Sometimes as RVers, getting to a special gem of a place means a bit of less traveled road. Washboards and 60 miles or more of gravel washboard road are the challenges that frequently we face to get to those special places that rejuvenate our souls. We've had an oven door fall off, a cabinet hinge come loose, but all in all, it is almost always worth it. Hammer down...the RV'll be fine.
I remember those roads! I’m Canadian, and didn’t expect such rough driving in my own country
Newfoundland's welcome sign is, or should be, Welcome to Newfoundland, home of the eternal potholes. That said, doesn't much matter what highway you are on, you are almost never more than 500 metres from some source of water and a spectacular view. And you were across the street from my house at Gatherall's whale tours. I'm in the big blue house just past there, you can't help but see it as you cruise into their parking lot, or from the cat as you dock. Yep. Saw my house.
Cool!! I visited Bay Bulls years ago on a somewhat cloudy day when the ocean was choppy, on a smaller boat than Gatherall’s. We couldn’t go far enough out to see any whales, so the captain made it up to us by bringing us probably way too close to a group of icebergs. What a spectacular site! I will never forget that experience (& I managed to see the whales off Victoria BC a few years later, so didn’t miss that experience as much!). Aren’t you lucky to have such a view outside your front door -- although as a southwestern Ontarian, I do *not* envy you your winters! 🥶🥶🥶❄️❄️❄️😊
Big Falls on the Humber River is an incredible place to watch leaping Atlantic salmon. One of the three or four best places. It is often packed. To Newfies, this is a wonderful road and place on the island. Love it.
Really glad you have seen some of the best parts of Canada. The Rock will stay with you for a long time - a great place with special people.
It may not be a surprise now but, most of our good comedians in Canada are good ol Newfoundlanders, they are the pride of Canada and represent the country's sense of humor I'd say the best out of all the Provinces.
Glad you guys are having fun in Newfoundland. I have lived in Canada all my life except for a few years in Florida (when we met you guys at the Tampa RV show). I served in the Canadian Army with hundreds of Newfoundlanders. Newfoundland is one of the provinces I have yet to visit, and PEI is the other. That will be crossed off soon since Missy, and I live near the bridge to PEI. Enjoy.

My father was from N.B. (Bathurst). It's crazy or his family was, but not as crazy as Newfoundland and Labrador. No weight limit on the bridge??? Typical. Oh, well! the R.V. made it across. I used to take the Hamilton Sound from Carmenville to Seldom Come By when I was a librarian / teacher at the high school. It was originally a summer ferry on the St Lawrence so it wasn't equipped to navigate that channel in winter and had to dock in Seldom because that had the better wharf. The safety equipment like life jackets was inadequate according to someone who was on board when the federal inspectors showed up. The people that ran the ferry didn't make sure that on lookers were well back when the cars drove off. it's a wonder no kid was ever drowned or run over. The government of N.L. now runs the ferry, I believe, not the Miller family.

I love watching you two show me things before I do them myself. I took an RV through Western "Canadia" 3 times to date. Retired Airborne Sapper Leader. I have gone over a bridge like that in Va/Wv alone with my full Size Dodge Diesel towing my 30Ft' 5th. I was a bit scared. 1/2 way across car turned on the bridge.
After a short talk "You can ground guide me backwards or back up." :D
He backed up. Got to love small roads in the country with riggs 40' long. My Rig Has Alaska plates so everywhere I go I get WOW ALASKA!!!!
BTW if you ever get a chance to try West Cost Ca.... The Yukon is so amazing or any south west...
I know exactly what Phil is thinking when on a bumpy road. We've hit a few of them and I can visualize a trail of parts, clothes and fluids along the road behind us because we've been shaken to death.
After a while one mountain looks like another, one town looks just like the last one and the last tree looks like all the others.
Exactly what I am finding after 2.5 years full time. A Canadian asked us if we had seem anything prettier in our lives than the view from the NP in CBI. Well, we've been to Yosemite, RMNP, Yellowstone, GNP, not to mention some of the views in Iceland. So, yeah, it was a nice view but not the best we've ever seen. It's getting harder to find sights that match the ones we've seen.
I cracked up laughing when after going so slow on that rough road, you pull up to the entrance of the campground only to have to cross..... a speed bump! They have a wacked sense of humor. LOL

We drove the other road in our Jeep but there was a large washed out section under water that prevented us from leaving the campground that way. The road was shorter but not maintained as well.
If you haven’t I totally recommend travelling around cape breton especially in the fall. Cabot trail takes a few hours to drive around and visit the stops, the skyline trail is beautiful. Amazing campgrounds like lake ainslie or the Mira and many others. Lots of hiking trails like gooseberry cove, coxheath mountain, louisbourg lighthouse trail and awesome food spots. Can visit the fortress of louisbourg, the gypsum mine fairy hole hiking trail and more!

