Does my very first cassette recorder from the 70s, made in Poland, qualify? Was mono, had no extras, and worked for years. Later on I got s so called Geracord, which was the data storage device for my U880 home computer KC85. Btw, still having some Home Computers out of the GDR, and they still work.
It definitely ended up in the best place possible. Thanks for getting it all sorted out.
Why your channel isn't verified yet? :/
Nice announcement on the loop 😀
Loved the collab!
I always suspected "Matt" was just a pseudonym. lol
This really is the best tribute to the old bit of kit.
Hah, an unexpected but groovy crossover!
it was inevitable !
Look Techmoan no computer. I love it when my worlds come together!
Very neat!
But... But... This channel is specially about no computers! 😀
Pre 2000 allowed Jako haha
Yeah, bugger that No Computer stuff. I'm sure 8-Bit guy could create a small PIC board to emulate all functions of that room of wire mess, allowing tape player to work as a stand-alone device on display.
@@aleksandrbmelnikov it works without all that mess anyways?
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER You need at least one phone on outside of display case, for visitors to enjoy and understand context of how message player was once used. Thankfully, we live in age when this can be accomplished in smaller form factor with less wasted electric.
The "you're not supposed to do it like that" part really had me rolling, really captured the energy of "that guy".
I can't believe this! A LMNC+Techmoan collaboration! The Universe just got like 43,8% better!
why do people use commas instead of decimals. It's like using F* in your report when the whole world uses and expects C*
Imagine if I said 43,898% is different than 43.898% one says fourtythree-thousand-eighthundred-ninetyeight and the other still just 43%
@@Wtfinc in my country we use commas for decimals. I hope you don't lose more sleep over that because I'm going to keep using commas and the metric system too.
@@nunofernandes4501 ill be up for days
@@Wtfinc oh gosh, you missed the apostrophe and the capital "i" in "I'll", it reads "ill" as in "sick" or "unwell". Now it is I who won't be able to sleep.
@@nunofernandes4501 mind. blown. Thank you for your service EX122.989.112.0.4A, we count on you!
Loved it,
The "complain" voice used when cutting the tape sounded just like Photonicinduction when he is aggravated;)
hahaha not intended but it sorta does haha
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER Andy (I think his name is) doesn't respond well to back-seat drivers, so definitely fitting (even if it was accidental).
Next time I'm in the UK I will be sure to visit the museum. It looks so much fun.
Thats what i tbought!
oh......I popped it
Reminded me of Harry Enfield "You Don't Want To Do It Like That" character.
"No you're not supposed to do it like that, you're supposed to do it like this!" "No you're not supposed to do it like this, you're supposed to do it like that!"
ONLY MEEEE
LMNC x Techmoan 👍
When you opened that thing, I could immediately smell it. That crunchy slightly smokey plastic smell...
Mmmmm. I remember that smell.
Slight hint of bakelite.
That heady mix of magic smoke and bakelite.
That warm fuzzy feeling all over might be cancer but who cares!
Weird to think that we can somehow remember a smell and it fondly reminds me of watching and helping my grandad fix various things. I'm off now to burn some resistors etc to try and jog some memories lol.
I'm old so I know that smell.
The most anticipated collaboration since philips and sony!
phony...
weird, i was specifically thinking while watching techmoan's video of this device 'this belongs in LMNC's museum' then it actually happens. wut
Yeah, it's the same feeling when you think up something nonsense, Google it, and you have an impression that the universe is probably creating the very thing as a reaction to your search in that instant.😁
That old telephone announcement feels like listening to a ghost
Right I was thinking, "I wonder what kind a life the woman had and if she is still alive or not?" It's good that it has been preserved.
@@bainsk8 agrre
We probably are
The guy that done the famous 'Mind The Gap' announcement for London Underground in the late 60s is still alive I believe.. in his late 80s/90s now though.
If this recording is from the 1980s I'm sure this lady is still going, it wasn't that far back lol she's hopefully living it up on a cruise somewhere.. although with the current cost of living she's maybe stacking shelves in some Tesco Extra up north to supplement her pension, poor thing.
It made me think of Boards of Canada
Having grown up in the US w/ other telephone sounds: every time I hear that UK phone beep my brain thinks I'm listening to Pink Floyd.
