazon Prime about it, called Zulu. With Michael Caine. 😊

  • @dallassukerkin6878
    @dallassukerkin6878 Před 3 lety +1

    Rorke's Drift is an iconic moment in British history, if you're from here at least :). I recall watching the movie of it as a young fellow and being utterly carried away by the messages of courage, self-sacrifice and, above all, not revelling in the defeat of your foes. The film, as with all films, does not cleave terribly well to the actual events in some respects (no respectful salute from the Zulu's for example, they left because the Prince in charge just realised he was in big trouble with his King for disobeying orders :)) but the spirit of it makes all men of the British Isles stand a little straighter when they watch it.
    No stronger a thread through it all is the stalwart Colour Sergeant Bourne - czcams.com/video/rxepGxyz-Y4/video.html It breaks my heart when he's reading the roll at the end of the battle and each of his men that are gone is echoed in his voice and eyes.

    My son, at Uni in Scotland, loves Sabaton and they are growing on me.
    While the music might not be your cup of tea I'd suggest you check out Home Free. They are like Pentatonix and what they can do with just the human voice is stunning. Enjoy it and react if you like but just listening and seeing what they do is worth the few minutes.
    When you study history, you study the good and the bad. You learn what not to do and what to emulate. History class can be very dull unless you're into it so I have tried to make history more hands on for my kids. We went on revolutionary and civil war trips to bring the kids where it actually happened and my son in Scotland is now studying archeology, so I think I did something right .
    In war, music was used as a communication tool. Fife and drum, for instance. It's actually very interesting.

History must always be alive, now, for the future, always. Keep it up!/Respect from Sweden =)

    Sabaton has a history channel, you can have a look at the history behind the song, it is not quite what you may expect it to be about.
    They are also the only ones brave enough to write a song about this part of African history, because of the nature of the history behind most of the events.

    • @Madison-iw8ix
      @Madison-iw8ix Před 7 měsíci

      People get really touchy about African history for some reason. No one seems to want to admit that the African people were just as savage and brutal as any other culture.

    I have seen Sabaton live... I think. I have this recollection that they were one of the opening acts in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium for Iron Maiden, but none of the songs they played really stuck in my mind. And I was really far away from the band, it was not a field ticket. This one I really liked.

    Another swedish power metal band I would recommend is Brothers of Metal. You could start by checking out Prophecy of Ragnarok; Yggdrasil or the Mead Song.
    I would also recommend Powerwolf and Orden Ogan, which are both German power metal bands.
    For Powerwolf I would recommend to start with Army of the Night, Amen and attack, Armata strigoi or something newer like Deamons are a girls best friend.
    Very good songs from Orden Ogan to start with would be F.E.V.E.R or Gunman.
    I hope you like them, they are all fantastic bands.
