Find After Find Mudlarking the Thames BUT Can you See What I Missed? (I Bet You Can't!!) May 2024

  • It's only when I watched the footage that I spotted something I missed! But Can You? I walked right over it. I bet you can't :). What a bumper day on the Thames mudlarking with Oscar Potter, the Otter Mudlark. Also, I find something - my favourite find of the day, that I have restored by my friend Christine. What do you think of the transformation?
As always thank you for watching and don't forget that if you want to try mudlarking you have to have a permit from the Port of London Authority.
    See you Soon.
    Love Nicola xxx

Oscar would be perfectly cast as Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice, so very handsome and charming. Christine is so talented, and delightful, I find so many sad old brooches in antique stores in need of her skills. I follow The Chelsea Flower Show from my home here in Michigan, and all of Great Britain seems to have had a very wet spring. We've had a classic spring here, just the right amount of rain and sun, so my rose garden is exploding into bloom. I have two Lady Emma Hamilton roses, but I think I'll rename one of them after you, the blooms suit you, and you should have a rose of your own, for all the joy and comfort you bring us.

It is a toy gun mechanism, the pin in the circular chamber is for a roll of "caps" and the pawl is the mechanism that pulls the caps under the hammer to make the bang! Good find!

I seriously *love* seeing all the fun and curious things you find on the shore. But another big reason why I enjoy your videos so much, is your kindness. 💖The way you feed the sweet critters that show up on your window sill. The way you appreciate all the beautiful wildlife you see during your outings. And the way you always wish everyone watching a wonderful time and remind us to do things we enjoy. Your find of the live bullet (looks like a 9mm parabellum) reminded me of a bit of trivia. During the war, the Army were testing prototypes for what would become the De Lisle carbine, a shortened commando rifle with an integral supressor. It became one of the quietest firearms ever made and, remarkably, it was tested by firing into the Thames from the roof of the New Adelphi building, and gauging whether passers-by heard the shots. None did. Not sure they'd get away with that now!

Hi Nicola, I live in Wiltshire near the Dents factory, there were many glovers here about back in the day. Many of my friends and neighbours Mums and Grannies were out-workers, stitching the soft leather at home to boost the family's income. Glove making is much more complicated than you would imagine, the local history society occasionally has talks on the subject.

My week last week was a bit crazy. I’m in Garland Texas and that is Northeast of Dallas. We had some bad thunderstorms and a tornado went right over us. So lucky we only lost a big limb out of a tree. We were without power for 2 days and some are just now getting power. My daughter and I drove around the town there were enormous trees uprooted and went through roofs of houses. The damage was very widespread. Just glad we are all ok. Thanks for this nice video, I need a pipe next time! lol

Great job, Christine, on the restorations!! Love when something is given new life!! The kitty reminds me of my 8 kitties who raid my craft room which is located on the 3rd floor. They bring me 'presents' all the time, like a piece of ribbon, or elastic, or yarn (their favorite)! They once unraveled a ball of yarn by bringing it down the stairs from the 3rd floor to the first! Take care, Nicola! God bless!

I love all your fines that you had today and I really enjoy when we are asked to look for something that you’ve seen in the mud!! I noticed that you didn’t find one pipe, I love those pipes!!
I did do a Google pictures search, and this was the closest model that I came up to for the gun. It’s called a Marlin Safety Model 1892 Receiver. It seems to be around that timeframe that these guns were being made, and they all have something in common with each other by the looks of it.
It was great meeting your friend. I tried to get a picture of the glue she used for her bead work. I had a vintage purse and on the handle part there was some stones missing, but the lady had them in a small envelope in the purse so I took out some glue and I proceeded to attach the baby blue gems. When I put them into their spot where the glue was waiting for it and here the gem turned dark and I don’t know why it did that, so I’m hoping the glue that your friend used, I could find it on Amazon because I have several other things that need fixing, but I don’t want to chance it by ruining it.
Thank you for another great video Nicola have a great week!!🌊🐬

I love buying beat-up brooches/pins at yard sales and “fixing” them. I don’t have the Mayans to enamel so I mix powder pigments into epoxy and use that as enamel.

