  • Why is Africa poor?
    --------
Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: www.johnstosse...
    ---------
More than half of the world's poorest people live in sub-Saharan Africa.
Why? Why is that region so poor? There are lots of theories -- some blame a "colonial history." Others blame the weather or discrimination.
But Magatte Wade, an African entrepreneur, tells John Stossel that she knows the biggest reason from her own first-hand experience: it’s crushing government regulation.
"Once you hire someone, good luck getting rid of them for any reason," she says. Her home country, Senegal, requires government permission to fire an employee. That makes it hard to run a business. It also makes entrepreneurs reluctant to hire.
Then there's the complicated tax code.
"Some people say it's worth at least two or three truckloads of paper," she says. Hiring an accountant to wade through that is expensive for new businesses.
Magatte started a business anyway -- she makes lip balm. She has to import several ingredients that are not made in Senegal.
"Some of them have a 70 percent import tariff on them!" Wade complains.
High taxes and complex rules often lead to corruption, because people pay bribes to get around the rules. Wade says corruption "a natural consequence of stupid senseless idiot laws... the only way to fix corruption is to simplify."
Wade's business survives without corruption, she says. One reason is that she was fortunate to find a bureaucrat who helped her find a way around the ruinous tariffs.
"We found a clause in one of the binders saying actually if you're exporting at least 80 percent of your products and if you've been in business for two years then you can ask for an exemption," she said.
Well-meaning westerners often try to help Africa with aid. Tom's Shoes gives a pair of shoes to someone in the developing world for every pair customers buy. But Wade points out that such donations destroy local African shoe makers.
Instead of aid, she says, demand that rules be cut. That would create jobs.
"If I have a job then, guess what?" Wade asks. "My malnutrition problem goes poof! My uneven access to clean water goes poof. It’s just poof, poof, poof!"
“Create greater economic freedom... in all countries," Wade concludes. "So that all people everywhere get a chance to experience free enterprise."

If you give a handout, it helps them only in the short-term, but never resolves the long-term or underlying problems to help them get off the drugs, off the streets, into employment, and into a house. Africa needs to be able to exploit it's own resources. That means it needs entrepreneurs and leaders. It needs capital that they earned (not a handout). It needs a self-sustaining growth model. It can never have that when rich people are handing out billions to a small handful of government officials - this woman describes exactly what happens. Most of it is stolen and diverted to well-connected people, and the stuff that does arrive outcompetes any homegrown business.
Handouts are always a path to sustained poverty. Look at an American Indian reservation, or the urban inner city ghetto or barrio, or the rural trailer park. Dependence breeds further dependence.

And that's why crooks are able to convince ignoramuses that it's going to solve all their troubles and make them wealthy living on easy street.
As the woman in this video points out, these labyrinthian rules simply create fertile grounds for the corrupt to benefit via bribery, influence-peddling, and grifting on a large scale. To everyone's surprise, he blamed Yuri Andropov's crackdown on widespread corruption. What Andropov hadn't understood, according to this colonel who had served under him, was that corruption was the only thing holding the Soviet system together. Corruption allowed black markets to flourish, and black markets were the only free markets, the only place where you could buy decent boots, tractor parts that worked, and modern personal computers. Even state industries depended on black markets for reliable electricity, adequate fuel supplies, quality rebar, and timely road repair. When Andropow made the Soviet Union live with it's actual policies enforced, it collapsed. When your rules are irrational, you depend on rule-breakers for your survival.

For example, if you can't even start a small business because some country flies in 100 tons of rice when you were supplying the ppl with it they've just destroyed a business. They've destroyed the person's ability to make money, the business and trade between farmer and person selling rice (or whatever), and the many other things that come from ppl being able to trade with each other both locally and across the continent.

I know a church that taught a business class so that people would know how to start a business, price things effectively, and market their business. There was once a wealthy entrepreneur who started really helping people. What was happening in the country is that it only cost a few hundred dollars to start a business in a particular country, but banks would only loan large amounts of money. So he started "Penny Loans" where he only loaned that few hundred dollars that could easily be paid back with interest by the borrower. People don't like him because he made millions off of the loans, but no one ever talks about the number of people who were helped because of him loaning them amounts they could actually afford to pay back.

@Max Bridges> Yes, the MSM went near these stories. In fact, Stossel used to have a program of this nature on Faux News, until it was canceled due to poor ratings. I guess people got tired of his constant bashing of the government, even Faux News viewers who are used to this sort of propaganda. He used to pick on some law or regulation, and then blow it out of proportion just to prove his point and promote his agenda. I used to wonder where he went when he left Fox. I guess I have found the answer. In Africa promoting his hatred of government. If there is one thing Africa needs, it is good governance, reduction in corruption, and enforcing the rule of law. Fewer rules and all these countries will turn into Somalia where there is no government, and sea piracy runs rampant.

The problem is there were tribal conflicts and locals fighting over valuable resources, then Europeans and the Middle-Easterners played off that for their own gain. All that's needed is a more widespread good work ethnic, less government corruption and resolution of tribal conflicts and the countries of Africa could thrive; if they did this and united like the U.S. then Africa could become a superpower.

They want everyone addicted to freebies. "Free" college means they control what is taught and what you learn (just like in the public schools, which is why they are so against charter schools). "Free" medical care means they control your health and decide when you are no longer needed (die). What they really want is to revert back to 14th century Europe. They are the kings and queens with their chosen ones in court, and the rest of the world works to keep them happy. Thanks to the subsidies, the European farmer can afford to sell his wheat in Africa at a very low price, much lower than the African farmer can afford. There's also the problem that we have here in the states....Poor people don't have money to invest and there's just no value to be made even if they did. For example...I have an idea to open up an Air Conditioning business somewhere in Africa. It's hot there. Who wouldn't like air conditioning? AND there's virtually no competition there. Great.
I open up my shop and instantly run into problems....1. There are no local factories that manufacture air conditioner units, parts or stacks so I would have to import a huge supply otherwise any job I get would take ages to do because I'd always be waiting for supplies to be shipped to me to get the jobs done. Any contractor will tell ya...they like to only buy what they need as they need.
Problem 2. There are no customers. Nobody would know about my business because advertising doesn't exist. Those people don't have TV's and billboards and catalogs etc...
Problem 3. Even if they knew of me, wanted a/c they couldn't afford it. I would have to charge a minimum of x for the parts and costs of keeping my business running PLUS I wouldn't be just doing it for my health. I would want to make a reasonable profit. Then my money would be spent towards the economy of others business's. That's how economics work.
If there's no money or value circulating "like blood needs circulating in a body to live" then your country is essentially dead.
