- Photodynamic Therapy can be used to treat acne, sun damage and early skin cancers on the face and other parts of the body. It is performed by applying a photosensitizing medication called aminolevulinic acid to the skin and letting the medicine absorb into sebaceous glands and precancerous skin lesions. Once the medicine is concentrated in these areas, a light or laser can be applied to the skin to activate the medication and cause a photodestruction of those sebaceous glands or precancerous skin lesions. The procedure greatly improves sun damaged skin as well. One must stay away from UV light exposure for 48 hours afterwards to prevent severe sun burning of the skin. Photodynamic Therapy is a very effective procedure for these concerns and can be repeated several times to achieve the best results. Watch Dr. Shalini Gupta of the Dermatology, Laser & Vein Center explain the Photodynamic Therapy process in this video.

Again i have a question. Is it okay to do levulan PDT(blue and red light) on fair indian skin type?
Yes absolutely! It’s safe for patients of all skin types.
@@cincinnatiskinandlaser Thanks Dr Gupta, you are solving many of my questions.💛
Awesome, to the point information.
I just have a small question, does it affect the sebaceous glands for extended period or permanently to get rid of acne or atleast reduce the remission in future?
How long does the result stays intact? Can it be a cure?
Hi Nivy. Great questions! Photodynamic therapy can have a long lasting effect on the sebaceous glands and can potentially be a long term cure. One may need touch up procedures at times to keep things under control. In many cases, patients prefer such procedures to long term oral medication use such as hormone treatments, antibiotics or accutane.
@@cincinnatiskinandlaser Thank you soo much for your reply
How many of PDT treatments can a patient have? It's been recommended for my acne...
Hi. We recommend 3 treatments spaced 3 weeks or so apart. Some patients may do well with fewer and others may need more to get control of their problem.
@@cincinnatiskinandlaser I see...
