Phil and Andy converted this Box Van about a year ago and we met them in Spain just before Christmas and took the time to film their Van conversion.
The spaciousness of a box van really opens up the possibility for a more 'home like' living space and not to mention it is much easier to build in a square box than it is a panel van made entirely from curves!
They pimped the electrical system with 500W of Solar Panel and 4x 130Amp hr AGM batteries giving a total of 520Amp hrs. This is a lot and certainly means they have plenty of redundancy considering they do not have a huge amount to power in the van.
I liked the entry through the cab - it takes away some of the issues with adding a big side door and the layout complications this creates. Personally I would have just gone for a gas heater - when it is cold and miserable outside the wood tends to be wet too but a wood burner does give a nice feel to a place.
It was also interesting to see traditional building techniques - like the plaster ceiling holding up well after 11 months of driving it around mountainous climbing areas.
Despite the heavy construction materials - large oak work-tops and double thickness kitchen unit walls etc.. the end result is very nice and you can see if and when they build another next van they will remedy these relatively small issues.
I hope you enjoyed this tour, don't forget to help us out by liking and subscribing :)

They cared more about the wings and bits and bobs hanging to decorate than the functionality of the unit. No ladies are staying in that that’s for sure 🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️

There is alot of hate for this build, personally I found it to be interesting and like many other people I would have done alot of things differently and used different materials.
That being said it is a clean build and for what they wanted is fit for purpose. You can have success without failure and although its more like a house on wheels it is far from a failure.
If you guys did another one I hope you have learnt your lessons and just seeing how you have done everything and seen the available space (was keen to see how you fitted the fix bed) has given me alot of do's and dont;s so thanks.

  • @Wishwader
    @Wishwader Před 5 lety +16

I learn a lot from “what would you have done differently” so thumbs up for asking that question.
One addition at the top of the list needs to be a gas safe enclosure. A bit surprised they thought to get a refillable gas bottle (very wise, especially for travelling) but forgot the safety part. All it needs is an air tight metal locker to put the bottle in, with either an external access door or a robust air tight interior door, and a hole on the floor of the locker leading to the outside. Especially if they plan to sell it.

I feel like either there wasn’t enough research for design done or they did the research but didn’t know how to implement their ideas. In this case it would be hugely beneficial for people to speak with an interior designer - this is what they do and they can talk you through ideas and make it worth your while so you don’t end up with this. I see where it was supposed to go not quite there yet for me 😁❤️

So many cupboard doors fallen off :D but yea, I'd skip the heavy stuff, like the wood burner and kitchen being super solid.
One thing I'm wondering is why people keep wanting inverters, it's a waste of energy, since most small electronics run on DC anyway... I'd probably run a 24V system instead,, easy to convert to 12V and 5V without much energy waste... then perhaps have a 200W inverter in a storage space somewhere, in case it's needed. 24V is also compatible with much of the long haul trucker and boat equipment that's been used for decades. But of course, it'd require some proper size cables to run the wiring if you want to pull that wattage out of every outlet. Most laptops do well with something like 19V DC, Most phones are charged by 5V DC, LED lights are DC... AC is very good for distribution, but most light electronics wants DC, solar is DC and changing voltage is easy without much waste energy, unless you plan to run a motor off it.

I am thinking about doing a box truck conversion and haven't seen many already made up. This gives me a good idea what my layout might look like, even though I insist on a bathroom in mine. How long is the cargo area? Seems like I can squeeze two beds into my imaginary layout and still have a bathroom and mine didn't have the over cab bunk space. I like the windows and the fact the open space above makes it look roomier than the usual Sprinter van conversions. The length box I am going for is 14 feet. Perhaps this one here is shorter.

I'd like to see how much or what it would take to own a crockpot and cook every 4 or 5 days and have a good refrigerator to put the stuff in plastic containers in it! I want good food! I'm vegan and vegetarian mostly want to be vegan

Watched the build of this van by these guys....Right pair of characters! All the best guys from back home in the UK! P.S Nate? Love the vids, the climbing ones scare the crap out of me but for some reason I still keep watching! Hoping to do my own van soon enough. In mad saving mode. Hoping to hit 50 and drop out!

No toilet or shower and you call its luxury......The very basics humans need in a home. Least you have slate on some walls

Showers aren't the best idea for a van. Lots of expense, waterproof compartment and plumbing and hot water heater, and if you actually use it, there goes all your water. It's way more functional to just have a shower that works out the back of the van.

@@xyzzyxyzzy2 If they aren't the best why does every single motorhome/van converting company add them in??? BECAUSE PEOPLE WANT TO TAKE A SHIT AND HAVE SHOWER

Showers are a complete luxury no question but a toilet can come in handy for emergencies.

The bed design is suspect. He could have done a much better job with that space.
