Their name Wagakki 和楽器 means:
Wa 和 = japanese style
Gakki 楽器 = Musical instruments (楽 = Music・器 = Tool)
So you can understand the word as "traditional japanese musical instruments"
The "japanese guitar" is called shamisen and the big wooden pick you use to play it is bachi.
The drums are taiko.
The thing that kind of looks like a harp is koto.
The flute is shakuhachi.
Not only is the band amazingly talented and beautiful but major props to whoever is running the mixer board at this live concert. It's incredible and not an easy thing to do.

So in Japan Wagakki Band is more popular than just about everyone you have reacted to so far. They had an album reach number 1 and 2 albums reach number 2 which is unheard of for non pop group. They were supposed to perform in the opening ceremony of the Olympics last summer and hopefully still will this summer. All the Japanese bands I have discovered over the last few months nothing hits you quite like this. I am sure others will fill you more in on the instruments

@@the50-person I mean no I'm just going off other comments, I could be wrong. But generally opening ceremonies for Olympics are secret. Last Olympics in 2010 in my home Canada, no one had a clue for sure the ceremony. So it be neat if it is true and still is, I hope for the amount of money Japan spent they can pull off the Olympics still.

Playing shakuhachi is incredibly difficult...I have been a professional musician since 1966 and I have yet to be able to play a single note on the damned thing.
It's the breathing. The highly unnatural breathing where you inhale from nose and immediately send out that air via mouth. A loop. Allows one to drag dat note almost indefinitely.
Though I dunno if that got anything to do with producing a note😅

This is one of the best things I've been introduced to on CZcams so far! That was an amazing performance. I was waiting for you to get to Waggaki Band, and your reaction did not disappoint. Keep going with them, they rule. Senbonzakura is one of my favs of theirs.
Always love the shock by the reactors to the beautiful Bene , never gets old. Yuko the singer was the catalyst for the forming the band. They want to encourage interest in the traditional instruments of Japan by the young Japanese. Each musician is a master of their instrument and some teach. They have toured the US and there are interviews (Eng subs) on CZcams. There are other candid videos of the them, unfortunately no subs. One last thing, those are Cherry Blossoms on the guitar.
By the way, Asa the bass player is a guy. Just thought I would mention, so you don't take two years to figure that out.

Yeah, DAMN IT! His voice is deeper than mine. Again, damn it. It has taken some getting used to... LOL. But he is magnificent on the bass, no matter which one he uses. But then they are all masters of their instruments.
The instrument you're referring to is a shamisen. They're amazing, though I'd call them more of a banjo than guitar.
So I've seen people react to Wagakki Band quite a few times, but there's one thing I've always wanted to see happen that never has. They have a very popular cover of "Senbonzakura" (a thousand cherry blossoms) which was originally a Vocaloid song performed by Hatsune Miku and created by Kurousa-P. A dual reaction would be really cool because there's a decent chance you're not familiar with Vocaloid singers at all and you could give your thoughts on both.

Babymetal, Band-Maid, Wagakki Band - music for the 21st century. Mobile phones aren't allowed at concerts generally in Japan and so the audience is always more involved with the band than in the West. Like all concerts were until the 90's here in the West! I think the design on his guitar is Sakura - cherry blossom. Best flute solos since Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson!
I don't think "allowed" is the right word here... They are just respectful and want to enjoy the show, but they get to keep their phones and some (very few) fans still record parts of the shows.

I've been binging on your videos for two days now and I really love that you are open to all kinds of music. There is love for the music and I really appreciate that, especially with all the assholes gatekeeping and being generally unpleasant.
Wagakki Band is one of the best Japanese groups out there. They combine traditional Japanese instruments and vocal styles with modern rock, metal, jazz, and more. All eight members are master level musicians, and their lead singer, the very elegant Yuko Suzuhana, is definitely the best female Japanese vocalist I have heard. Wagakki Band is second only to BabyMetal in international popularity. The video for their song Senbonzakura has more views than Gimme Chocolate. Wagakki Band is even better live as their stage shows are musical extravaganzas that rival the very best BabyMetal concerts. You are correct that Japanese bands encourage audience participation and Wagakki Band does it a lot. I doubt many Wagakki Bands fans would object to you rewinding to show us another ten seconds of Beni playing her shamisen. Their Western style drummer, Wasabi, is not alone in looking like he just stepped out of a Japanese video game. Throughout their many videos all the members of Wagakki Band do so.

