Listening to this album while listening to facts about Illinois from your dad is a refreshing feeling.
If I had a nickel for every time the song John Wayne Gacey Jr was brought up in this series amid a discussion of serial killers, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

Really love how your dad was kinda clowning on the album and then you can see him change a little while listening to Casimir Pulaski say. This album has something for everyone because bares the human condition. It’s easy to kind of make fun of it for how grand and important it sounds but there is so much timeless magic encapsulated in it. I really feel like it touches the soul in such an unexpected and disarming way and that is why it’s one of the best albums ever made.
This is one of my most favorite albums of all time and as a gay boy from central Illinois it really affected me in so many ways. Sufjan’s lyrics are always absolutely incredible, but for me the beauty of this album comes from the sheer amount of sound. The orchestra’s, the symphonies, the range of composition in the album. If you’re the type of person who doesn’t get much out of instrumental music, or like vocals and lyrics make the song for you then I definitely can see how someone wouldn’t enjoy the album, but if you enjoy or are able to appreciate the intricacies of the instrumental composition of the songs then this album just blows everything out of the water. This album means SO MUCH to me and will always be at the top of my all time favorite albums

The first time I listened to this album was actually with my dad in his car on a rainy day. Amazing experience and it’s an album even my dad holds in high regard

illinois is such a riveting and gut wrenching record, glad to hear your dad liked it. I put a wrench in a 16 year old boys gut in illinois. It was 1998. I was walking near Fulton, and i stopped by the river bend middle school. I broke in, and found the woodshop class. I never had this class in my schools, and I was surprised this elective even existed. I stole a wood wrench, most likely made by a child. It was rigid, crude, and poorly made. I ran out of the school, and thought i would keep this tool for the rest of my life. It was out of my hands thirty minutes later. I kept walking, smiling ear to ear, happy with my find. I saw a van pull into a near by 7/11 and 2 brown haired boys hopped out. One looked under the age of 12, and the other one looked about 16-17. The mother very much resembled her kids facial structure, but she had blond hair. I walked into the 7/11, looking for the candy bar, and thats when my animal instincts got the best of me. I threw the 12 year old and the mother back into the van and forced them to flea. I punched the teen in his nose, severly damaging it, and he punched back just as hard. I raised the tool, but he grabbed it out of my hand and shoved it in my stomach. He yelled “WHERE DID YOU GET MY BROYHERS WRENCH YOU FUCKING MANIAC”, and thats when my heart dropped. I took his brothers wrench. I couldnt believe myself, but i couldnt let the teen win. I pulled the wrench out of my body, leaving me externally bleading, and shoved it into HIS stomach. He died instantly, and i was happy knowing i would too, but i didnt. Im still here. The mom crashed the car leaving the 7/11, and The crime was framed on the cashier working there. Im still here. The john wayne gacy song is really more than just comparing himself to a serial killer, its offering some context and reasons (not excuses) for his problems...so also empathy. He reminds us that gacy was actually quite likeable among people who knew him. The comparison of gacy to himself is from the biblical principle that everyone is a sinner and everyone needs God. He made the point that while gacy literally kept his secrets under the floorboards, we all have our own floorboards and our own secrets and the relative severity of them (compared to other people) doesnt make us less sinful.

I would not have known what to do with this at age 14. I baely knew what to do with it at age 54. But i do hear you. I grew up on blues based rock and roll so sufjan was completley out of my comfort zone....i didnt know how to like this at first but with sheer repetition and diligence i learned to see the beauty in Sufjan's music. So he is becoming a very sweet comfort zone for me.
If you are considering another sufjan album i would try Ascension. 😊
Its important to remember that while Sufjan is super unique, there is always something experimental going on and it opens people's minds to what music can be.

im not sure if you look at comments, this wasn’t an issue for me because i listen to this album religiously, but doing a quick little song title at the top would help a lot for people! just so they knew how far in the album you are and when a song changes

I agree...but I also get that comparison in the sense that this album is a grand, orchestral storytelling experience. There's actually a dance musical version of this show opening on Broadway in a couple weeks.
