Over here, our boots are the classic black. Not all leather, now it's mostly a leather/gore-tex mix. When the boots get dirty with mud, dust etc we spray water, put on a coat of kiwi and call it a day.

Better use natural green soap which contains glycerine. In that way the leather won't be damaged by the synthetic detergent.
Never let leather shoes dry in the sun or heat source! It may damage the leather due to drying to quick!
Instead, add kitchen-, toilet-, or newspaper. Leave the boots dry at room temperature for 24 hours. And change the paper towel every 2 to 3 hour!
After 24 hours the boots will still be a bit moist. Good. Rub the surface with a soft brush and spray with a water resistant repellent.
After two days the boots are dry. Now your can spray or wax them.

If they are old and it's from sweat and body oils then pull your insole, soak in a good mix of warm water and Dawn for 24 hours then rinse. Use kiwi saddle soap follow it up with kiwi mink oil if you like. I have a pair that I wore for three deployments. Got out in 09 and they sat up. Needed a pair for SWAT so I turned to them and that's what I did to get mine back to like new.

Why are you cleaning your boots before going to the field? And this way of cleaning them only shortens the life of the boot. You should use a suede brush and a cleaner designed for suede, or for those that don’t want to spend the money, use a mix of white vinegar and corn flour.

If your uniform is not noticeably dirty you can use lysol™ spray or febreeze™ on your utilities/ACUs so they smell fresh and you can reduce now much abuse they usually face if you wash them every weekend, so this snould make them last longer, unless they are always soiled, then cold water permanent press cycle and mild detergent, and low heat or drip dry.