@@babymetalarchive6865 Yes, I do have a problem with BabyMetal. They should have let Kano, Momoko, and Riho sing during the concerts on their last tour. Aside from that, I absolutely adore BabyMetal, and have been a fan for going on seven years now. BabyMetal is the most successful music act to ever come out of Japan and are well-known around the world. Like many other people, it was BabyMetal that led me to other groups such as Wagakki Band, Band Maid, Doll$Boxx, Sakura Gakuin, the Hu Band, and more. Because of this, I will often mention BabyMetal when commenting on reaction videos to other groups as a measure of how good or popular they are. I do not compare others with BabyMetal because one thing I love about all these bands is how different they are. A fan of BabyMetal, Wagakki Band, or Band Maid will instantly recognize one of their songs as being them, yet the sound of these groups are all unique, even if they do share some superficial similarities. In conclusion, I would like to share with you a delightful discovery I stumbled upon recently. I predict that the next big music act to break out of Japan with be Atarashi Gakkou. They are four young Japanese ladies aged 19-22 who sing and dance while wearing high school uniforms. Unlike Sakura Gakuin's sweaters and blazers, Atarashi Gakkou's uniforms are more akin to sailor suits. Their music is a mix of J-pop, jazz, and hiphop. This means their singing and dancing is frenetic and funky. They also incorporate gymnastics into their dance routines, which give them some impressive moves. Atarashi Gakkou are also a bit goofy (some might say weird) and that makes them a lot of fun to watch.
Ah yes, I've been looking forward to you reacting to this lot, this is the standard intro video to them (and wonderful it is too!), but wait until you see their music videos, quite extraordinary!

Each one of them is a master at their profession and they manage to perfectly combine that into a performance thats almost transcendental
They are exceptional, each and every one of them is an expert in their field. They do pop, rock, ballad, metal, jazz, and every other thing all with traditional Japanese touch, even down to the vocals. Biggest overseas performance of a Japanese band in recent history, only second to Babymetal. So many songs and shows down the years, here are few of my favourite:
- SENBONZAKURA (their first)
- SABAKU NO KOMORIUTA (chilling vocals)
- SYNCHRONICITY (jazzy tunes)
- CRADDLE OF ETERNITY (notable for collaboration between Yuko Suzuhana of Wagakki Band with Hideki Aoyama and Leda Cygnus of Kami Band)
Just to give you a heads up. Wagakki Band reactions have been blocked in the past, but I think it's mostly the official MVs. If you stick to the live stuff then hopefully you will be safe.
Their most popular song is "Senbonzakura". Other Good choices are "Synchronicity" and "Yoshiwara Lament".
In addition, if you like the traditional Japanese sound, you should check out BAND-MAIKO - "Gion-cho". It's a band you haven't heard before and definitely not BAND-MAID in disguise.

I think the flowers on Machiya's guitar are Sakura, Cherry Blossoms, which is probably the tree that's most "typical Japanese" ;)
You can also probably put him on the list of "one of the best guitar players in Japan who doesn't have a lengthy solo in every song", together with Takayoshi Ohmura from the Kami Band (only counting the ones without a lot of solos in their songs and who are more well known "in the west", so don't lynch me please).

Beni, Beni, Beni. Can you believe that she started as a youtuber doing shamisen cover songs until she was discovered by the band ? Some of her videos are still around.

Shamisen (banjo thing). Koto (harp thing). Shakuhachi (flute thing). The band was founded by the singer, Suzuhana Yuko, whose previous thing was traditional Japanese sung poetry. So they will always be steeped in that tradition.

When they lost their original shamisen player Beni: who is a national champion shamisen player, just showed up at one of their rehearsals and told them that she was their new shamisen player. She had never met any of them before.
They agreed with her.
Their official CZcams site can be found under 和楽器バンド * WagakkiBand. A lot of their older stuff is on the Avex channel. Both live and MV. Their music videos are tastefully done too. Many titles are done in Japanese only, which can be a bit of an impediment to getting reaction referrals.

One advice i would give if you do another video about them, prefer reacting to their live performances. Two reasons for that:
i) they are great live
ii) their record company is a serious copyright claimer, so if you post one of their official videos its very possible that they will take your video down :(
My recommendation for a next Wagakki Band reaction would be 'Sabaku no Komoriuta' where you can clearly hear the Shigin style of vocals the singer uses, or you can do one of their live instrumentals pieces (like Homura you did here - which you can NOT find in their albums, they are played only at live performances) an example would be the 'Tono monogotari yon yon' or 'Chie no kajitsu + Somosan seppa').
The Japanese music rabbit hole is a deep one, glad you found them! They just did a couple of songs with Amy Lee (Evanescence) recently. Check that out. The live version of "Bring Me To Life" is just amazing, and should definitely be on your watch list!
We are now at that point in music when mixing modern and traditional instruments and musical structure is really getting creative and very interesting. I love it. Great reaction! I know you love Nightwish and the genius of Tuomas Holopainen the keyboard player and leader of the band. I would love to recommend another amazing musical genius to you. Try Ayreon and the track "The Day That the World Breaks Down".