YES, that’s it! My brain was chewing on that in the background and you’re just right. “Is there anybody out there?”
"this is the United States calling, are we reaching... see, he keeps hanging up. And it's a man answering..."
big this
BLERP BLERP!

this channel never ceases to amaze me
Hello there
Look who it is!
:D
“You’re not supposed to do it like that” had a definite photonicinduction energy. Haha!
My two favorite brits in one video. The mad professor electro punk and the OG gentleman.
What a nice ending for the Announcer 9A. Being used as intended on display in a museum and taken very good care of.
oi
WHAT happened to the original tape? I hope it was properly stored & preserved
@@electrictroy2010 Sort of. AFAIR it was very muffled but Techmoan tried to restore the content which only made the hiss much more audible. He made a video about that on his channel: czcams.com/video/3z8z0sbLsrw/video.html
You're doing a very important thing saving this technology.
There is an optical "Speaking Clock" mechanism in the collection that was stored away at the Birmingham Museum of Science and Technology. It is all stored in a warehouse at Newtown, Birmingham since the Birmingham City Council criminally closed the museum around 1998. You might want to see if they would at least let you borrow it. The vast majority of exhibits are stored on shelves in the warehouse and can only be viewed by prior appointment. The closing of the museum was one of the main reasons I moved away from Birmingham, I used to take my kids there every Sunday as my father did with me (he was a telephone engineer btw).
I love the gentle mocking of technique
"You don't do it like that, you do it like this."
this alone.... is why I just subscribed.
23:54 About the speaking clock, in the US, we used large magnetic drums. The tape heads were driven by a mechanical clock mechanism. They were so old, that some of them would originally say 9:05 as "nine five." Locally, one was still in operation into the 2000s.
I recently viewed a video with an alarm clock that works just like that. Very ingenious combination of mechanics and magnetically stored sound.
Techmoan: "Keep me in the loop!"
LMNC: 💡
In New York City one could call “dial-a-joke” in the 1970s, and hear a daily updated joke from a famous comedian. Cost a few cents. They used this rig or something similar.
Same here in the UK. We also had 'Dial A Disc' for listening to a song. As kids we got around paying for the service in public callboxes by tapping out the number on the receiver cradle pins. From memory, it was a short number, like 16 or 116. It was actually quite boring, but we lived in a small town and 'stealing electricity', which would be the technical term for the crime, was about the most exciting thing that happened in town.
Living the dream......
@@horsenuts1831 Great... now I've got to go out and see if the few coin phones we've got left will let you dial that way without paying :-D
I definitely know our exchanges still support pulse dial, so the technique in itself works, the question is how advanced these modern phones are in terms of preventing free calls. The problem is I don't think there are any services with reasonably short numbers left in Austria, the speaking clock was one of the last to be shut down probably ten years ago, the number was 1503. It was neat for testing unknown phones.
The next-best thing I can think of is trying to find a public phone in a rural area that still has some 4-digit numbers, like my parents' weekend getaway.
@@horsenuts1831 wasnt it called abstracting electricity
@@horsenuts1831 I think in the US it's called wire fraud or some such. "Phone phreaking" used to be something hackers would do once they figured out the tones that gave you free long distance dialing. Steve Wozniak said he and Steve Jobs used to do it before they founded Apple; driving around to random pay phones and hacking the phone system. They had homemade tone boxes in the car and Wozniak says they were always afraid they'd get stopped by a cop and charged.
The old 'Dial A Disc'..
I also remember the old trick of tapping out the number to listen for free, but there was also (this took more practice) putting a coin in the slot but holding on to it and pulling it back out at just the right time.
We were all obviously determined juvenile criminals
Ha ha, never expected to see one of his items landing on your workbench and see a follow up.
Great!
Now this is LOOK MUM NO CELLPHONE
Amazing series, loving the insight into why telephone standards are as odd as they are
I'm so happy Techmoan gave you this. Amazing project.
I love how all British youtubers I watch seem to know each other personally.
The movement of that tape is beautiful and hypnotic. Point a camera at it and you could transform it into some kind of wave / modulation data which could then be used to transform the sound.
Saw the Techmoan video...now this!
Brilliant crossover ♥️😀
2 of my fav youtubers teaming up!