Just gotta say, I did not understand how the boat ride needed entertainment like that when the views were far superior. How she could get those people to pay attention to her instead of the lovely boat ride views is beyond me. Glad you are enjoying Canada.
My sister who worked as a waitress in tourist joints and workers' bars out West says tourists love this stuff. . . With COVID rampant, I'm amazed those folks let that woman hit their mouth with a wet stuffed puffin toy. Was it a real shot of rum? I went on a field trip to the Grey Islands in the summer of 1978. We went across from Conche in a fishing boat that quit just out of the Grey Islands. A leader carried us over to the island on a zodiac. I guess I should have been frightened, but I wasn't the least bit frightened. You get used to Newfoundland's inconveniences after a while. You go with the flow.
I was thinking the same thing, I don’t want to be entertained I just want to enjoy the experience.
The ride is educational and entertaining - most visitors are on vacation and seeking fun activities ....Considerable interpretation is provided re the birds / whales but there's' plenty of time for some fun and foolishness too on the way back to the dock. Perhaps you'll have a chance to try it out in person someday.
No way would I put my foot in the bucket and have a wet sock and shoe all day nor would I let the stuffed animal touch my mouth. Good grief. Covid is on the rise already (15 people just in our small area and many schools in other states having to close schools for weeks as they started and covid spread right away.). I’d rather look at the beauty and the whales and dolphins were amazing!!

When you were walking and talking about how scary the bridge was, there was a truck sign hidden by a bush that could have had weights on it.
Newfs weren't big on signage when I was there from 1970 to 1978. You're supposed to know where the church is and what denomination it is, where the store is, where to get your license changed from Ontario plates to Newfoundland plates, etc. I don't think the schools had any names on them either or the public library. Locals would know what public institutions there were. There weren't many tourists in N.L. then and people didn't travel much.
I zoomed in on the sign and all it said was only one heavy vehicle at a time.

My mum was from Petites Newfoundland. A tiny village accessed only from Rose Blanche via a small boat. Been there many times before the few remaining residents left for good. That was in the mid 70's. I remember picking bake apples (berries) and dealing with flies when the wind wasn't blowing. They bite hard!
The way your motorhome rocked going over that road is one of the reasons we switched to a 5th wheel with a 1 ton diesel truck!! Much, much smoother!!
Hi guys you were real troppers on the island or rock, I live on Cape Breton island not far from the marine terminal. You will remember the rock for many years and it will come up in many conversations. Yes it is rugged, but than again very unique, thanks for your postings.
We were at that campground in early August lol Stayed 1 night and left It’s The boonies !

Our daughter and I did that whale watch tour in June some years back. We were graced with seeing icebergs and an oil rig in the Harbour just after leaving the dock.
I would leave New Foundland for next to last on the list if you’re visiting Canada. We were glad we picked it as our last adventure, we were able to unplug and relax while enjoying nature!
Puffins are the "mascot" of the trucking company I drive for. We are a refrigerated carrier. The puffin on our trailers, has a scarf around it's neck.
Love your videos. As a fellow newfoundlander, nice to see it promoted. I grew up about 30 mins down the coast from Port Aux Basues. You would see 4 communities down this way, Margaree, Isle aux Mortes, Burnt Islands (my home), and Rose Blanche.
If you encounter a bridge that looks weak, you might consider unhooking your jeep from the RV and driving it over separately to reduce the weight, and also to have a mode of emergency transport if something happens to the RV on the bridge.
Bridge: Did RV Trip Wizard allow that route? Starlink: So there is somewhere in the world that it doesn’t work! Loved all the marine you saw from the boat.
Yes, it directed us over the bridge but it doesnt mean we dont want to verify before driving over.
Hello, enjoyed the video. Lived in NL (Corner Brook) for a few years. Nice to see Big Falls, have fished there myself. As a general comment, NL has very specific regulations for salmon fishing, most notably that non-residents wishing to angle in scheduled salmon waters, i.e. where salmon are present, need to accompanied by a guide or a direct relative who is a resident of Newfoundland or Labrador. Fishing on scheduled salmon waters must be done with a single barbless hook (fly), in essence it is fly fishing only. Suggest review of regulations (on-line) regarding fishing, it is taken quite seriously in the Province in terms of a managed resource and fines can be quite severe for not following regulations. Am sure it was just an innocent coment about "..bringing your poles.." perhaps a bit of clarification might be in order with some text on the video so others don't get the wrong idea. Am not a native Newfoundlander, but there are entire videos related to dialect and speech patterns which are interesting and subject to much satire ("Where’s dat accent to b’ys? | 22 Minutes " comes to mind on CZcams). One particular point spoken to me in private by a native is to have NL rhyme with "understand" when spoken; others have commented same. Again, many thanks and enjoy your videos.
My husband’s family are from Corner Brook, Stevenson family. William Stevenson immigrated from Scotland early 1920’s
We went to that same Provincial Park in September last year just before they closed. There was another road you could have gone. We loved it but we are retired and do not worry about connectivity.
Oh, no! A better road? What is "connectivity" anyway? Why would you need the internet or a cell phone if you are traveling? My brother found the same thing when he was traveling about Newfoundland, but he had a store back in Belleville, Ontario so I can see why he wanted cell phone connection. His wife is the child of 2 Newfoundlanders who died young in Ontario so she'd never been to her ancestors' homeland. I think they enjoyed the trip.
We drove that road in the jeep and there was a huge section that was washed out and underwater. We could not take the RV that way. We were hoping we could as it was much shorter to the highway.
Limited selection is an issue across north America, I ran into that in Idaho and Montana