Japanese crowds are handsdown among the best. The impressive concert culture and their general appreciation for live music is probably the biggest reason why rock/metal scene is so vibrant and thriving there while most of the world is being dominated by Hiphop and electronic pop.
I have honestly yet to find a band with subpar musicianship even among their pop rock bands who usually play simple melodies with standard song structures.

Ninagawa Beni (family name is first over there) is the one playing the shamisen, and she is one of my favorite musicians of any genre.... I don't know how she doesn't break it the way she plays it so fast and hard sometimes.

This Japanese band is AWASOME!! I recently watched your reaction to the HU, from Mongolia, they quickly became one of my favorite bands a little over a year ago, the video you watched has 2 versions, the other one is exactly the same with english subtitles so you can understand what they are singing about, you weren't to far off actually, however you said it was acoustic and it's not, they have electrified traditional Mongol instruments, you also said something about America not having something to review, LOOK UP A BAND CALLED LILIAC, you wont be sorry, also try a band called THE WARNING 3 teenage sisters from Monterey Mexico who have put out 2 albums and are working on their 3rd, it's amazing stuff!!!

To keep on the international tour, try Rammstein from Germany. Du Hast is their breakthrough song and has a hell of a beat. Must do the live shows, their live shows are pure craziness. Til the lead singer is a licensed pyrotech if that gives you an idea. I did a search and did not see any results, so hopefully you haven't done them already.

Er... cherry blossoms not lotus flowers but never mind lol. A couple of points about the instruments. The flute player plays a shakuhachi... a sort of end blown flute made of bamboo. The traditional drums are called wadaiko although this term can be used in Japan to denote any sort of drum. The instrument most representative of Japan is the koto; the large zither like stringed instrument. In common with many Japanese traditions it is of Chinese origin being based on an instrument first introduced from China in the 8th century. The shamisen is of much more recent origin, having been introduced from China in the 16th century. The type of shamisen playing here is a relatively modern innovation known as tsugaru shamisen, typified by fast, intricate playing, which became popular in the early 20th century and remains so to this day. There are a couple of myths about the shamisen, namely that it was solely an instrument of women and that it was played with a fan. Neither is true and I suspect the myths arose from the fact that it was an instrument of choice for the geisha class. In fact the instrument was and is played by both sexes and is played with a sort of specialised plectrum known as a bachi made of wood, tortoiseshell or ivory (modern cheap bachi are usually plastic). The type of bachi used depends on the type of shamisen playing. Beni here I believe uses a relatively small bachi, tipped with tortoiseshell, most used in the tsugaru style to facilitate the fast technical playing.
I'll put in a request for the Senbonsakura music video on the Avex channel. Or just go to the WagakkiBand or Avex channel and pick a title with lots of hits. You might have to stick the Japanese text into a translator.

Can you react to a band that inspired most of the big bands from Japan nowadays? Creators of Visual kei style. X Japan. They have INSANE background as a band, vocalist brainwashed, bass player took his own life, guitarist died of accidental suicide which lead to Tokyo being packed with fans more than 50 000 mourning his loss. Creator, main lyricist and composer, who is also their drummer and pianist lost his father when he was 10 and he was born with many diseases mainly a fragile body( bones etc ) and severe asthma, leading to him not expected to live very long, he has to wear a neckbrace and do medication to ease the pain from headbangin while drumming insanely fast, my personal favourite is X Japan - Kurenai ( Last Live ) which was their last concert at the time, few months later their guitarist died.

The table harp is called the KOTO, the drums are Taiko, the flute is the Daisuke (I think). And NINJA jump? Really? LMAO. The Shamisen you got right mostly, typically in Japanese, the I is pronounced as an "ee" sound. At least that's what I've experienced in Japan.

If I can recommend something great, I don't know that you like Limp Bizkit, but is ukrainian pagan/folk metal band Свентояр (Sventoyar) and their recorded cover version of Limp Bizkit song "Boiler", music part is from "Boiler", but lyrics are from ukrainian folk song. This cover have title "Крашен Вечiр" (Krashen Vechir) and it's just amazing. It have official music video. Can you react this one?