:D
Samesies. For some reason old electronics are life-affirming a f
I have no Idea what's going on most of the time, but it's interesting nonetheless.
it's the physical manifestation of what goes on in a small corner of a cpu as it executes 10 lines of codes really slowly!
Some little kid is going to spend an hour playing with this and love every second of it.
I love how you've earned the respect of your peers and have become a bastion of these historic pieces of technology without compromising your character.
I can only imagine the faces if you'd of told all these straight edged business folk back in the day that a bonkers synthpunk techno music artist from the future with a safety pin in his ear was going to build a museum to preserve and commemorate their works in the best way.
Great stuff dude, appreciate you.
I'm continuously awed by your genius and hard work ethic.
That mechanical telephone exchange thing has got to be the most satisfying way to call someone ever. I'd never seen those except in old black-and-white films, really cool that you've got one up and working!
The DIYer's mantra:
"What are ya gonna do?.....
What are ya gonna do?"
I'm positively ecstatic to see you doing a crossover with Techmoan! Two of my favorite youtubers teaming up. Awesome!
This telephone exchange project is definitely in the tops for my favorites, really cool learning about this type technology from back in the day!
I remember watching the old Strowger model when I worked at GEC Plessey Telecommunications in Liverpool. Thanks LMNC for stirring up old dormant memories.
It's the magic of CZcams that I can follow the path of this specific piece of kit.
Just saw this thing on Techmoan the other day. Love it!
I never seen anyone able to explain that NIGHTMARE of wires to the point where I actually understood perfectly and now I'm captivated..... Instantly subscribed. 😁
Your efforts are much appreciated sir. History must be preserved for future generations.
Lovely colaboration with a perfect touch of the "new" recording! This is definitely the quality content! Great work!
Amazing video! I'm impressed by how much you've learned about these machines in just 2 months. And of course, a crossover between you and Techmoan was an unexpected but extremely welcome surprise!
I know almost nothing about the electronics' side of this work but I can tell you I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Excellent work, just excellent!
Always love to see CZcamsrs meeting each other.
Thank you for making education palatable, enjoyable and interesting. Fun even.
The great British retrotech crossover, haha. Love what you did with this, really looking forward to being able to get the money together to come visit your museum once it's safe.
Unless you're a pensioner it's pretty safe.
@@alexanderhanksx I'm immunocompromised and infection rates are still high, it's not safe.
This is amazing. The idea of a single phone call causing mechanical movements in banks of controls, allocated to a single call in remote phone exchanges is mind blowing! Imagine the quantity of these machines needed to handle a whole nation making calls! This is SO antiquated but equally ingenious!
I love that through your videos today's kids can get a taste of what technology used to be like!
i used to rebuild old film prints at an old movie theater right out of high school. i understood a lot of the humor and work you put in. what fun honestly! i already know you had fun with this project without you even having to say it!
Cool collaboration! I watch Techmoan video’s every Saturday, always cool and interresting too see what special audio formats or other weird and wonderfull things he’s got. His video’s also got me back into cassette tapes a format that I grew up with as a kid in the late 80’s / early 90’s.
I see you two being best friends
mat is a nice fellow!
The fact that you two collaborate is unexpected but a perfect fit!
The Phreaker in me really appreciates this video. Very cool!
Name a machine with tape in it: "Mellotron!"
Flippin´ ´eck!
Sam´s a bloody genius! 😁
Loads of memories brought back in this video. When I left school in the mid 70s I got an apprenticeship at GPO Telephones, factories division and between specific training sessions we had to remove all the wires from one of those black tag boards (c200 connection if memory serves). Get it inspected by the trainers to make sure all the solder had been cleared. Then rewire it and again get it inspected for quality of work. If you were too good at the main training you ended up doing this many many times over the course of the first two years LOL. Great vid, thanks. Will have to watch the rest in this strowger series
I have been maintaining a printing plant for 33 years now. I would love to go through my electronic scrap pile with this guy. He could probably find a bunch of treasures in what is now a junk pile.
I want to hear this guy say "She blinded ME, with science!"
This is unexpected and awesome! Great work too!
You know, making a huge tape loop mesmerisingly snaking around like that would look awesome under a large glass table! Idea!
