    I believe the original intention for this knife was for hunting. The hunting blade of the Fox River with the longer more comfortable handle of the Gunny. I love mine. It's a keeper!

  • @DutchBushcraftKnives
    @DutchBushcraftKnives Před 6 lety +15

    thats a pretty darn sexy knife. I love the gunny handle Especially with liners.
    I wonder though... the blade shape looks amazing for hunting purpose the gunny handle though is less suitable for hunting purpose.

      Dutch Bushcraft Knives How so? And what would you recommend? For other tasks, is this one ideal? I'm really looking for an all-around EDC fixed blade. I think I've settled on this one, though it's pretty pricey for my budget.

      The gunny handle is the greatest for hunting purposes, no idea where you guys came up with that!

      @tylerwalsh9020 Před 5 lety +2

      the handle on this fox river is the EXACT same as the gunny.

    • @tylerwalsh9020
      @tylerwalsh9020 Před 5 lety

      I picked the original fox river for a hunting and skinning knife because of the different handle shape. The blade shapes are identical and that's what matters for hunting/ skinning. I think handle shape is 100% personal preference.

    I can certainly appreciate a good knife and at the prices these companies charge, there should be absolutely no complaints from anyone for any reason. If I could dump thousands into knives, no doubt I would have some of these but since I'm just an average Joe, I have to go quite a bit cheaper. I've taken vacations that didn't cost as much as some of these knives. That said, I almost miss the days when I could come here and watch a daily Schrade commercial simply because many of them I could afford. Those days are gone.
    I've got a decent selection of knives, none of which cost over $50 or so and I have to say, they do exactly what they were intended to do, they cut. I like the fact that, not only do I not have to take out a second mortgage to buy one, but many of them are available to me in a store near my home. As far as quality, of course they won't match most of the knives you review. The fit and finish might leave something to be desired and the sheaths might not be the highest quality, but I notice that you resheath many of your knives anyway, but I keep them shaving sharp and I would dare say that they will cut anything that the high dollar knives will cut once I've sharpened them to my satisfaction.
    I'd love to have some of these beautiful blades but until I hit the lottery, I can't afford to skip a house payment to buy one. I'd really like to see less of the boutique knives that I will never be able to actually hold and more of the average Joe stuff that falls within the realm of possibility for a guy like me. I doubt that will happen but, there are many review channels out there that do offer just that. Like I said, I have no doubt the quality of these knives is top shelf. At their prices, I would be highly pissed if they were anything other than perfectly flawless. I'm going to unsub, not because of any moral or ethical issues, but because there's no reason for me to watch videos of an endless string of basically identical knives that I will never be able to own. Having said that, you do what you do and keep on trucking. Nothing personal, I just don't see a reason to keep watching and wanting without ever getting. Take care and good luck in the future.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  Před 6 lety +1

      Jason Blame Schrade for that. I do still even buy myself some knives that are affordable that I like that are budget. There just aren't that many of them. I just reviewed the Cold Steel SRK that was under $50. I got the new Garberg coming up. And there's some that I cannot source for reviews that I have to buy, and believe it or not I'm not made of money either. And do you think I'm going to keep using something much after review when I have my own designs?
      Two that I'm purchasing soon JUST to review them are the CRKT Humdinger ($55) and the Ka-Bar Jarosz Turok ($100). I just got the Kizer Salient which is about $110.
      I can't be all things to all people and all budgets. IMO, reviews are more valuable on the pricier knives because you need as much data as possible to decide whether or not to spend that money. Schrade's quality control went to shit and their new direction appears to be cheap crap whereas it used to be them striving to make better stuff. And they know it too, which is why you don't see them on CZcams anymore because reviewers will expose that like I did.
      Just don't watch a video if it doesn't apply to what you want. It's that simple. You want a GOOD budget chopper? Kershaw Camp 10. Knife? Cold Steel SRK, Mora Kansbol or Garberg, etc.
      But I'm a knife designer that appreciates the best quality when it comes to knives. And there aren't that many budget knives pouring into the market I'm confident about that I can get my hands on. I can't do what people actually ask me sometimes to do... Go buy everything before them to review so THEY can decide whether or not to buy it. That doesn't seem fair. And every review isn't a suggestion that YOU need it.

    • @Jason-jd1jv
      @Jason-jd1jv Před 6 lety +2

      I owe you an apology. You made some great points and you are correct. You know, I never thought about the fact that more expensive knives should be reviewed more in depth since cheaper ones aren't going to break the bank if they suck. I'm ashamed of my comments and I hope you'll accept my apology. I've subscribed again and again, I feel terrible for behaving the way I did. You are absolutely correct and my unfair comments were completely undeserved. Thank you for taking the time to respond and set me straight. Sometimes we need to be taken down a peg when we get out of line and I definitely got out of line. Again, I hope that you will accept my apology. Take care Chris. I'll keep watching with fresh new eyes.

