I have the dark green Jimny and something is a little off with them. Perhaps it's the lower voltage on the 4 aaa batteries. I think wiring in a LiPo and coming up with some better metalwheel/tire combo would do the trick nicely.

The added weight of the fake is mostly due to the larger screws used - like a weighted lower center of gravity.
For $90.00 there is not much to complain about. The question is does it accept the real Mini Z hop-ups or are you stuck with what you get out of the box?

I wouldn’t feel bad about showing off a “knockoff” of a Kyosho vehicle, because if we are all being honest with ourselves, mini-z’s are extremely overpriced, and very outdated tech. If Kyosho wants to charge over $200 for a 1:24 scale RC, it should come with modern RC tech, not the same system from 20 years ago.

    • @microrigs

As all said, the Kyosho is overpriced, everyone in the scene that bought a mini z 4x4 noticed they are weak and un capable. For the price you can get an Axial (not to mention a cheap Chinese copy) and a ton of upgrades... And have way more fun.

Most times you can find a competitor that's better for less, a lot less . Seriously, If you don't over price your product then you don't leave much room for knockoffs to be profitable, kinda sowed your own fate by being greedy, in my opinion

It will give you just over 2 volts more then the 4 AAA setup. What a difference it makes. More juice = more power!!! This is how I setup my mini z's now. The more we support companies who steal IPs and have no original designs of their own, the less time and effort legit companies will put into original designs. just sayin...

I have to absolutely agree with Chuck.
I have been a Lego builder for the last 50 years of my life and it truly annoys me when copy cats steal the designs that Lego engineers have spent countless hours working on.
The same with Kyosho, their engineers have spent a lot of time designing their products as well as paying license fees for using the body design.
Perhaps if people stopped supporting the copy cat companies and supported Kyosho they could lower their prices and refresh their designs.

For the record though. It is not only the Chinese that clone. Germans do it too now. For the ALDI store they got that River Cola. It got the same colors and writing style too. Frankly it even tastes the same yet costs ~1/3 of the original Coca Cola that you can by at the same ALDI right next in the same shelf.

4 transmitter trimming all in wrong direction, so if you trim to left, it will go right. Front will go back..
5 front light cups need to drill 3mm hole to install leds...
6 you cant reset center point from transmitter like the miniz does, only way to center is from the trim vr.

Good review once again. I wouldn't be too worried about the clone eating into the Mini Z market. I think that people who are into Mini Z'ds are only going to buy MIni Z'ds. It's a brand thing, especially important in Japan. Perhaps not so much outside of Japan though.

The difference is simple, Kyosho spent a lot of money and time to develop a good product, source quality parts, get the scaling correct, licenced the Jeep image, and then some chynese thief swooped in and copied it for free. Now lets all run out there and reward the thief.

Being new to the hobby I can't seem to understand the draw to the mini z. Seems like you can get a scx24 or fcx24 cheaper and they have more support and better tech. For $200+ I was quite underwhelmed by the mini Z when I had a chance to use one. I felt like it should be around $100 considering what else is out there for those price points. Went with a FCX18 and could not be happier. Just ordered a FCX24 Black K5, he was sold by the 2-speed motor and the look. Can't blame him 😀

Kinda reminds me of what Happened with RocHobby and Eazy Rc. EAZY Rc ended up being the same company as Rock Hobby using maybe slightly lesser quality packaging and lesser quality material. Maybe Kyosho owns owns the lesser brand and is putting out a copy cat of their high end vehicle knowing that Kyosho fans won’t go for the lesser model, yet making money on the green one , because there is a market for these for guys like me who like to save money. My bet is the “clone” is actually an affiliate company to Kyosho. Bet they will sell a ton Of these clones while selling a fair amount of overpriced mini z’s too to people who are brand snobs and value means nothing! Great video Phil!😎👍🏻🍻

Clones / copies whatever you want to call them are getting closer to original than ever before no matter what the item .
Drag break aside, the clone performed pretty much the same really. Not been able to get my head round the price of the original Kyosho ones , and as you mention Phil it's bizarre putting triple A's in a £200 car. I wonder if adding the extra 7 grams the original would climb aswell as the clone ?

I mean, to be honest. I love kyosho, I pretty much have a 4runner modded to the 9's. They are just not as capable as axial scx24's though. I'm just going to be honest, cheaper, better mod availability and they perform better and it's easier for them on obstacles. Kyosho's just look good and they are more "to scale" vs scx24's. So I can see why people would like the appeal of a replica mini z but then again. You can spend like $40 more and just get an axial instead. Plus when you mod a kyosho they don't perform well and you really have to keep adding on mods.
