It slows down just a tiny bit when I'm playing mp3 stuff as it isn't exactly optimized, but she's handled some late 90's games just fine.

  • @tuscani8205
    @tuscani8205 Před 10 lety +3

    Great video, i'm a long time Libretto owner and i think i can give you some important advice on them.
    You probably noticed by now, but in case you dont know, you should partition your CF/HDD bigger than 8GB at least in two partitions.
    Old computers arround that time usually were unable to recognize anything bigger than 8.4GB. Right AFTER the 8.4GB bios limit, arround 32MB of RAW RAM data is stored for the automatic hibernation when running out of battery. The librettos write directly into that area of the disk ignoring and overwriting completely any partition or data it lands on beyond that 8.4GB limit.
    In your case with that 8GB CF card, since it's not bigger than 8.4GB the hibernation data goes on the last 50MB of usable space of the card, so if i were you i would resize your primary partition and leave about 50MB of unused unpartitioned space at the end of the disk to avoid data corruption and most likely end up with an unusable partition.

    • @FAMICOMASTER
      @FAMICOMASTER Před 10 lety

      Can you explain that a small bit better for me? I just bought 3 of them, so I might POSSIBLY need to know this, I'm planning on putting an 8GB SSD in mine also...

    • @tuscani8205
      @tuscani8205 Před 10 lety +1

      Lets see. The libretto has a built-in always active hibernation feature that triggers when it reachs arround 10% battery capacity. This hibernation works different from the one that is built in windows, instead of writing the ram data into the filesystem as a regular file, it writes raw ram data on the last 32mb of the drive (not partition but physical disk). The problem with that is that the libretto bios cant recognize (or rather cant see beyond) anything bigger than 8.4Gb, so if your HDD is bigger than that, and your partition is using the area where the raw hibernation data will land (the last 32mb of the 8.4Gb partition, not after), you will end with a corrupted filesystem frequently. To work arround this, partition the libretto drive using a modern computer with a main partition of 8.3Gb, then just after that make a new empty partition of 150mb that fills the gap from 8.3 to 8.4 gb area, thats where the hibernation data will be and will not damage anything since its a dummy partition, any other partitions beyond that will not be affected from the hibernation file since they are made beyond the range of space the libretto bios can see. Since your drive will be smaller than 8.4Gb , all you have to do is leave arround 64Mb of free unpartitioned space at the end of your drive. Now something i dont know for sure is if this is going to work the same way with a CF card/ssd. Actually the way the libretto tells where the last 32mb of drive are is not that simple, it doenst look for the last 32mb, it looks for the last 18 physical cylinders of the drive, wich are non existant on these new flash drives. Anyways is worth a try and you can always report your success with it.
      I hope this helps you and other libretto owners. (Sorry for the rubbish english, it's not my main language).

    • @FAMICOMASTER
      @FAMICOMASTER Před 10 lety

      Okay, thanks for explaining it for me! 1 last thing though, HOW exactly do I format it like that? Thats my problem...

    • @tuscani8205
      @tuscani8205 Před 10 lety

      Sorry, i'm an idiot. The hibernation file always lands AFTER the 8.4Gb, i wrote that in a rush and didnt pay much attention because i had your 8Gb drive in mind from the beggining, Anyway you can follow the guide as is because i always add a little extra space in case the libretto feels like writting some of the data off, not the exact 32mb on the larger drives.
      Sorry for the mistake.

    I remember when the Libretto came out and I wanted one so bad but they were just too expensive. I was an amateur radio operator and wanted one to use it for mobile APRS and for programming older Motorola two-way radio gear that required genuine DOS, and because of it's small size, the Libretto was among the ONLY option at the time. As it is with most technology it would be a joke to even consider using these ancient devices for such a task given what's available in the world of APRS today but that's the way it is with everything.