    @seanoindaugherty308 Před 6 lety

    I was really waiting for the explanation ofwhat it is that is different with this model compared to the original fox river, but luckily some folks in the comments cleared that up for everyone. For a guy sponsored by Bark River, it doesn't seem like you know a whole lot about the majority of their knives.

    • @seanoindaugherty308
      @seanoindaugherty308 Před 6 lety

      "The Fox River EXT-1 is a brand new version of the Fox River. Jason Thoune of DLT Trading had the idea of combining the handle of the Gunny with the blade of the Fox River. It was and is a great idea. The result is a great knife that handles very well and is absolutely the right size for most outdoor and hunting tasks. The Gunny handle is actually more secure in the hand for a lot of people with it's self guard and the Fox River Blade has been our most popular hunting style knife since it was first introduced in 2004. Introducing this new model in CPM 3V at 60RC with a spine thickness of .156" makes this a very hard knife to beat."
      -From DLT

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  Před 6 lety

      Ummm... Do you know how many knives they have? "Sponsored by" does not equate to "Sales rep". Knives go up all the time that I'm not even aware of. Case in point: the FOBOS Legion. I saw that one on DLT and bought it myself. They sponsor me because I do sensible reviews and tests and I design for them (they are the primary maker of my designs). I don't even review every Bark River they send sometimes. Why? Because I don't LIKE every Bark River they send. Nothing has changed. I still only do the stuff I'm interested in. And I have never owned a Fox River. Same thing with LTWK. I design for them too, but don't like everything they make, which is why you won't find every model reviewed. I'm sponsored because they like my work. I want to sell the knives I like, but I ALSO work for my VIEWERS. There's a balance. If my reviews aren't accurate and people buy something that doesn't live up to what I told them, then the whole house of cards collapses.
      Now if I OWNED a Fox River, then yeah, I would've compared them. I didn't even think I would actually even like this knife. But I did, so it got a video.

    • @seanoindaugherty308
      @seanoindaugherty308 Před 6 lety

      I'm pretty obsessive about their knives, which may or may not be a bad thing, and would think of you to be as knowledgeable if not more than myself, considering your profession and relationship to them. The knife world is nit picky, and I don't wanna be "that guy", but the coolest thing about this knife is that it's a Fox River with a Gunny handle, which was never mentioned despite it being a super crucial detail of the knife being reviewed.
      Sorry if I come off rude; I do aim to be constructive.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  Před 6 lety

      Most people aren't going to know that anyway. Bark River has a billion knives and many look similar on the surface. I've had a Gunny but that was two years ago. Never had a Fox River.

    I’m debating between getting the EXT-1 , the Bushcrafter and Aurora. At some point I’d like to have and try all three for working around a fire.. Things like batoning smaller pieces of wood, feather sticking, and also a little carving, as I have a larger knife for batoning larger pieces of wood. It’s come down to these three knives, but I haven’t tried any of them yet, and I’d love your opinion on which you would prefer for this purpose as well as type of steel and grind. Thanks so much 🙏

    • @HarisBabic
      @HarisBabic Před 3 lety

      @wb emus I just preordered a Bushcrafter Cruwear that DLT is advertising. I was leaning towards 3V (I think), but I've heard a lot of great things about Cruwear too so I just went for it. The only thing is I have no idea what the timeline is for this production which kind of stinks but hopefully it won't be 2021 haha Also they don't tell us what the grind is going to be. I guess we'll see.

    • @HarisBabic
      @HarisBabic Před 3 lety

      @wb emus I def see that, I've been looking everywhere. And yeah, heard the same thing about Cruwear. I've also heard a lot of people prefer it over the 3V as the lower toughness doesn't seem to be noticable to them. Maybe that's why BR chose to only make Cruwear this time. But I agree with you- who knows.. I sort of hoped I'd have the option to choose steel and grind but I'm also pretty excited about Cruwear so it should be ok. Also as a first time buyer, some handles are hard to tell how they actually look bc when I compare a certain type and color of handle across different knives, I found the look of handles inconsistent- especially the 2 toned micartas. I chose the black linen, although I saw a few photos that I liked with green handles but I didn't have the exact details of handle so I wasn't sure if it they were just the green colored ones or the black & green bc they both look pretty green in most cases. But some of the green looked too strange for my taste and I didn't like how they looked so I just played it safe with black.

