This is one of those remakes where it is better than the original and I am a HUGE Leonard Cohen fan as well. Martin's version just captures it so beautifully. HUGE Depeche Mode fan as well. Been with them since the beginning.....
Jennifer I agree. I am also a huge LC fan and like his voice but when I heard Martin Gore's version I was addicted I think he conveyed the meaning of the song so well. I used to listen to this on my way to work on repeat over and over. Love the rythmns too. Thanks for the upload.

It's amazing how well he captures the feeling of this song. The song itself is a wonderful poem about the struggle between desire and pride, and both Cohen's and Gore's versions express that conflict beautifully. But while Cohen's version sounds simply resigned to that fate, Gore captures a desperation and hidden suffering that is just crushing. When you still love someone that's hurt your pride, you try constantly to talk yourself out of going back... "All I've said/ is just instead/ of coming back to you". Brilliantly done.

I completely agree THEDERP KINGDOM....used to listen to Martin Gore's version when I first bought Tower of Song CD and was mesmerized by HIS rendition...I think there are two on that CD...I had never heard of him or Depeche Mode...you describe it beautifully. Love the arrangement too.
Love Gore's version of this song. Yes, the desperation of it all. When I first heard it on Tower of Song, I didnt know who he was, and kept playing it over and over it was so powerful. Than I discovered he is from Depeche M. Don't really care for them, but love martin gore.