They were paving the road to Squires Prov. Park when I headed there to camp. It was a nightmare, pothole city drive. Fisherman were leaving park due to salmon fishing being bad in 2023. I would try it again if they got that road in better shape..people were fantastic

Hey guys, it still looks like a nice trip. Sorry, the camp spot didn't work out. Was a pretty spot and looked like a great spot for fishing, I guess, not so much if you're not a fisherman or fisherwoman.
I'm not sure I blame Phill about that road or the bridge. I guess that old saying about driving an rv is like being in an earthquake in the middle of a hurricane.
I was thinking the same thing just as Phil said, "Be careful opening every door." That type of road isn't good for anything except to find everything that's packed too loose or parts that are weak.
Other than the minor setback, it does look like ya'll are having a good time. And still beautiful scenery.

We also visited Fairyland and enjoyed the picnic, then you could walk in and order and they gave you a flag and they brought it out to you. Best picnic, I’ve had, very memorable, that is unfortunate that it was closed. We have also enjoyed visiting your beautiful state of Texas. 🇨🇦

It's a Bailey Bridge built to mil spec for armoured vehicles and trucks, would handle a rig like yours no problem

Screech is an acquired taste. Been deployed to Agentia , Gander and St Johns for International Ice Patrol. Gotta love the their ceremonies on welcoming you!
I've never been welcomed like that. It's for tourists! If you've ever hitchhiked around Newfoundland, you'll know how welcoming and helpful Newfoundlanders are. I've done it. Public transportation was limited back then and I didn't have a vehicle so I hitchhiked.
I'm a newfoundlander, and if one of them told men to put my foot in the water with my shoe on, I would have thrown the bucket at them. And then kiss the butt of the puffin that everyone else kissed. Ewwww. The western brook pond boat tour would have been a wonderful trip to take.
I have to say, me being on the west coast of Newfoundland, you missed an awful lot of beauty. Everyone always heads straight for Gros Moune then to St. Johns, skipping the Bay of Islands/Corner Brook/Humber River area. It's a small city, but absolutely beautiful, with amazing weather and so much green you'd think you were on a tropical island. So many people just skip right past it, thinking St. Johns is the only city to be in. We have a large port that Cruise Ships come into, cruise ship season is in full swing right now, and it goes right up till october, when all the trees change colours. Corner Brook also has 5 full sized grocery stores, plus walmart & shoppers. We are stocked up on everything. LOL. The Bay of Islands also has an amazing boat tour. You missed a lot on the wrst coast of the island.
The main ingredient in Screech is Jamaican rum.

T-mobile did not work in Canada. We had to break out Starlink and it worked great, when the trees weren't in the way.

Phil, if you guys are ever in Montana or Wyoming, you MUST try Wilcoxson's ice cream. It's the best we've had in the country. Although you can buy it in the store, get it at an ice cream shop.
Newfoundland is about the size of California with a population about 40 to 60 TIMES less than just about anywhere in the US. I am surprised you you have not mentioned getting fuel problems. Lesson one in living in Canada is buy good boots because cold and wet feet are normal.
We actually didn't have a problem getting fuel once we knew the trucker lanes were for truckers only.
During your trip to Newfoundland did you drink any drink called "Screech"?
I was stationed at Earnest Harmon AFB. and tried it a couple times. Wow what a drink.
We had it on our whale watching boat.