    • @HarisBabic
      @HarisBabic Před 3 lety

       @wb emus hey brother, thanks for your feedback. It's wild how much one can learn like this. There are so many great people out here with experience and it's great to be able to ask questions. I wasn't considering the Bravo as it looked bulkier but I hadn't thought of the LT version which I see now it's not a big difference from the Aurora. So I'm pretty excited to check it out again for sure. But yeah, as far as the steel I was looking at the EXT-1 in S45VN and almost snatched it the other day, however, I'm not completely set on the steel itself yet. I'm sure S45VN is great, but right now I think I'd prefer something in 3V or Cruwear. I see Aurora still has some great options in both steels and I'm gonna check it out again along with the Bravo for sure. Thanks again!

    • @HarisBabic
      @HarisBabic Před 3 lety

      @wb emus yeah I’m seeing the itch myself to get more than one lol but I can also see how in subtle ways these tools are pervading into my life and becoming my teachers. So I’m conflicted haha do I scratch the itch and see what’s hiding or monitor it lol but as you suggested, I’ve been looking at the different handles with the Bravo and there are so many. I’d love to get a wooden one as they do look incredible but they do require a certain amount of attention so for a first or second knife, it’s probably best I get something less prone to damage. I’ll let you know if I get anything. keep me posted with whatever good comes along. All the best brother !! 🙏

    Hey Chris,question for you-where do you find one with a “Plain Blade”? I can find them with the Matt Finish, but I’ve not found a Plain blade. Thanks, Doc Bates

    • @strongbear9304
      @strongbear9304 Před 6 lety

      Okay, looking back I may have not have expressed myself the best in my first question. When looking at the website to order a Fox River EXT-1 all I could find are the EXT-1 knives with MATT Finish on the Blades. The one you are using has a Blade that appears to have no Matt Finish or any kind of Treated or Coated finish . Were you able to purchase it that way or did you have to remove any applied finish. I prefer a blade that is not coated with finishes that are "Plain " Blade

      I don't understand. There's no costing on Bark Rivers. Unless you are talking about how polished it is? It's like every other Bark River I own...

    • @mrq1701
      @mrq1701 Před 4 lety

      "matte finish" refers to the handle scales, usually micarta, not the blade. If you don't see "matte finish", then the micarta is polished and shiny.

      Bohler is harder to get stuff from than Crucible. Carpenter isn't bothering with knife companies anymore I was told. So bye bye CTS-XHP.

      PREPAREDMIND101 that sucks for CT’s Xhp I hate that cold steel is using s35vn it’s such a downgrade from xhp but anything’s better then aus 8 still wish they switched to something better

    I like this knife, looks great , I prefer Scandi knives for woodwork and all around outdoor knife Like my LT Wright Genesis and Sospes . However it is nice to see this knife can do those things too, The EXT -1 looks like a perfect size EDC use knife for urban use not too big or too small . For cutting tasks and food prep this knife will work great. There is no knife that will do everything perfect , My Bark river Bird and trout is a super slicer for food prep and fish and light cutting of rope and fishing line but that is where it ends for my use. Even so it does most cutting and slicing for what I need outdoors . Scandi is specific for woodwork and not the best for cutting meat or food prep but it can be done . So I use more than one knife outdoors in the woods and other knives like the Fox river EXT-1 would be great for urban use . I also think the Lion steel M4 is a great EDC and woods knife in M390 super steel , which will match 3V in toughness if not better and at $155.00 it is a bargain and high quality knife.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  Před 6 lety

      Hmmm. I like the grind angle of the Bravo-1 better. I'm better with it. This one is slicier. Both are J-Listed.

    • @brandonb6327
      @brandonb6327 Před 6 lety

      Bob Wampler I have both. This is a tough decision. Main reason I love the EXT is it's a lot easier to carry for virtually the same size blade. I have the kydex sheath and can pocket carry the EXT. If you have really large hands go Bravo 1.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  Před 6 lety

      Depends on depth. If it's Schrade, you can lie it in the sidewalk and jump your bike off it. Cold Steel SRK is hollow ground and it's fine.

    • @bp-hx9ts
      @bp-hx9ts Před 6 lety

      PREPAREDMIND101 I haven’t had much experience with cold steel hollow grinds but what I have had with other companies I had terrible experiences with a buck fixed blade I had chipped out horribly from me cutting thru wood and cardboard don’t know which it chip out on and no experience with sharade ether I dislike what they did to your jess x design so I stopped even looking at them ever since they where bought out they have been ruining designs
