2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Review - The Ultimate Sleeper? (470 Horsepower!)

  • Today we are reviewing a gorgeous and powerful vehicle, the 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8. Nowadays when I talk about the Chrysler 300, everybody complains about how Chrysler has left the car for dead, without any major improvements since 2015, and without the SRT model in North America since 2014. This car is a reminder of better days for the 300, with the big 6.4L Hemi V8 engine under the hood. In this review, we'll take a deeper look at this beautiful car and going into all the nooks and crannies of the vehicle and what makes the SRT8 so unique and impressive.
    Huge thanks to my subscriber Josh for giving me the opportunity to drive and review his car!
    The 300 was released for the first-gen from 2005-2010, then returned for the second gen in 2011. The 300 always received an SRT8 model that matched the Charger and Challenger, first the 6.1L Hemi in that first-gen, then the upgraded 6.4L Hemi. The 300 SRT8 actually debuted in 2012, so this is the first year this car was available. Back in 2012, the base 300 began at $27,670, the S V6 moved up to $36,020, while the SRT8 was the top dawg in the lineup in terms of both luxury and performance, with a price tag of $47,670 before any options. So the price is steep, but you get a lot of car for the money.

      I bought my 2013 300 SRT8 back in early 2016. I do a fair amount of travel and while I have seen or looked at 2012-2014 300 SRTs on a dealer lot, I have yet to see another one in person out in the wild. Of course, I see numerous Chargers and Challengers (SRT). I had no idea how rare it was until after I bought it.

    That car is amazing. I may think the rims on the older one looks bigger even though they’re the same size, think it’s an illusion because the older one has more spokes. It would be hard to choose between this and the older srt8, but I’d still go for the older one, it looks more aggressive, and I do have childhood bias, my parents owned a 07 300c and it was sweet

    Great video mate. I love your focus on Mopars, and that you give the 300 SRTs some attention.
    I had a 2013 300 SRT8 and absolutely loved it, but after a couple of years I upgraded to a 2016 300 SRT. I love it too.
    It takes the (2012 - 2014) 300 SRT8 and turns it up to 11.
    More functionality in the SRT Pages, 8 spd auto trans, ACC that goes all the way down to a stop, slightly more agressive front and rear bumpers, better SRT seats, newer SRT steering wheel design, but still holding on to that stealth look and everything else that was great about the previous model.
    I love the heated/cooled seats, heated wheel, heated/cooled front cup holders, and the 900 watt 19 spkr HK audio is awesome.
    Even simple things like the capless fuel filler is awesome.
    Probably the only things missing that I'd like are a fully powered opening/closing boot (trunk), Head Up Display, and an electronic park brake.
    But that's about it.
    And now they've stopped selling them new here in Australia too..!! So sad.
    Best car i've ever owned.
    Cheers...

    Instead of discontinuing the Chrysler 300, Stellantis should be expanding the line with a 300 coupe and convertible . This would give Chrysler two models with no Dodge equivalents and would boost sales. Currently, there are no convertibles in the Dodge or Chrysler lineups, and no luxury/ convertibles currently available from ANY American manufacturer…so the 300 would have that market all to itself…as a successor to the long-running LeBaron and Sebring Convertibles . They could even COMBINE a coupe and convertible 300 into ONE retractable hardtop coupe/convertible model. A rear-wheel-drive, Hemi V-8 powered 300 convertible would go a long way towards building the 300’s image…and and serving as a “halo” car for Chrysler as well.(A 300 Hemi C Convertible was actually planned for production by Chrysler, around 2000, but was nixed by Daimler, who owned Chrysler Corporation at the time).

      Like you, I have a 2013 300 SRT8 and the launch mode feature is there. It isn't a menu option, you activate it with the ESC or traction control button (can't remember which). I remember watching a video from someone on the SRT team (probably back in 2016 when I got it). In truth, I hope you don't find it, new tires are expensive these days! When I go out the next time, i will give it a try and post what I did to activate it.
      Also, in relation to the video, one of the things I did on my mine was add a Flowmaster catback exhaust. The "active" exhaust system had a valve fail and the dealer actually suggested doing a catback instead of fixing the issue which would have been twice as much. Just in case anyone does that, you will likely want to do an MDS delete/disable as well - it just didn't sound right once MDS kicked in. I used a Diablo I3 tuner for that - in truth, I should have bought that when I got the car. Both of those items together came in well under just the Mopar part cost. My worry when I did it was that it would become less of a sleeper, in some ways it has, but I much prefer the new sound. In my opinion after doing the 93 Octane Tune, Sport mode became standard, Track became sport, and Track mode became something much more aggressive.

    • @hcdata4289
      @hcdata4289 Před 2 lety

      Over the weekend I looked into this. You hit the ESC button twice which is next to the rear defroster button. That is it, you should now see launch control enabled in your instrument cluster on the digital screen. Follow instructions from there.

    Instead of discontinuing the 300 SRT, perhaps Chrysler could have kept it in the catalog, building one whenever an order was placed. I also wonder how much, if at all, was the 300 SRT marketed? Was it the standard FCA approach of "we don't know how to market it" like they did with the Charger R/T AWD?

    • @MarspeedCars
      @MarspeedCars  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree with this and have been saying it for years. Build to order. They would have got a few and probably would have gotten some decent attention on social media like that Hellcats did. The 300 itself hasn’t been marketed for years, let alone the SRT. So I think not enough attention spent on it. It’s possible that FCA just spent all the marketing on Ram and Jeep which are the huge volume sellers. Same thing goes for the R/T AWD too yeah!

    i just got the 2023 300C! it's a rear wheel drive beast with 485hp and 475tq! quarter throttle and the rears break traction. it does have a dated interior but the price tag makes it acceptable... $58k. the car is an SRT but it is only evident when the infotainment display first comes on. i'm lucky to get one of only 2200 "C" models were made for 2023 the final year for the 300.

      Yes you are right about the Durango (and Jeep SRT was too). Challenger has never had a V8 AWD car (just 3.6L V6 AWD) and Charger last V8 AWD was the 2014 R/T (never SRT) along with the newer V6s!

    Hey boss, i happen to have the brother of that car, the Dodge Charger SRT8 2012, Toured color scheme, fully equipped. I did some upgrades, but i maintained it's original looks, like i put a cold air intake, high flow resonators, forged pistons, replaced the original needle bearings and put a ZF 8HP70 transmission from the SXT, but aesthetic wise i changed nothing. I made it pump 550hp on the wheels and 585hp on the crank, if you are interested in reviewing it, i can make a small* trip to Canada...

      @@MarspeedCars looking somewhere with a economy that isn't screwed, you know, imagine having to pay 350k on a SRT8... sadly maintaining this car is EXTREMELY expensive, we do have some FCA dealerships and Mopar assistance services, but all parts that are not shared with the Journey have to be imported... so yeah. Chrysler and Dodge are regarded as premium, rich people only brands, evan the old Neon is expensive, so basically, if it has leather seats its for the wealth. Well, since my English is good enough i might as well go to either Canada or USA