I find that Nicola's switch to vertical stripes ||| is nicely figure-enhancing!
The "Winchester Rifle" mechanism is for a toy cap gun. The "caps" were little blobs of suitable explosive on a narrow roll of paper, which was advanced by the mechanism for something like a hundred shots a roll. This actually evolved from a priming mechanism for an (American) Civil War-era muzzle-loading carbine for grown-ups, which replaced individual loaded metal percussion caps with a similar roll with a number of caps on it. This was less fiddle than the metal caps, but not very weatherproof (paper!) and it didn't address the main issue, which was loading the main charge of gunpowder and a ball, ready to be fired by the cap. I did once see a roll of caps for the actual carbine and it differed from toy-gun caps in being wider, the blobs of priming compound were much bigger (made a much louder bang and a bigger flash, which was the actual point) and there were also sprocket holes in the paper so the roll advanced in a much more controlled fashion. This item fell into the hands of a school friend whose father often went on business trips to the USA and tried to buy "rolls of caps" in a real gunshop! The toy gun caps sometimes went bang because of the (friction) advance mechanism rather than the hammer that was supposed to set them off, so it's easy to see why the rolls of caps for real military carbines had sprocket holes!
Amongst Oscar's finds is a "pinfire" revolver cartridge, which is a few years later than the rolls of caps but not very many years later. Pinfire cartridges were invented as a way of converting existing percussion-lock guns to breech loaders, because they work by the hammer coming *down* onto the pin sticking up. The pinfire system rapidly fell out of favour for large rifles and shotguns because it was possible to set the cartridge off, outside the gun, by accident if it was dropped and the pin hit something, or if it just got knocked whilst in someone's pocket. The heavier the cartridge, the more likely such an accidental ignition was, and the worse the consequences because black powder actually explodes and a goose-gun cartridge had a lot of powder in it. Pinfire revolvers were popular in Europe and made in vast numbers in Belgium. Nearly all pinfire revolver cartridges have a metric designation in whole millimetres from 6mm to 11mm. My best guess is that Oscar's cartridge is an 8mm, but it might be a 9mm. (It probably has a single numeral on the base of the cartridge saying what it is.) The rival rimfire and centrefire systems prevailed because they were safer, and it later turned out that making smokeless pinfire ammunition was more or less impossible because the pin goes directly into the cup of an internal priming cap, and smokeless powder needs a much stronger explosion from the cap to get the powder burning and that might even drive the pin out of the cartridge. In any case, there was always a bit of gas leakage around the pin, even with blackpowder, and that's why the pin is always pointing up and away from the shooter's hands and face when it is fired.
Nicola's small cartridge looked like a .32" ACP (aka 7.65mm Browning) to me and this was introduced with the 1903 Colt Pocket Hammerless model, which is a direct descendant of the 1902 Colt "sporting model" pistol which she found in a recent video. John Browning also designed a much bigger 1903 model for FN which was closer to the 1902 model in size and power, but was a "hammerless" (there is a hammer, but it's inside the slide and can't catch on anything) design like the 1903 Colt. Colt had a licence to sell his designs in the Americas, FN (where he mostly worked) sold his gun designs almost everywhere else.

Sundays are always better with a video or 2 from my favorite mudlarkers, you and Simon. What a group of glorious birds you have now with your restored brooches. Christine did an amazing job. The coins were very nice and thank you for sharing the stories of not only your interesting treasures but Oscar's as well. Have a great week!

Watching Christine inserting new stones in the cockerel brooch reminded me of my Mum who used to make jewellery many years ago. She would buy the mounts and all the stones at a wonderful craft shop in Wallingford, spend hours in the evening sticking stones into the mounts and then selling them on her stall at local craft fairs.
