- Nastiest thing I have ever done or ever eaten lol but a Blast to catch .with MY BARE HANDS! Monster Mike Fishing challenged me to make this video! Grabbed that thing with gloves after getting stabbed a few times before. DIsgusting lol I hope I never get lost in the swamp!

Actually, I ate lots of plecos while living in the jungle in the Amazon for several months, and they were the tastiest fish I've ever eaten in my life, period. First of all, I don't know what you think you were doing with that machete, but that is not the way you clean or cook any fish known to man. Second, for this particular fish, if you have a cooking fire, you slow cook them right inside their "armor," just like baking an aluminum-foil wrapped potato. Nature has given you a chunk of meat inside its own croc pot, and you should take advantage. You can even cook them directly on the coals if you want. During the cooking process, the armor separates from the meat. By the time you take them off the fire (a bit charred on the outside if they were cooked right on the coals) you can peel the armor off and dig into a slow-cooked, very mild-tasting fish. Highly recommend.

there's a certain way to do it. you gotta bleed it, you gotta filet it carefully not getting the stomach contents on the meat, and you gotta wash it and milk bath it.
after that those little chunks of meat, you can bread em and deep fry them and it's a lot like catfish nuggets.
so many things wrong with the way you hacked at it with the machete. likely you fouled the meat with the stomach and intestines. for sure I could see the greenish fluid on the cooler with the blood.
take the head off from the pectoral fins then gut it completely. rinse it out pretty good then split it down the dorsal. and strip the meat chunks from the sides. milk will soften the flavor but not necessary.
you can skewer the meat chunks and cook like that but the skin on an open fire puts a funky taste also.

I'd like to see someone do a cook with the suckerfish who actually knows what the hell they are doing.
As a fish hobbyist pleco's are one of my favourite fish. You should try and put one in ya ponds as they will help keep them clean. And anything you cook in a flame like you did with this pleco is going to taste like crap! Nice over acting after you tasted it! Next time I advise you do some research on best ways to cook.

yeah it not falling off the bone because it's the way you prepared the fish the way you cooked it is very lazy and ammature shouod have rinsed it then used a sharp fillet knife and cooked it over the fire from a distance or used some foil to wouod have made the meat alot more better guess some ppl just cant cook and expect the meat to not look and taste like shit???

I've never had it before, but people recommend you gut it through the underside, and then you cook it inside its armored casing. Then, crack it open by twisting the tail, like you would a lobster.
Just in case you were thinking of trying it again. I heard pleco are a huge nuisance fish in Florida. I'd also not recommend cooking it like that - use a grill or something. I'm not sure anything would taste good cooked over that starter brick. Also, I may have never cleaned a fish before in my life, but I'm fairly certain that that was not the right way to clean a fish... ever.
Also, Pleco are not just algae eaters. In fact, the common pleco that you caught eat lots of things. They're omnivorous. Yes, they are a bottom feeder species, but so are pretty much all catfish, including the river catfish that people tend to like eating all the time.

I caught one when i was a teenager, and gutted it, and pulled out the belly skin, washed it out, and cooked it like a lobster tail, with butter and spices inside the shell, it actually tasted pretty good that way, it has a harder texture than other fish

Plecos actually have no predators there. Probably simply because most can’t get through the armor. Having no predators is a large part of why they are so invasive

Plecostomus are actually native to South America. They were introduced here in North America in the early 1980's as an aquarium fish. Sadly, many of them outgrew their tanks, and the owners would release them into lakes and streams, hence they became an alien species. As you can imagine, in the deep south, the water is warm enough most of the year for the plecostomus to thrive, you get the males and females together, and the rest as they say, is history. So now fishermen can now catch a fish that most North Americans would just keep as a pet on a hook and line. I have had several of them in my life, so naturally I would be curious as to how they taste, though I never had one quite that big, or the balls to try one. I live in the Pacific Northwest where such fish would not likely survive in our waters for very long, and a pleco that size in a pet store would cost about 75-100 US dollars, so that would make for an expensive meal that would most likely not be enjoyable. BTW, in South America, they eat pretty much anything that moves, and Plecostomus are no exception.

Found this video cus I just read an NPR article where in mexico the fish is a problem and they are trying counter the problem by selling it as food. There's apparently a way to filet it nicely and "the flavor is similar to other mild freshwater fish".

Watched this from my retirement home base in the Philippines. This fish is known as the "janitor fish" here and in several other countries. Janitor fish can survive in very nasty water. Filipinos in my area that I have spoken with, tell me "we don't eat this fish." I would agree as we have no clean water to fish, only canals that contain many nasty things. On balance, my Beautiful Bride's Uncle has the opposite opinion, saying this fish is great if you know how to cook it. If ever I snag one where the lake or river is clean, sure, I will give it a try. I have eaten part of a large lizard and a python cooked in coconut milk with a few hot peppers and enjoyed it. Why not give this fish a taste?
If im in a plane wrecked and all there is to eat is the pleco. i would eat my right arm and leave my left arm for something else haha