I miss the line feedback of the old electromechanical exchanges! Thanks for a great video and demonstrating your rather nifty skills! Awesome stuff!
oooohhh!!! the hilarious joy joy joy of techmoan being put to an announcement loop! fantastic! I laughed out loud and clapped ty!
I hope this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship with Techmoan and many more collabs to come
Wow, what a retirement for the machine. And you thought horses put out to stud were lucky.
I love both of these channels! Awesome idea for a collab :)
"Taffles" - that's a new word for me! Fantastic video, I love watching that tape loop snake around in the transparent compartment.
Such a rare channel. Not looked in for few months, got some stuff to watch..guys got a bloody working exchange..As always Sam, su effn purb. Can't wait till your museum is open. Donating to your projects. Be lucky u mad genius✌️
When the inevitable demise of society is apparent, we'll need this man!
Nick, I was thinking the exact same thing. You definitely want this guy on your team when it all goes to crap, which BTW is an inevitability.
Now i have seen all my favorite niche yt channels crossed over, with the exception of Njango Star... 😉
I LUV U SAM! Watching your projects make me really really happy! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
God this gives me so many great ideas for sci-fi concepts. The whole relay-clackity dynamic with neat braids and the like gives so much aesthetic. Feels chunky yet refined - like a well engineered hammer that always gets the nail in the first hit.
As I said on his channel, you could invite his Muppets to chat and sing with your Furbies🤗😁
I love the contrast here. You've got techmoan's clean, almost sterile environments compared to lmnc's guts-strewn chop shop.
anyone else have a little tinge of joy thinking about Techmaon and LMNC meeting up? I think they should do a podcast together or something!
First Colin Furze uses your composition on his channel, now you Collab with Techmoan! All my fave CZcams Brits coming together! Awesomeness.
Could you set it up so that the announcement plays whenever you call a number that is not in the system?
You basically would just have to short all of the pins on each line together, and they likely made a jumper block just for that purpose.
18:23 You're starting to sound a bit like Photonic Induction
YES this is the crossover event I didn't know I needed. two different generations of obscure audio knowledge getting down!
All this electronic mechanical technology is so fascinating. Its a shame that there won't be a technological era like it again. Your museum is amazing and I'll be sure to make a visit if and when I can
bro you need to get a pc fitted with a hardware interface card running linux and asterisk voip software running on it. then you can connect it to c-net and then people from around the world can rind your exchange and even phone other exchanges people have from yours and visa versa.
Yeah that second announcer is definitely a dodgy individual LOL
I always love how you say you dont know much about electronics and then i see this
When I was a kid, I used to love crossovers in TV shows, like when Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote helped Thomas Magnum. Well, Sam from LMNC Meeting Mat from Techmoan is one of those! When worlds collide...!
Furst
Congratulations for being the first to support the algorithm. 🥇
@@awatt lol
Hell yes! You were certainly the person to tackle this.
I remember these, in some rural exchanges this was piped in on tie lines and the incoming callers to the service all shared the same transmission circuit. It was possible to shout and talk to each other over the music. We used "16" for the service to be called on. Yes you are correct, weather, cricket, football all used the same machines. Great stuff.
Techmoan really does sound like someone you would hear coming through such a machine. Thanks for recommending this one, algorithm. It's a great little follow up that introduced me to a new channel.
You are totally correct in this context that if it works it works. But I have to admit those words sent a shiver down my spine because they reminded me of past coworkers. It will work long enough for them to walk away and have it become my problem lol. But in your case this is all on you, keep up the good work ya madman!
You've gotten so good at explaining stuff dude. Either that or I'm thick as shiv and I'm finally learning high end electronics. Love it.
This is the first video I watched on this channel and I loved every bit of it.
I love cross channel content like this AND playing the six degrees of separation between all my favorite CZcams content creators!
I love when two youtubers I already watch collaborate.
As an interactive voice response services sound editor, I'm so happy I have a different setup to do my job :-D
Lovely video!
Amazing, watched this on Techmoan first and then just seen it taken to a new level. These two need to tie up more!
"What a plonker" :D hadn't heard that one in a while...
Nice job with the announcer!
Those selector resets are very satisfying.
This is amazing! I don't know what's cooler, the tape machine, or the telephone switches clicking into action.
Two of my favourites! What a fantastic crossover!
What a fantastic video! So great to see a collab between Techmoan and Look Mum. Love it!