    I have a couple of these I bought off ebay a few years ago, I got lucky because I got 2x 70ct systems with 16mb expansions installed, like 3 floppy drives, 3 docking stations with give you additional pcmcia slots, a few ac adapter and battery chargers ,extended life batteries, and a port replicator, I've replace the hardrives drives and reinstaledl the os several times, I think the last way I did it was I installed windows 3.1 first, then installed networking using a pcmcia network card, created a shared folder to copy the win 9x installation files(I use 98LITE MICRO.) Then installed windows 98 from the HDD. Although after messing with another older laptop (Compaq Armada 1585DMT),I decided that if I ever had to install windows again I would probably just use the docking station and put the install files on a CF card put the CF card into a PCMCIA adapter, use a windows 98 boot floppy and UNATA or a similar dos pcmcia storage enabler. Although it may possible to do the same thing without the need for 2 pcmcia slots, if you use a win98 or winME bootdisk with the ramdisk, you could copy unata to the ramdisk then disconnect the fdd and insert your pcmcia CF adapter, although you would still need a floppy drive.

      You can boot to the command prompt in Win95 as well. I don't remember but there was a line you could add to autoexec.bat that would cause the system to stop at the command prompt. If you wanted to get to Windows from there, you would just type "win" like Windows 3.1

    2 small complaints:
    1) Given the limits of the old Parallel ATA interface as far as data transfer speeds goes, you'd never see increases in read/write speeds like you'd find with modern Sata3 and M.2 drives
    2) You can run DOOM on most newer PCs with ZDoom and forks of Zdoom like GZDoom.

  • @dialupdavid

    I just got a Libretto 50M (A 50CT with a Touch screen believe it or not). Sadly, it was not taken the best care of-- It had a crack on the right side of the hinge (Which I can fix no problem), and the corner piece of the Hard Drive caddy Cover/door was broken off and missing a screw. So now I'm on the hunt to find a parts 50CT so I can get me my HDD Door and screw for it (They are very long). Once I've got everything settled I'll be overclocking from the Stock 75Mhz to 166Mhz, and installing an SD card in an IDE adapter for a high performance SSD equivalent. I found a company in Germany that sells NEW (Yes New) Libretto battery's from old stock, which is amazing. They are quite reasonable as well. Anyways, I keep coming back to this video as I would like to try the ram stacking thing you mentioned.

    • @dialupdavid
      @dialupdavid Před 8 lety

      AIO inc. Yes you can, very easily. Out of the more than dozen in my collection; not a single one is running stock. You can only overclock by soldering some jumpers on the motherboard. There (As far as I'm aware) isn't any software configurable settings for the Pentium at the time (all on the motherboard). Everything is controlled either by the BSEL jumpers on the chip itself, or manipulating the PLL chip that generates the FSB. I usually overclock the PLL from 60Mhz FSB to 66Mhz, then change the multiplier which nets me 166Mhz. MAJOR improvement in speed. Believe it of not, a lot of them actually have underclocked 120Mhz Pentiums inside, as Intel stopped making the 70Mhz versions that where used prior.

    I was spending more of the video eyeing up the IBM ThinkPad in the background rather than watching the Toshiba.

    +Doogie Rick How do you put the os on the compact flash? I dont know how to do it. I want to install windows 98 on my 50CT but i'm not sure how you had put the os on the compact flash. When I start mine up it just says "Missing Operating System.

    Edit: May I ask you about the resolution of this screen? It actually looks pretty nice for being that small.

    Just curious...I don't plan to buy this as I've no money ATM, but do you still have it? If so, where is it now, and if not, how did it go?

    It's kinda hilarious, but I actually want one of these to be able to hotsync some of my serial Palms, as I currently have an older desktop fulfilling that purpose. This would be awesome! with Windows 98 SE!

    Awesome video but the 50ct never had a pentium mmx processor, it had a 75 mhz pentium replace later by a 120 mhz pentium (without mmx) so why yours has a mmx sticker on it ? If you have the answere, i'm interested !
